Chapter 11: A New Partner
Spike sighed as he breathed out a plume of silver smoke. Jet was out on a bounty run, and Faye was with Jack, napping. Something in the air smelled wrong, he paused and spun from his perch on the top of the landing .

Amaya smiled to him slyly. “Hi,” she greeted.
“Hey,” he greeted back.
“Been a long time, Spike. It’s funny, no matter how much time changes, you and Vicious have never really changed. I mean, you’ve changed slightly, but you’re still the same men. The same boys I met all those years ago. “
“What do you want? Jet isn’t here,” he said smoothly.
“Don’t be so apprehensive, Spike. I actually came to see you,” she said as she took a seat next to him.
“What would you want to say to me?”
Amaya winced at that barb. “I deserve that.”
“Three years! Where the fuck were you?!” he shouted.
“The first was in a cryo tube. The other two, I’ve been that Wolf that everyone in Mars is talking about.”
“I noticed. But you… you never even tried to contact me.” Amaya laughed, causing him to shiver in fear. “What the hell happened to you?” he asked softly.
“I’m not supposed to be alive, but someone decided that I should be anyways. I’m just a shell,” she said as she lit a cigarette and let out a line of smoke.
“I can see that. Where are you staying now, Wraith?” he asked.
Amaya winced. It was his old name for her when they were teenagers, He had always said that he could smell death on her, that she was like a wraith when she stalked her prey. “With Vicious and Sith.”
“How are they?” he asked.
“Going to have a family.”
Spike laughed. “No, really, tell me.”
Amaya punched him lightly in the arm. “I did. Sith’s pregnant with their first. He’s going to propose as soon as he can locate his spine,” Amaya teased.
Spike chuckled. “He never was good with the emotional crap, of course, Sith was always worse.”
“She’s actually cut out for motherhood, I think. You should see her with Aurora,” she said, a faraway look in her eyes.
oes oes she know?” he asked.
“No, Aurora will never know who I really am. Her mother’s dead.”
Spike sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder. “You know, he’s still in love with you?”
Amaya sighed and shook her head. “He shouldn’t be, I even let him watch me kill. He should hate me, fear me, but not love me.”
“He’s stupid, what can I tell you.”
Amaya snorted. “I suppose. I still love him too, you know.”
“I know. It’s hard to not to notice the blush whenever anyone mentions him.”
Amaya scowled and slugged him in the shoulder again. “Idiot.”
Spike laughed and whimpered. “Ow! That hurt, damn it!” he whined.
“Baby,” she grumbled as she tossed her cigarette into the water below. “I’ll see you around, Spike,” she bid as she stood and turned to leave.
Spike snickered and shook his head as he heard her walk off the ship. ‘She may be a dead woman, but her punches still hurt.’

Amaya sat before a smoky audience, a guitar in hand. The microphone before he whined a bit with interference before she began to strum her long fingers against the taut strings of the guitar.

The bar was silent, before a roar of applause washed over the small crowd. Amaya grinned and gave an incline of her head before she slung her instrument over her shoulder and walked off the small stage. ‘I love open mic night,’ she sighed mentally.
“Not too bad,” an accented voice congratulated. “An old song from before the gate accident, right?”
Amaya turned to her admirer. “Yeah, it is.”
He was handsome, platinum colored hair and blue eyes, dressed in a black t-shirt and jeans. She had seen him there before. He was a local and a poet of some merit. He was also from the Britannia colony on Venus. Amaya smiled to the man and extended a hand to him. “Amaya,” she introduced.
“James, you’re good,” he greeted back as he shook her hand. She could feel the calluses on his hand that only came from practice with weaponry. “I never knew that the Wolf of the Night Rain would be so talented.”
Amaya laughed. “You’re my new partner, aren’t you?” she asked.
“Yup, I’m called Wraith, in some circles.”
Amaya chuckled. “I heard of you, you’re good. Nice to know that Vicious would send someone near my ability.”
Wraith smiled, his tongue pushing behind his teeth. It made him look like he was thinking dirty, and mher her like him more and more. “Only near? Baby, I am at your level.”
Amaya moved quickly behind him, only to see him facing her, his smug look still in place. Amaya smiled slyly. “Oh, this will be fun.”
