Chapter 1

A/N: This is my first try at a FAKE fanfic. Flames will largely be ignored, but constructive criticism is welcomed with open arms. And of course, the characters aren\'t mine, I just like to play with them. No profit is being made from this work of fiction.

Chapter One

Ryo’s dark eyes swept upward to regard his partner over the rim of his glasses. Thanks to another reckless stunt pulled by Dee they were stuck in the office and surrounded by piles of paperwork.

For once, Dee was actually doing the work, his dark head bent and the tip of his pen tapping slowly against his lower lip. Ryo’s eyes lingered there for a moment before he dragged them to to the papers in front of him.

He was concentrating so hard on his work that he didn’t see the smirk that curled Dee’s lips or the burning emerald stare directed his way.

Ryo sighed as he closed the door softly after saying goodnight to Dee. By the time they’d finished their paperwork it had been rather late. Out of what seemed like a twisted sense of chivalry Dee had insisted on walking with Ryo to his place before taking a cab to his own apartment. He’d come up at Ryo’s invitation, to have a drink before he went home for the night.

Bikky was home, which had kept Dee’s typical lewd advances to a minimum. Dee had cornered him in the kitchen once, but to Ryo’s surprise he hadn’t attacked with his usual force.

Instead, he’d placed his fingertips gently on Ryo’s cheek and leaned forward to brush his lips lightly across Ryo’s.

“Can I...?” he murmured softly, his breath a teasing caress over Ryo’s skin.

A faint nod was all the answer Ryo could manage in the face of the intensity in the depths of Dee’s eyes. He was almost relieved when Dee’s eyes closed as his lips pressed fully against Ryo’s. Warmth blossomed along Ryo’s body where they touched, and he found his lips parting eagerly to accept the slow, wet stroke of Dee’s tongue against his. Dee’s fingers tangled in the hair at Ryo’s nape, sending a tingle down his spine.

He’d steppeck tck then, leaving Ryo flushed and wanting more. His hand slid slowly down the length of Ryo’s arm, fingers tangling briefly before he broke the contact between them. Ryo couldn’t tear his eyes away from Dee’s mouth, wanting to trace the smile that drew it into a curve with his tongue.

“It’s late,” Dee had said then, his voice low and somehow satisfied. “I should go.”

Shocked that Dee hadn’t at least attempted to stay the night, again Ryo had found himself only being able to nod in response. Now, standing with his forehead against the cool surface of the closed door, he lifted his fingertips to his lips and wondered at the sudden change in his partner.

Dee let the smirk that he’d fought to keep off his face take over as he stepped into the elevator. If the look on Ryo’s face was any indication, Dee was sure that kiss would be on his partner’s mind for the rest of the night.

Thank you Diana, he thought with a soft chuckle as the elevator reached the ground floor and he stepped off.

A few days earlier the busty bombshell had caught him moping after being shot down by Ryo yet again. She’d shaken her head and perched on the corner of his desk, eyeing him with a tiny smile.

“What?” he’d growled sourly, feeling his cheeks heat at the knowing amusement in her expression.

“Tell me something,” she said slowly. “If Ryo were a woman, would you be so aggressive?”

Surprised, he blinked up at her, chewing his lower lip thoughtfully before he spoke. “Well, no, I suppose not,” he said after a minute, “but he isn’t.”

“Thank goodness,” she laughed, “the world could use more men like him. All I’m trying to say is that Ryo might respond better to a little more sensitivity from you. You might need to woo him, just like you would a woman.”

With that, she hopped off his desk, patted his shoulder and sauntered out of the office, humming to herself. He stared after her, brow furrowed. Treat Ryo like a woman? Just how the hell was he supposed to do that?

It had taken a bit of thought, but he’d finally realized that Diana was probably right. Though Ryo certainly wasn’t a woman (and Dee had leered at the thought), he also had never been in a relationship with a man before, so he was skittish and nervous and unsure of what to do.

If what it took to get Ryo to relax and give in to his feelings was a bit more romance, well then, Dee was sure he could play at romance with the best of them.

Ryo winced as the clear glass mug hit the floor and shattered in an explosion of glass fragments and a spreading puddle of dark brown coffee. He stepped back quickly to avoid soaking his shoes and reached for a roll of paper towels.

He knelt to clean up the mess, frowning as he used the paper towels to soak up the coffee and sweep the broken glass into a smile pile. He’d been off balance all morning, fumbling through his ing ing routine so badly that even Bikky had noticed. Before he left for school the boy had given Ryo a hug, his expression concerned.

“You really need to start locking your door, man,” Dee’s voice made Ryo jump and he twisted his head around to look at his partner as he continued to clean up his mess.

“Why? You’d just pick the lock,” Ryo replied, the corners of his eyes crinkling at the abashed grin that painted Dee’s face at his words. Suddenly, Ryo let out a pained hiss as a shard of glass embedded into the palm of his hand.

“Careful,” Dee’s voice lost it’s teasing tone as he crossed to Ryo’s side and caught up his injured hand.

Following the urging of Dee’s gentle tug on his wrist, Ryo rose and let Dee lead him to the sink. He turned on the water and carefully rinsed away the crimson pool that had welled up around the glass shard. Ryo winced at the sting of the water against his cut and Dee’s grip on his wrist tightened sympathetically.

Dee reached in and pulled the chunk of glass free, handing Ryo a wadded up paper towel to stem the fresh flow of blood.

“It doesn’t look too deep. Let me go get something to bandage it with.” He disappeared through the kitchen doorway in the direction of the bathroom.

Ryo held the towel tightly against the stinging throb in his palm. He was grateful for Dee’s timely arrival. While the cut wasn’t serious, it would have been difficult to bandage on his own. He glared down at his hand, realizing that it was going to be rather difficult to write at work as well.

Dee came back to the kitchen carrying a small plastic basket of medical supplies. He set to work quickly, taking charge with a deftness that faintly surprised Ryo. He hadn’t pegged Dee as a guy who would be able to care for a wound with such a gentle touch.

Almost immediately Ryo repented the uncharitable nature of his thought. He remembered how Dee had cared for him the last time he was sick and began to wonder if there was a chance he hadn’t looked deeply enough into Dee’s character. Perhaps he’d focused too much on the brash exterior that Dee projected and not enough on the person within.

Ryo suddenly realized that Dee had finished wrapping gauze around his hand, but that he hadn’t let go. Before Ryo could pull his hand away, Dee lifted it and brushed a quick, soft kiss across the top of the bandage. Stunned, and a little touched at the tenderness of the gesture, Ryo simply stared as Dee let go of his hand.

“Go get your coat,” Dee broke the silence with a quick grin and a gesture to encompass the mess still on the floor. “I’ll take care of this.”

Dee’s eyes followed Ryo as the man left the room. As soon as he’d slipped through the doorway Dee’s grin turned to a smirk. He’d caught the pleased surprised that had flitted across Ryo’s face, and felt rather like the cat that ate the canary over the fact that he’d put it there. He swept up the stained paper towels and glass shards, dropping them into the wastebasket. As he headed out of the kitchen to join his partner, he couldn’t help but begin to whistle, thinking it was going to be an excellent day.
