Chapter One

"Be careful, please?" Gunther pleaded watching his lover and fiancé dress in his riding uniform. Gwendel turned and smiled slightly.

"It's just a routine patrol, Gunther. Don't get so upset. I'll be gone a month at the most." Gunther frowned and nodded sitting upon their bed and looking at his hands.

"I know but...so soon after what happened...? I mean Yuri wouldn't be upset if you didn't go! I know he wouldn't. We're both still recovering from our wounds, it wouldn't be too unexpected for us both to take a break from our duties..." Gunther smiled lovingly trying his best to keep his lover home with him. Gwendel walked over and gave him a kiss on the lips.

"I can't do that, Gunther. I have a job to do. Besides, I'm already with you no matter where I go. We do share a bit of each other's soul." Gunther managed to nod but still look like a pouting child.

"I need more than just your soul with me." The wind mage smiled in a way that made Gwendel think that his love life with the man was only just beginning to scratch the surface.

"Well then my going off on a short journey will only make the heart grow fonder. And when I get back, I'm all yours." Gwendel leaned close, putting his hands on either side of Gunther's hips. Gunther smiled and quickly wrapped his arms around Gwendel's neck and pulled him down for a kiss, leaning back into the bed. Gwendel gasped slightly but eagerly laid himself down over his lover kissing him.

"What if I want you all now?" he asked his eyes half lidded hoping to convince Gwendel to stay. Gwendel shook his head and kissed him again gently before standing up.

"Gunther, I really have to be going. I have a duty to His Majesty, as well as to the kingdom to protect the borders. You'll just have to be patient." Gunther sighed and kissed Gwendel again before smiling.

"Very well. Good to know you don't get distracted so easily." Gunther stood up and wrapped his arms around his fiancé and hugged him. "I'll be waiting for you, Gwendel Von Walde." Gwendel smiled and kissed the shorter demon returning the hug.

"I won't keep you waiting long." Gwendel smiled and released the man he loved before going over and putting on his sword belt on and pulling on a jacket. Gunther watched as Gwendel finished his preparations and headed out with a loving smile. Gunther smiled back and sat back down on their bed with a heavy sigh. He hated waiting for the people he loved and cared about to come back. Pouting slightly and reaching for a fox plushy that Gwendel had made, he stared at the door, already missing his lover's presence.

Gwendel walked down to the stables where his guard was waiting to go on patrol with their commander. Nodding to them, Gwendel walked to his horse and patted it's neck affectionately before mounting up. Dorcas and the other stable hands had already prepared their horses for them. Watching over his shoulder as the rest of his troop mounted up and trotted their horses next to their commander’s. Looking up and into the window of his and Gunther’s room, he smiled waving at the form that stood in the window. He saw Gunther return the wave, and he could just make out a plushy held in his arms. Gwendel smiled and turned his horse towards the exit and trotted away.

“Conrad, look after everything while I’m gone. Make sure Gunther doesn’t worry himself to death over me, all right?” He said as he met his brother at the gate of the castle. Conrad smiled and nodded.

“Of course. Just come home safely and quickly.” Gwendel nodded before spurring his horse on through the gates of the castle and down the road of the city. The troop behind him followed, their horses well prepared for the long journey of patrolling the boarders. As the band passed through the gates into the city, they were waved at by many of the appreciative humans living there. Returning the wave, but knowing in his heart how some of them were leery of seeing the demon general who had only a few months before summoned dragons to destroy their home, Gwendel spurred his horse on quicker to pass through the city.

They exited the city and Gwendel turned off towards the western borders passing towns and small villages. A brook babbled along nearby, and children played. Gwendel would protect his country and all who lived in side of it.

It was evening of the third day out of Shin Makoku when the small group of demons found a young man sitting along side the road. He was covered in blood, obviously not his own, and wrapped in a dark blue cloak. Gwendel slowed his stallion and dismounted, going over to the young human.

“Are you all right…?” he asked kneeling in front of him. The boy looked up, and Gwendel met his bright green blue eyes. He couldn’t have been more than twenty-eight, in Gwendel’s mind.

“M-my family…” the young man said his voice very rough. Gwendel put a gentle hand upon his shoulders.

“What happened to your family?” By now, the other men came around and were keeping a weather eye out for bandits. The human began to shake and held out a small box towards Gwendel.

“You killed them…” in a flash the traveler got up and opened the box, kicking Gwendel back. Gwendel winched, landing hard upon his still healing side and reached for his sword. He looked around and saw that all of his men were frozen in battle with creatures made of strange properties. Looking up at the now uncovered man, Gwendel got up and went to charge, only to find him-self encased inside an invisible box. Getting a good look at the young human, he recognized where he had seen those eyes before. Twenty years prior, in the war that took Julia Von Wilcotts’s life, and changed his brother, Gwendel had been ordered to force a small band of humans back into their village. It ended up being a slaughter due to his Uncle’s foolish ideas of how war should be conducted. In the village that was burned down by overzealous warriors that Gwendel could not contain, he remembered seeing a family burned alive screaming at the demons to stop and save them. The fire being too hot for Gwendel to even get close enough to save them, he watched in horror, as the family was burned alive. He remembered seeing the family trait of bright green blue eyes that burned into his own cobalt blue ones. The eyes of the young man he was staring at now were the same.

“Don’t worry, I don’t want to kill your dear little party, no I’m not that cruel. Not like you, Gwendel von Walde.” The young man stood closer and smiled darkly. “I’m sure you remember my family don’t you? You burned them alive, you and your demon warriors. Then watched as they screamed for help not lifting a finger to even so much as bless them. I was lucky that day that I was out in the woods; I wasn’t found, thank God. I watched you burn them, I swore I would find you and give you just as much torment as you gave my own parents and little sister!”

“You don’t understand…that wasn’t my doing. If I could have I would have saved your family! I’m not a water mage! The fire was too hot, I could barely even get close enough to smother the fire in earth!” The human glared at him.

“Shut up, I don’t want your excuses. I want you to suffer, like my family did, and how I did living for twenty years off of the kindness of other humans. I was hoping that that dragon soul in side of you would have devoured you whole those few months back. But oh well, now I get to watch you suffer personally.” The man took out a wicked dagger from the wooden box. Gwendel found himself unable to move as he was slashed across the side. His body reacted as a strange poison began to run through his veins. His soul began to retreat, and he collapsed to his side. As consciousness began to fade away, he could hear the boy mutter in a strange language, and open the box. He caught a sight of the human just before a flash of light blinded the demon general, and sent him on his way to stasis.
