10: Kazuhou

Chapter 10
10: Kazuhou

-3-3-3-3-

Maybe if he tried a little harder, he’d be able to connect mentally with his brother on the other side of the wall. However, he was exhausted. He had eagerly crashed onto his bed face first, the pillow puffing to the hard contact. The morning’s events were still plastered into his thoughts. He may have not felt any remorse for his mother, but his friends were different. They were gone…forever. It almost brought tears to his eyes. He would have to learn not to get himself attached to people, because now that he knew about the woman’s power, more people would be dying. He sighed with exasperation as he flipped over onto his back and peered out his one, small window.

The moon beamed an ugly red. It was as if the moon had gone out into a ruthless battle and soaked in the blood of its enemies. Kazuhou couldn’t exactly deny that the color wasn’t soothing to him. It actually lulled him. He closed his eyes and quietly basked in the moon’s crimson rays.

Images from three nights ago started to dance behind his eyelids. He had to help Ms. Kujou to relax Ryuma who had woken up from a nightmare. Even though it was a short glimpse of the other teen, before Kujou had sent him away, Ryuma’s imploring visage firmly planted itself into his intellect. The green haired alter looked so scared and helpless, and yet, at the same time he expressed neither. His yellow eyes carried a burning desire to be free or something to end his misery. Yes, the misery; he remembered it well. Many times Kazuhou had witnessed the torture from a distance, and only once was he able to stop the others from beating him because of Ryuma’s obstinacy. Ryuma had given Kazuhou a small nod in appreciation, but that appreciation was short lived when the guards dragged him away and locked him into a restraint room. Though the contact was short, he felt something about the other teen that was familiar and in a way welcoming. It was a sensation that’d make your heart skip a beat and then numb your mind, including when there was a friendly smile involved, even if that smile had false insecurities.

“Kazuhou?” Someone called out to him, but whom? He almost thought it was Kujou, about to ask for his assistance, but the voice belonged to a young man. “Kazuhou!” It was more demanding this time. He opened his eyes languidly and sat up. “Who’s there?”

There was no response.

The room was eerily dark; now that the moon’s red, rays had vanished behind the buildings. He was expecting to feel someone’s gaze upon him from one of the corners in the room. However, he felt alone, utterly alone. “Who was calling me?” He whispered to himself as he slid out of bed and approached the door to open it. The light from the hallway flooded the darkness, lighting every empty crook. It revealed no one except him standing in the doorway facing his room. His eyes shifted slightly to the right toward the window. A black raven sat on the windowsill, peering in at him. It bobbed its head up and down before stretching its wings and flapping off.

Kazuhou grumbled under his breath and shut the door, blocking out the light once again. He sat down on his bed and gazed at the tiled floor. “I must be hallucinating.” He smirked before concluding. “Too much work.” He spread his arms out and landed against his bed, his eyes rolling back to look out the window. He blinked when the raven returned, sitting on the sill. “Wha-? What’s the matter with you, you stupid bird?”

The raven let out an obnoxious khaa for a response.

“Whatever.” Kazuhou murmured before closing his eyes. He was practically lost to sleep when he heard the voice again. “Kazuhou.” He sat up abruptly with shock. “Damn it! What do you want?”

Again, there was no response.

Kazuhou crawled under the sheets and buried his head underneath his pillow. The raven let out another cry before settling to rest on the sill for the rest of the night.

“What’s the matter with you?” Kujou asked, gazing at the teen’s tired expression. “It looks like you’ve been out all night.”

Kazuhou shook his head negatively. “No, ma’am. I couldn’t sleep well last night because of a stupid raven sitting on my windowsill.” He wasn’t about to tell her about the voice he heard all night every time he was about to fall asleep. However, that voice became familiar as it progressed louder and clearer. When he first heard it, it just sounded like static from a bad radio station, but it was just something that needed tampered with until it came in stronger. What was strange about the voice was that it stopped calling out his name and started talking in persuasion wise. It kept saying, ‘Come with me. Leave HOLY! We can take it down if we work together.’ Kazuhou wasn’t so sure if he was getting the concept of the banter. Did he seriously want to destroy something that took care of him since he was a baby? Nonetheless, HOLY was responsible for so many deaths, mainly native alters who didn’t obey their every whim. He closed his eyes, about to fall asleep while standing until Kujou tapped him on the forehead.

“Pay attention,” she demanded. “You can’t be falling asleep on the job.”

He rubbed his forehead with a sour look on his face. ‘Bitch,’ he chided mentally. ‘I really hate her.’

“Just one more day until Ryuma will be set to destroy Ryuhou and Kazuma,” she murmured more to herself than Kazuhou. He was ignoring her anyways, staring at something that wasn’t even there to his side. He yawned widely, accidentally moaning to the stretch of his lower jaw.

Kujou hissed when she heard the irritation from her pupil’s mouth. She turned to face him, only to receive her own glare from the teen, as if he was challenging her to make a comment about his risky action.

He was really too tired to care what she thought about it right now. He weakly smiled when she turned away with a warning scowl crossing her features. ‘Did I mention that I really REALLY hate her?’

It was finally time to go out on his patrol of the city. He only got as far as the ruins of the wall that Ryuma created. He sighed as he sat down on part of the broken down wall and closed his eyes. “I kind of wish he would return. Maybe I’d join him instead.” He leaned back until he encountered another part of the wall, relaxing against it comfortably. “I miss him to. He was the only one that kept HOLY interesting…when he wasn’t getting punished that is.” He opened his eyes warily when he heard a few rocks fall out of place near the hole in the wall. It didn’t reverberate like old rubble falling. It sounded more like someone kicking it out of the way. He waited a moment until the figure pronounced himself or herself. An anxious sensation rushed through Kazuhou’s veins. The warmth of familiarity rubbed around in his chest as he began to stand and make himself known to the intruder who just stepped through the wall. “Ryuma?”

Ryuma looked up steadily, unfazed by the other’s recognition of him. “Hey, I know you! You’re that woman’s slave.”

“Slave?” Kazuhou flushed with frustration. “I’m not her slave! I’m her co-worker.” He cleared his throat before warning the other teen of the upcoming danger. “You could be caught if they find out you’re here.” He approached the intruder until they were in arms reach of each other. “Get out of here.”

The rebellious teen sneered. “Why aren’t YOU trying to capture me?” He tilted his head to the side. “Anyways! I can’t leave until I find someone.”

“I just don’t want to see you get hurt anymore,” Kazuhou explained softly. “Who are you looking for?” He asked, forgetting about the other’s safety for the moment.

“I’m not sure. I was talking to him in my dreams last night. He told me he was from this city and his name is Kazuhou.” Ryuma grinned like a child who just accomplished something that an adult could have done easily. “Do you happen to know who he is?”

Kazuhou’s eyes widened in shock as he recalled last night’s conversation. ‘It was Ryuma? I knew it! I just knew it!’ “Ehm…no. I’m afraid not.”

“Oh,” Ryuma frowned. “Oh well. I can find him then, no problem. Thanks anyways.” He started to walk pass when the other alter stepped into his path, his eyes concealed by a dark shadow.

“I’m afraid I can’t allow you to do that.” A block of cement in the distance disintegrated as an outline of a small figure formed in front of Kazuhou. The light slowly faded, presenting the figure that resembled Zetsuei, only with his arms freely hanging to his side, and the colors covering his body were red, yellow, and orange. His face used the same shield as Zetsuei’s and opened on the right side as well, revealing half of his blank expression.

“I see. You won’t let me go unless I win, right?” Ryuma mused.

Kazuhou frowned, finally exposing his eyes from the darkness. They illuminated brightly from the aura erupting around his body from the earth below his feet. “Even then, I can’t let you go.”

Ryuma hissed through his teeth with aggravation. “I won’t let you stop me!” In a flash, his left arm transformed and aimed it directly at the tri-colored figure standing before him. “Out of my way!”
