I actually managed a full disclaimer this time...OMGWTFBBQ?

You might notice that Umi uses an attack with Kai\'s name in it in this chapter. No, he wasn\'t being stuck-up when he taught her the move - as you probably know, \'Kai\' translates into \'ocean\' (Unless it\'s actually \'Kair\' and I\'m just confused).

Can you stop the fire?
Can you stand to fight her?
You can\'t stop the fire.
You won\'t say the words.

Chapter 9: Heir

Outside was chaos. No animals or human beings could be seen outdoors, and most of the plants had wilted or died. And in the midst of this chaos was a steel battleship, with a red symbol that was not in any language used on Earth, as far as Umi knew.

Umi, Rannock, and Kai were standing on a huge chunk of rock that stuck out from Rannock\'s fortress. FireClan had long since penetrated the mirror and now had full access. The ship was manuevered so that it would be possible for someone to exit and go onto the rocky ledge. The door opened, and out stepped Avretta herself.

\"I\'ll leave the troops out of this,\" she said, \"Be thankful. Two teenage brats and an old imp wouldn\'t last a minute against a whole army.\"

\"I\'m not old, woman!\" Kai sputtered angrily.

\"You\'re to fight alone,\" Rannock said to Umi, \"Destiny has chosen you, and my own attacks would be useless and have no effect on Avretta. But you\'re never alone...\" he took her own hand in his and touched her heart, \"Here.\"

Umi nodded silently, blinking back grateful tears. She turned away to face Avretta. At that moment, a wordless pact was made between them: This was it. They couldn\'t both live, and so one of them was about to meet her end.

\"Tidal Wave!\" Umi cried, holding out her hands and concentrating hard. A large wave of water appeared seemingly out of nowhere and swooped down on Avretta. She coughed and sputtered for a moment with her red-and-grey FireClan armor already soaking wet. However, in a few moments she had resumed her battle stance.

\"Remember your training,\" Kai called to Umi.

Of course! Tidal Waves were strictly for distracting only so that the user could have the oppurtunity to launch a more offensive attack. Avretta was still recovering, and so Umi called upon a powerful attack.

\"Water Blade!\" she cried. A sword that seemed to be made of water yet still solid appeared in her hand. She ran towards Avretta, and an engine-red sword appeared in the FireClan leader\'s hand. They clashed, water and fire, until Umi\'s sword dissipated into thin air and she was forced to retreat a few meters back.

\"Kaijet!\" Umi cried, holding out her right hand with her palm completely flat. A thick stream of blue water shot at Avretta, who generated an even thicker force field of fire to block it. Even though water normally had an advantage over fire, the beam could not penetrate the shield.

And then, suddenly, the sun peeked through the dark clouds, glinting off of Umi\'s aqua-blue, Kai-made armor. A deep, rich feminine voice slithered down from the heavens.

\"I am the great spirit once worshipped by WaterClan,\" the voice said, \"And it is time for our Clan to find its redemption. You...you are the heir to WaterClan. We gods selected you even before your birth so that you would be destined to become the great warrior of the Waterans. Take this sword - use it well.\"

A sword as blue as the sea appeared in Umi\'s hand. Even Kai and Rannock looked dumbfounded. She tried hard to process the information she had just obtained. She was destined to bring down the foe of WaterClan...so that the clans\' souls could rest in peace, as she understood it.

Umi nodded solemnly. She rushed at Avretta with her new sword in hand, and their blades clashed once again. She swiped at Avretta and managed to cut her cheek deeply, and in turn, Avretta managed to slash Umi\'s arm with her red sword.

They continued, trying to swing at each other and deflect blows at the same time. Finally, an exhausted Umi backed off, knowing she would have to resort to magic now. But...there was only one strong offensive spell left, only one that could defeat Avretta once and for all. It was the only spell that Umi had never managed to do right, but it was her last resort.

Umi channeled all of her energy and mental concentration into this one attack. She snapped her head up at last and cried, \"Aqua Tornado!\"

The water cyclone emerged fully formed for the first time and whipped its way toward Avretta, sucking her up in its deadly grasp. She was swirled around and eventually dropped onto the hard stone. The cyclone faded away.

Umi strolled over to Avretta, who was lying on the ground, weak. But Umi did not use her sword. She threw it to the ground and held out her hand. Avretta grabbed it, and Umi pulled her up with little difficulty.

\"I...I understand what I have done,\" Avretta said, \"I apologize deeply. We...we will be leaving Cephiro forever. We are a wealthy clan, and the last remaining. There is no need to take any more worlds. I\'m afraid we cannot undo the past, but I hope you can forgive me.\"

\"Yes,\" Umi said, \"I can.\"

Avretta stepped backwards onto the ship. \"Goodbye...and thank you,\" she said to Umi. And then she flashed one bittersweet smile at Rannock, and she and the battleship were gone. As the sun glowed down on her, Umi felt as if the gods were smiling down at her. She had fulfilled her destiny.

She returned to Rannock, and they kissed, exploring inside each other\'s mouths with their tongues, which intertwined...and then broke apart. Umi had realized something horrble - her legs were fading away. \"I\'m...returning to Earth...\" she said, her voice cracking. And then she looked up at Rannock and managed to utter eight more words: \"I mean it this time. I love you.\"

\"I...I love you too, Umi,\" he said, and tears began to fall silently down both of their cheeks. They embraced one last time.

And then the last of Umi faded away. She found herself in a place more familiar than any other, a place she had missed in the few months that she had been away from it.

Home.
