Ch #1 - The Feelings Begin
A story requested by PhoenixHelix.
There were just some days Kyon felt like some kind of magnet for freaks. In the little club he joined there seemed to be an overly flamboyant Esper, a clumsily cute time traveler, an out of touch lifeless alien, and their fearless leader, a girl with the ambitions and social skills of Genghis Khan. He was the only normal one of the bunch, or at least, he hoped he was normal. With all of the unbelievable situations he kept finding himself in, Kyon couldn't help but think that he was some kind of jinx.
When Haruhi declared they were going to start recruiting new members in to the SOS brigade, Kyon felt that it was a double edged sword. He felt that if Haruhi had more minions to boss around, she could wreak more havoc on the school. But a few new members meant Kyon might actually get to spend some time with some normal people. Not everyone at this school was crazy, right?
When no one responded to their notice about joining their club, Haruhi started getting furious. Kyon had tried to explain to her that nobody was going to switch clubs in the middle of the school year, but she wouldn't listen to reason. Her next declaration was that each of them was to bring in one candidate who was worthy to be in her club, or heads would roll. Kyon sighed under his, hoping he wouldn't be the one with his head on the chopping block.
It took him a few day and some open ended promises, but he finally convinced his friend Taniguchi to drop for Haruhi's audition. Kyon knew Haruhi wouldn't approve, but he figured as long as it looked like he tried he might get to keep his head.
"Next!" Haruhi shouted, kicking Itsuki's even more flamboyant friend out and waiting impatiently for Kyon to enter.
"Hi, Kyon said you're looking for some new people." Taniguchi said looking embarrassed. "I'm Taniguchi."
"Hmm... not much to look at." Haruhi said bluntly, looking him up and down. "Do you have any special powers?"
"Powers?" Taniguchi muttered, giving Kyon a baffled look.
Kyon just shrugged his shoulders, leaving his friend to face the lion alone.
Waiting outside the clubroom was Yuki sitting next to a girl who was also buried nose deep in a boring looking book and Mikuru talking with a familiar looking green haired girl.
"Tsuruya!" She said happily, holding out her hand. "We played baseball together remember."
Kyon couldn't help but notice how strange her introduction was. "Yeah..."
"You guys were just so weird last time. And when Mikuru said she needed someone to come to the club with her, I couldn't refuse. Just look at this face." She grabbed Mikuru's jaw and pointed the startled girl face towards Kyon.
Mikuru was on the verge of tears but all Kyon could do was give her a weak smile while Tsuruya continued to tease her. Kyon sighed again as he watched the all to familiar scene of Mikuru getting fondled against her will. The last thing this club needed was another Haruhi. At least this new one was pretty.
As he had feared, Tsuruya had made it through Haruhi's vetting process. And to make matters worse, he was being punished for his candidate failing. He wasn't sure exactly why Taniguchi had failed, since he wouldn't speak to him anymore, but he was sure it couldn't be helped. Plus, Kyon didn't understand why he was the only one being punished when neither Yuki or Itsuki had produced anyone better than he had.
To his delight, his punishment turned out to be nothing more than his usual minion duties. He had to drop off some packages at the post office, buy a few supplies and clean up the club room. As he slipped his shoes on to leave the school, he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"Kyon. I'm coming with you." Tsuruya said in a overly excited tone.
"Are you sure?" Kyon asked, hoping he could talk her out of it. "It's just a few boring errands, I think I can handle it."
"No, Haruhi said I had to, like some kind of initiation on my part, and protection on yours." She kicked her shoes on. "Haruhi is kind of weird, isn't she."
Well, at least they agreed on something. They walked in awkward silence for a while, the whole time Kyon wishing it could have been Mikuru by his side instead of this girl. It wasn't that she wasn't as good looking as Mikuru, but even in their silence, he could tell there was something off about this girl.
"So what do you guys do in this club anyways?" Tsuruya asked, finally breaking the painful silence.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Kyon sighed.
"Mikuru says, one minute you’re out looking for aliens, the next you're playing taking on the baseball team." She said, laughing a little.
Kyon joined in with a weak hearted chuckle. "Well, we pretty much end up doing whatever Haruhi feels like doing at the time. Her whims change like the wind."
"And what do you get out of it?" She asked, cutting right to the heart of the matter.
"I don't know..." Kyon muttered, wondering why in the hell he ever put up with Haruhi's shenanigans. "I guess I don't have anything better to be doing."
"You're weird." She grinned, flashing him her fang toothed smile.
Kyon couldn't believe it. She was right. No normal person would put up with Haruhi as long as he had, the only explanation must be that he wasn't a normal person. He let out another tired sigh, wishing he had just stayed in bed this morning. They walked in silence the rest of the way to the post office. When they got there, Kyon sighed even harder when he saw how long the line was. As he waited and waited, the monotony reinforced the idea in his mind that he was nothing more than Haruhi's nameless minion.
"Hey, did you know it would be faster to deliver a package on foot than it would by mailing it, as long as it was under 75 kilometers. I saw a game show once where they had a runner deliver mail like that." Tsuruya whispered, as if not to let anyone else in on her little secret.
She really was like another Haruhi, Kyon thought as he hid a sigh behind a yawn. "Yeah, it might be faster for the letter, but not for the person delivering it. A few more minutes and my part will be over with."
"I wasn't suggesting that we try it." She rolled her eyes. "I was just trying to keep myself from dying of boredom and being in a place like this made me think of that story."
Kyon's face turned a slight shade of pink. Maybe he had spent too much time with the real Haruhi because he had forgotten what normal conversations were like. Tsuruya wasn't weird, she was just a normal high school girl with maybe just a tad too much energy. Kyon smiled, realizing that he was out doing normal things with a normal girl. Well... a cute, normal girl.
The rest of the day went by without a hitch. Kyon felt funny saying good bye to Tsuruya, not really knowing what to say, but feeling like he should say something. That night, he couldn't tell what was bugging him so badly. He just kept tossing and turning, telling himself that she wasn't anything like Haruhi.
"Alright new members, listen up." Haruhi said aloud, not realizing that Tsuruya was the only new person there. "I'm the head of this club and the rest of the lay out goes like this. Mikuru is our club's trophy and everyone else are my subordinates. As long as you give one hundred and ten... no, one hundred and fifteen percent, you'll do fine."
Kyon could literally see Tsuruya's mind asking what she would be giving those percents too, but before she could ask, Haruhi shoved a maid's costume in her arms. "Since you're Mikuru's friend, you'll be her apprentice."
"Oh Mikuru. You never told me you get to wear costumes like this." Tsuruya laughed, missing the worried look on Mikuru's face.
They kicked Kyon out of the room and when he returned, he was greeted by two lovely maids serving him the tea he had bought the day before. Tsuruya looked great in her costume. Her long green hair flowed like elegant curtains. Her breasts, although dwarfed by Mikuru's, still pressed up nicely against the tight fabric of her maid outfit, giving Kyon clear view of their soft shape. She had on a playful grin, which gave Kyon the impression that she loved being the center of attention like this, like Haruhi. Kyon mentally shook his head, telling himself over and over that she was nothing like Haruhi.
She poured Kyon a enthusiastic cup of tea, spilling quite a bit of it down Kyon's shirt, making him yelp up in pain. She grabbed a rag and started drying him off. But instead of apologizing, she just turned to Mikuru and asked, "Mikuru, how do you make it look so easy?"
Mikuru was too embarrassed to answer out loud, she just kind of mumbled something along the lines of, "It was nothing."
As Tsuruya patted Kyon's chest, he couldn't help but notice she wasn't really looking at where the spill was, she was just going the motions. A few moments later she left him, and started pouring tea for the rest of the club. With his shirt still wet, Kyon wondered what it was about that girl. She wasn't weird like the rest of them, but something was still kind of off about her. When she got to Haruhi's desk, she leaned over while she poured her tea, giving Kyon a nice outline of her hips straining against the confines of her clothes. He could see the dimples on her lower back through the tight fabric, and he felt a rush of excitement flowing through him. Was he really that attracted to her so suddenly?
When they were done pouring tea, Tsuruya and Mikuru went over to their own little corner and started talking about whatever it was girls talked about. From the direction his chair was facing, Kyon couldn't see them, but he kept finding excesses to turn and take a look. He didn't know why he felt the sudden urge to want to stare at her, but something just kept telling him he had to. He spent that night he tossing and turning again, wondering what it was about that girl that made him loose so much sleep.
The next day, Kyon entered the club room to find four bunny girl outfit clad girls waiting for him. They all had on fishnet stockings and black high heels, but their suits were all unique. Haruhi was in her normal black suit and ears, Mikuru in her red. Somehow they had convinced Yuki to put on a white one, but from the familiar sight of her face down in a book, Kyon didn't think they'd get her to do much else. The strangest of all however had to be Tsuruya standing there in her bright yellow suit with matching ears. The color clashed horribly with her long green hair and her breasts barely filled up the front, but somehow Kyon couldn't take his eyes off of her.
"Since our last plan to get more members failed..." Haruhi gave Kyon a stern look, and completely missing the fact that a new member was standing right next to her. "We're going to go out and make people want to join. Kyon, grab that camera, you're taking pictures."
Kyon sighed, thinking to himself that Haruhi didn't even know how the word 'please' was pronounced. But as much as he hated indulging Haruhi's every whim without question, this would give him an excuses to stare at scantily clad woman all day long. He snatched up the camera that was laying on the table and followed Haruhi out in to the unsuspecting world.
As they marched around town, posing for pictures as they went, Kyon couldn't help but think this is the exact kind of havoc he thought would come from new members. Everyone and their mothers came out of their homes and shops to stare at the group of high school girls wearing little more than underwear. He wasn't sure if what they were doing was against the law or not, he was just glad they hadn't bumped in to any police men along the way.
"Here here." Haruhi commanded, pushing one half naked girl up against another.
The focus of Haruhi's mind seemed to be putting Mikuru in as many suggestive poses as she could, but the focus of Kyon's lenses was on Tsuruya. He loved the way her hair bounced when she walked, or the way if flowed around her when she turned. He loved the way her suit hugged her hips, cute at an angle that showed skin not normally seen in everyday life. He loved the way she smiled, grinning at the fact that her pictures would be used to entice the hearts of potential members. As he took shot after shot of Tsuruya's body he could feel his heart racing faster and faster, his mind spinning more and more.
As a precaution, Kyon forced himself to start taking pictures of the other girls as well, but when the camera wasn't pointed at Tsuruya, his eyes still were. The hours seemed to fly by and before he knew it, dark was starting to set. Kyon could have spent the rest of his life staring at Tsuruya through that camera. When they were back in the club room, Kyon set the camera down and drank down a large cup of cold tea. He had been so focused on taking pictures he had forgotten his normal bodily needs. He slipped away to the bathroom and when he returned he found that the girls had all changed back in to their normal clothes.
"Alright, I'll get these developed and bring in the good ones tomorrow." Tsuruya said, holding the camera. "I'm so glad I joined this club, you guys have such crazy fun."
"Hey..." Kyon said hurriedly. "Why don't you let me get those developed for you, save you the trouble."
"No, I've got it." Tsuruya smiled, turning to talk to Mikuru.
Kyon made his way between them. "But you've got to be tired out everything you did today. And I pass by a camera shop on my way home, I can just drop it off with no trouble."
"But it's my camera." She replied, kind of shaking her head in confusion.
"But I took the pictures." He pleaded.
She just stared at him, puzzled. "Look I've got it, okay?"
That was it, he was done for. "Okay." He said with a flat smile.
That night, he was too stressed out to even toss and turn.
The next day seemed to drag on forever. His plan was to slip away after school ended and avoid the club room as long as he could, but Haruhi caught him on his way out and forced him to carry something for her to the club room. When he got there, he kept his eyes pointed at the ground in a child like hope that if he couldn’t see Tsuruya, she couldn’t see him. He knew it was stupid, but it was all he could do to keep from running away. Even though he couldn’t see them, he could feel her eyes burning holes through his body.
“So, how’d the pictures come out?” Haruhi asked once everyone had settled down. “Let’s see the definition of amateur photographer.”
There was a hesitation in Tsuruya’s answer. “Well… amateur is right. The lens cap was on for most of the pictures. Here’s the ones with actual pictures to look at.”
Kyon didn’t even remember a lens cap, but he thanked the camera gods never the less. The rest of the day seemed to go by with a blur. Even Haruhi’s taunts about lens caps didn’t faze him. When club finally ran out, Kyon walked to the shoe lockers feeling like he had somehow dodged a bullet. But again, he felt a tap on his shoulder.
“There was no lens cap Kyon…” Tsuruya’s voice whispered softly in his ear.
