Disclaimer:
I do not own VanDread, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Falling Ill
I have no ownership of any anime to my knowledge, Vandread being among that list, so I would be a fool to try to make any money off of this little side fiction.
Please don't try to sue me over it, I have children to feed.
This is an attempt to follow the anime and insert a relationship behind the scenes.
It may or may not slip up here and there, but if anyone catches a mistake I will try to repair it. Thank you in advance.
The first two chapters fall around the end of Episode 2.
1 - Falling Ill
Hibiki rose from his pallet in the holding cell and stood on shaky legs. The sound that roused him was loud and demanding and he quickly pulled on boots and his vest. Bart groaned from his place by the wall and Duero was already gone from the larger pallet nearer to his.
He was ready when Dita arrived to pull him out and drag him to the Bangata and pushed him inside calling after him as she headed for her own Dread.
“Merge with me Alien-san, Merge with me.”
Hibiki scowled as he closed the hatch. As if he wanted such a thing.
He hated merging with the woman. It was against all he had been raised to be.
He fought hard; accomplishing his task of cutting through the enemy and reaching the larger ship to disable its bay.
As he landed the Bangata in its place on the platform, his head throbbed and his eyes burned. And by the time he reached the cell and dropped back onto his pallet he realized he had gotten sick somewhere along the way.
Hibiki crawled under the light cover and curled up, shivering fiercely as his body tried to cool itself in the sweltering room.
Dita hurried through the ship and past the other women that called out to her as she went along.
“Dita! What are you doing?” Meia called out bringing her to a halt.
“Oh, Leader. I was going to see where Alien-san went. He was fighting differently and I wanted to ask him about it.” She explained.
“I see. I will go with you. Gascogne said he was returning to his cell” and the two women turned in that direction.
At the door to the cell, Meia called to the man. “Hibiki-san, wake up. We need to talk with you. Hibiki-san?” she called getting no response.
Meia stepped into the cell. Dita stood back when Meia waved at her forcefully.
“Dita. Go get the doctor. This man is sick.” Meia said pointing to the exit door and sending her off.
Meia wrapped Hibiki in another blanket and used a corner to dab the perspiration off of his forehead and cheeks.
Duero followed the girl to the cell and looked down at the boy in irritation.
The loud-mouthed easily angered third-class citizen had managed to succumb to an illness and now the doctor would be forced to deal with him.
The man lifted the smaller one into his arms and wrapped the scant cover over his shivering body. He could feel the heat radiating off of the fevered skin and his professionalism overcame his personal feelings.
He carried this burden to the waiting exam area and began to treat the sick young man to the best of his abilities.
Soon, Hibiki was sleeping more restfully and the older man was staring at him in concern.
