Evangelion Ressurection: Hell on Earth Chapter 11

Shinji was half asleep with his old SDAT playing music into his ears when he felt the vibrating on his hip. Instantly he was up, and sprinting from the house. Already the lights on the pager were dancing, and there was no doubt in his mind that the newest Angel had appeared somewhere out there. -Couldn't this thing have waited until after my nap?- The stairs seemed to fade under him as he went down them three at a time.

The city was already beginning to lock down, and it was surprising to him to see everyone so quickly and efficiently doing what they had to do to ensure their survival. There was no way of knowing how long they had until the Angel would reach whatever its intended target was, so Shinji had no time to stop and watch the people suddenly moving with a new sense of urgency. Nearly twenty minutes later he had reached the above ground transition station, and slid his card through the reader before sprinting across the lobby. People were gathered here and there about the interiour, people that shouldn't have been there, but because of the Angel warning had probably been allowed in.

A trio of armed guards stood around the elevator, and the weapons leveled at Shinji as he came barreling towards them. Recognizing their intent to shoot should anyone close within a certain distance Shinji held up the black and white card, and one guard came forward to inspect it while Shinji huffed and puffed from his short run. Within moments Shinji had been ushered to the elevator and was on his way down the glass tube. Out of breath he managed to gasp out to the guard that had boarded the elevator with him, "So much for a day off..."

Ritsuko looked over the displayed information that came across the screen of her personal computer terminal, and made several marks on her clipboard as well as mental notes. She kicked back in the chair and glanced to Toji, he was making a note on his own computer when a light began to flash above the screen showing the images of the three pilots in the entry plugs. Ritsuko shot to her feet and looked at the information scrolling across her screen.

Cursing mentally she picked up the microphone and keyed up so that all three could hear her, "Alright, looks like we'll be cutting the tests short today." Before she could even continue a pair of celebratory hoots came across the speakers, more specifically from Kensuke and Asuka's plugs. Despite the feeling that they were going to be done two hours ahead of schedule, Ritsuko had to go and shatter their feelings of celebration, "The reason being we've got an incoming Angel. Asuka and Kensuke you're both going to have the plugs transferred directly to your Evas from here, no need to get out. Rei, you're on stand by in Unit 00 because the arm isn't finished it's regeneration cycle yet. Understood?" Three heads bobbed, and Ritsuko initiated the sequence to pull plugs two and three out, and send them upstairs immediately, the first would go shortly.

----------------

Misato heard the first sirens sounding from her office, and was quick to be at the command center her voice ringing out clearly over the confusion, "Lieutenant Kaji, what's the situation?"

"One minute ago we received a blue signal which jumped spectrums, not just once but several times. We do not know whether it is an Angel yet as we have been unable to visually confirm the readings. The signal went out to the pilots, Evas 02 and 05 should be ready to launch at any moment."

Misato looked at the side screen that showed the status of Unit 00's regeneration, then looked at the location highlighted on the map. As the dot approached Tokyo-3 it shifted from blue to and indigo in color, then a moment later to a purple hue. She shook her head, this angel was quite confusing because of the constant pattern shifting that was going on. Instead she looked to another monitor that showed the interiour of the transfer elevator which suddenly showed signs of movement, and she let out a sigh of relief when Shinji entered in.

"Kaji, I want Unit 01 prepared for departure as well, we will intercept at this point." A pulsating red dot glowed on the map, and she looked down to the newest member of the command staff, and nodded, "I want the Evas air dropped, and cables run in from Nagoya to supply them with power. Run two sets, Unit 01's S2 organ is fully functional according to Doctor Akagi. We have two hours until we intercept, now get a move on!"

"Ma'am!" He didn't salute as Misato had told him, and he began to delegate the orders to the trio of subordinates he had, "Maya see to the loading of the three Evas onto the planes. Aoda I need those cables, and we have thirty minutes to get them into position. Hyuga see to it that a fourth plane is set up in support, I want a full array of weaponry for the Evangelions in a cargo drop box. Also set up a fifth plane in the case we may have to send out Unit 00. Move it people, we now have twenty nine minutes to make this happen. No screw ups."

Misato watched the Lieutenant give out the orders, the way he was strict but didn't over delegate the jobs to people. He had delegated the orders to them in their fields of primary or secondary expertise. Aoba had always been a technical genius, and he would be just the man to coordinate Nagoya into getting the cables set up. Maya knew most about the Evas, and Hyuga knew his weaponry as much as he knew the measurements of all the women he looked at in those magazines. In a little under a week he had learned all this about them.

-He's certainly something else, less like Ryouji than I thought.. but he's got a strong sense of honor, and obviously he looked over the information himself and got to know the personality traits of his subordinates so that they can work in a most efficient manner. All this means shit when it comes to combatting the Angels, let's see how he handles that.-

----------------

Shinji found himself caught between an argument consisting of Kensuke and Auska both thinking they should be the one to try to attack first. Instead of getting into the middle of the argument Shinji found himself once again looking not into the words of the others. He was trying to mentally prepare himself, but the constant distractions from the bickering duo caused him to sigh in frustation. Finally he flipped open a line to the other two, "You know, if this Angel is half as powerful as the last one, there will be plenty of Angel to go around. So don't worry about who hits first."

Kensuke made a surprised squeak as if he had been expecting Shinji to side with him. He'd been secretly trying to get Shinji involved in the quarrel, not for arguments sake but he felt it was his responsibility to try and get the other two together. He hadn't spent much more than a few minutes since Shinji had been back with the both of them together, but the secret glances Kensuke had seen them sending in each others direction when the other hadn't been looking. He threw up his hands and crossed his arms.

"You know Aida, you remind me a big banana in that yellow plug suit of yours."

"Ha ha Asuka. Now would you be quiet because we're going to be going to be going into battle any moment."

Asuka turned her head away from Kensuke's visage on the monitors and gave a hmph as if to blow him off completely. Through the screen Asuka watched Shinji, he wasn't nervously fidgeting with something as he would have done years ago in the Eva, but he was sitting there almost like he was meditating. She almost said something to him, she wanted him to say something, anything because it was the newfound confidence in the Eva that had inspired her in the last battle. Whether he liked it or not, Shinji had become almost a de facto leader to the other pilots of the Evangelions. Asuka sighed and shifted back around straight in her seat as a timer popped into the middle of her vision field and a digitized voice infiltrated the radio system, "One minute until drop zone.. target is currently thirteen kilometers from intercept zone."

Shinji looked from one screen to the other, Kensuke and Asuka, respectively and gave a slight nod before he gripped the controls of the Evangelion and prepared for the drop. Whilst watching the timer drop rapidly Shinji reclined back into the seat, trying to relax his body to keep it from becoming so tense that he would be unable to move. Finally a trio of beeps went off, and there was the sensation of weightlessness as the trio of Evas dropped downwards towards the ground.

The three Evangelions touched down in unison, their legs flexing from the fall before they rose. Misato's voice echoed through each of the entry plugs, "Eva 05, after hooking up I want you on sniper detail covering Units 01 and 02. Unit 01 retreive the weapons package, and pass out weaponry. I want you to make absolutely sure there is never less than one weapon on this Angel at all times. Now move out."

As the pair of units moved to their power connections, Eva 01 placed itself to capture the falling cargo box before the unit opened. A single large positron rifle was the first weapon to clear the crate, and be handed over to the golden colored Eva 05. Gripping the rifle and without a word the Evangelion loped off at a run, the cover offered by a hill a short distance off was the perfect cover that any sniper could hope for. A pallet rifle was passed over to Unit 02 and the pair took positions further up, their AT fields spread to their maximum in an attempt to nullify that of the incoming angel.

Finally the had visual confirmation of the Angel, an odd creature. The body resembled that of a giant chicken, complete with malformed wings that twisted in an odd way leading Shinji to wonder if flight was possible with them. The pair of legs that sprouted from the hips seemed quite akin to those of a velociraptor, complete with the large sickle-like claw appendage. However odd the body may have seemed, the head was the most unique attribute about the creature. The head was elongated and not proportionate to its body, and it looked like the entire head was mouth. When Kensuke saw the Angel through the targetting scopes he muttered to himself and it managed to be picked up and translated to the other entry plugs, "My god that thing is all mouth.."

Asuka looked at the Angel as it came closer, and she looked up at a graphical display thtat showed the AT fields that she and Shinji had spread as over lapping areas of black lines. The Angel hadn't yet deployed an AT field, but why? This was starting to not add up whatsoever, the Angel had to know they were there, and that they were armed but there was no AT field. Asuka couldn't help her thoughts at that moment, -Whatever this thing must just be dumb as a box of rocks..-

Shinji on the other hand looked back at Kensuke, his voice coming through into the plugs of the other, "Alright, Kensuke lead it off with a rifle shot, Asuka and I will move in to take it out. It still hasn't put up an AT field so we might have a chance of sniping it before it can." Kensuke nodded and put the targetting reticule over the Angel's core which sat in the middle of its chest facing forward. His finger squeezed the trigger, and the positron rifle bucked against the Eva despite the bracing and Kensuke rocked in the entry plug.

In an instant a pair of Evangelions, one purple and one red, came from cover and offered up a barrage from pallet rifles. Shinji could hear in the command center line a cheer go up, and Aoda yelling out a congratulations they had lost track of the signal. The smoke swirled around where the Angel had once stood, and finally cleared to show the Angel no longer standing there, but what looked like a swirl of color floating in the air. Instantly Shinji's rifle came up knowing that hadn't been there before.

The globe in midair shimmered and pulsed, the command center had gone quiet at the appearance of this phenomenae. After pulsing through a scale of colors the sphere began to suddenly look like a whirlpool viewed from above. Hues of red and yellow, purple and green all ran apart as the vortex began to spin faster. Finally once per second from the vortex flew a color which rained down to the earth spattering into the ground in a circle around the Angel. No longer did it look like a whirlpool viewed from above, now it was more like a clear pristeen glove of crystal and had stopped moving but settled to the ground instead.

----------------

Misato watched this all place across the monitors, and shook her head. This angel had seemingly been all to easy to beat, but there was the fact that it hadn't just died like the other angels. It had done something really weird, and she couldn't help but wonder why it had done so. Finally she turned to Maya, "Give me a sattelite image of this, I want to know what it was throwing out. I don't know whether the Angel is done for, or if it's just playing dead."

Maya was quick at work, the new satellite codes she'd been given by Kaji allowed her to quickly work her way through the network and pinpoint a satellite that could give them an orbital image. Within two minutes of starting on the network there was an orbital photo of the sight. Everyone in the command center looked at the display, and it was Kaji that made a comment of the layout, "It reminds me of an artist's palette, colors aren't arranged like they would be. Yet colors layed out in a circle around a central point.."

Misato had no choice but to agree with the man's words, and when the colors themselves began to pulsate and glimmer in a circle around the crystal globe in the middle Misato could only watch helplessly as things had gone from great thinking they had destroyed the angel, to worse than she could have imagined them to be.

----------------

What Misato and the others in the command center couldn't see from an orbital view the three Evangelion pilots saw from a horizontal view in that direction. Each of the piles of "color" began to bubble upwards. It looked like the bubbles a child would blow from a wand with a soap solution, until they popped. When each of the bubbles had popped there stood a replica of the Angel they had sworn was just destroyed with the positron rifle shot Kensuke had made.

Shinji's eyes widened, they were half the size of the original but there were now nine of those things standing in a circle around the central crystal globe. In moments the creatures began to spread out, even halfsized they looked intimidating considering that it was a three on one situation, and that the odds were made higher because Kensuke was using a sniper rifle that seemed to have no effect.

Kensuke looked from one of the mini-Angels to another, each of them was a different solid color. All the Angels began to move as one forming out into a line in front of the area that had spawned them and Kensuke couldn't help the feeling of fear that crept slowly into his body, -My god what the hell is this thing?! Well, looks like we just gotta destroy the little ones.-

Asuka was the first one into action, lowering her pallet rifle and firing off a short burst at one of the Angels, an Angel the color of blood. There was once again no AT field active around the creature and in a large splattering display it disappeared to which Asuka grinned and commented onto the radio, "See, we just gotta destroy the little ones!"

Kensuke watched the color field, and almost instantly the red angel reappeared and was formed once again. Watching as the waddling creature joined its brethren on the line, Kensuke shook his head, "Think again Asuka, it reformed.. I think I can hit that globe from here, so maybe that's what we need to do."

The angels seemed to be making no move whatsoever after their brother had been hit. However when the positron beam from the rifle passed over them and towards the globe they were instantly running, directly towards Kensuke's position. Around the globe sprang a hexagonal field that caused the beam to reflect off and upwards. Shinji looked to Asuka's picture on the screen, "That's an AT field, but we can't turn it off we're too far away. Cover Kensuke, and we'll advance on the globe and try to take these things down along with that AT field so he can hit it."

Asuka was forced to agree, the logic Shinji had used to come up with the plan in just a few moments was impeccable, "Understood." One of the smaller Angels exploded in a shower of blue colored droplets from the impact of Shinji's pallet rifle rounds. Instantly it was reformed however and he swore inside the entry plug. Now the attention of the little ones was divided between Kensuke that had attacked the globe, and Shinji that had fired in defense of Kensuke. A moment later it was divided yet another way as the green angel's copy exploded. From the "palette of colors" once again another green angel was formed.

It was Shinji that took quick stock of the battlefield and brought his rifle around to bear ready to fire. However the nine angels had once again stopped momentarily. In moments they split and three headed for each of the Evas in what seemed like a divide and conquer maneuver, "What the fuck are these things?! We kill them and they reform, how the hell are we supposed to beat something like that?!"

Things weren't looking good. Eva 01 was being charged by angels of white, red and green. Unit 02 by angels of black, blue and orange. And the final unit, Eva 05 was under attack from angels of deep blue almost purple hue, violet, and yellow. Things couldn't have been worse.
