Chapter 11
Mamoru still had a smile on his face when he got back to his apartment. He had gone to see Kunzite and Zoisite right after he was finished work today. Who knew that it was possible to do that with your...
The look on Usagi's face when he opened the the door made him freeze. Her expression was a mixture of a pout and anger as she stood up from the kitchen table. The next thing Mamoru noticed was that she was dressed up. 'Damn it, what did I forget?'
“You forgot?” she asked, although it was much more a statement of the obvious.
It wasn't her birthday, nor was it their anniversary. It was summer right now, so Valentines Day or White Day weren't options. She was dressed up, so they had probably been planning to go out somewhere...
“I'm sorry,” Mamoru apologized, finally entering the apartment and closing the door.
“I had to get these reservations three months ago too.”
It was then that Mamoru clued in. Usagi had been wanting to go to this new, and very popular, restaurant in the area. Mamoru himself hadn't had much interest, but he had agreed to go since Usagi wanted to so much. “Oh, that's right,” he said. “I'm really sorry. It wasn't on the calendar.”
Still grumpy, Usagi pointed to said calender, with the date clearly marked. “I marked it there as soon as the reservation were confirmed. Three months ago.”
“I'm sorry.”
Mamoru did truly feel bad about forgetting. If he had known, he most certainly would have come home right after work. He sat down at the table and Usagi joined him. “Is something wrong?” she asked, no longer looking as angry as she did earlier. “You've been forgetting a lot of things lately.”
It was true, and most of the time it was because he was off visiting Zoisite. “I've been concerning myself with the Tennou too much lately,” he explained, using the excuse he had come up with earlier. Zoisite suggested that he not lie about his location to Usagi, just his activities.
“You said that they are having trouble adjusting?”
Mamoru nodded. “They didn't tell me until recently. After all, this world is very different from the one they grew up in. They didn't have the advantage of being reborn as we did. I had no idea until I caught them arguing with each other.”
Usagi nodded, understanding. “Nephrite seems adjusted well enough. Can't he help them?”
Mamoru gave a small smile and shook his head, “he doesn't get along well with the others and seems to avoid them if he can.” This was in fact the truth, as far as Mamoru could tell. Nephrite never seemed to be around when he visited, even when he wasn't working.
Neither said anything for a while. Mamoru sat and waited while Usagi contemplated what to say or ask next. He probably should call them and tell them that he won't be over for a couple days, so that he could make this up to Usagi.
The phone rang then and Mamoru got up to answer it. “Moshi moshi?”
“Master.”
“Zoisite?” There was something in his voice that told Mamoru this was not a normal phone call. “What's wrong?”
Mamoru noticed that Usagi got out of her chair and came over to stand near him, but soon after was completely focused on Zoisite's voice.
“It's Jadeite, Master. He left.”
“Left?”
“He come home this afternoon after going for a walk. Without warning he packed his things and told us he was leaving. He refused to tell us why or where.”
Mamoru was silent for a moment. He had no idea why Jadeite would do such a thing. “Has anything been wrong with him lately?”
A pause on Zoisite's end. “In a sense. He told me something last night, but it's not related to this. I had no idea he was going to do this.”
Kunzite's voice spoke up in the distance. “And yet you won't tell us what he told you.”
“We felt you needed to know, Master, so I called you,” Zoisite continued, ignoring Kunzite.
“Thank you, I'll...” Mamoru trailed off and glanced at Usagi. She looked genuinely concerned, but Mamoru knew that he couldn't leave and go back to the house right now. “I'll come over when I can,” he finished.
“I understand.”
Mamoru cradled the phone and tried to think through Jadeite's situation. Of course, when Mamoru visited the last couple times, he hardly paid attention to the youngest Tennou. He typically went right to the bedroom, and then left right after. As far as he could tell, Jadeite had been doing well. No problems with the other Tennou, and he seemed to even have a social life.
“Mamoru? What happened?”
Mamoru turned and faced his wife, “Jadeite left, moved out without any warning. They don't know why or where he went.” Mamoru sighed, feeling anxious over the situation. “I don't understand.”
Usagi tried to offer a smile. “Maybe you should go back then. See if you can't track him down.”
Mamoru shook his head. “It's alright, I don't have to-”
“Go,” Usagi said, with more force this time. “I understand your need to help them. I'd do the same thing.”
Mamoru smiled and gave Usagi a hug. “Thank you,” he said, “and I am sorry, I will make this up to you.”
He got to Kunzite's home as quickly as he could. He found the three remaining residents in the kitchen, Nephrite in his civilian attire, and Zoisite and Kunzite in their Tennou forms as was usual now. Zoisite was seated, Kunzite stood with his hands on the table, and Nephrite had located himself off from the pair, leaning against the wall.
“Master, I'm glad you're here. Maybe you can talk some sense into him,” Kunzite said, gesturing at Zoisite.
Mamoru raised an eyebrow in question.
Zoisite gave an annoyed glance to Kunzite, but proceeded to explain. “Jadeite... confessed something to me last night in confidence, and it has nothing to do with why he ran away.”
“He told you were he's been going every night, and now he's moved out. I'd say we have a right to know.”
“Kunzite,” Mamoru said, hoping to use some of his authority here to get the Tennou leader to back off. “Zoisite, you're sure that whatever he told you last night couldn't have something to do with where he went?”
“I'm certain.”
Mamoru nodded, “in that case let's leave Jadeite's secret a secret, shall we? For now we should probably worry about where he went rather than why. Any thoughts?”
A look around the room told Mamoru that that was not the case. “Besides us, I don't know of anyone that he knows, and he wouldn't have the required funds to get his own place,” Zoisite explained.
“No one except for whoever he hangs around with at night.”
“Kunzite,” came Mamoru's second warning.
“There's no one,” Zoisite reiterated.
“You've tried his cell phone?”
“He left it here,” Kunzite pointed at the counter where the device lay. “And he made it very clear that he doesn't want us to know where he is.”
Remembering that Nephrite was in the room, Mamoru finally turned to him. “Nephrite, is there anything that you might be able to tell us?”
Nephrite shook his head. “No, except that I understand his need to leave. I'm sick of this bullshit as well.”
Mamoru just stared in shock as Nephrite turned and left the room without an explanation. What had he been talking about? “What was that?” Mamoru asked.
“Who knows, he's always upset about one thing or another,” Kunzite offered. “Back on the subject, Zoisite, you could find him using Soul Flight.”
Mamoru was familiar with the technique Zoisite had developed. It allowed him to appear wherever his target was located. It wasn't teleportation exactly, more like an out of body experience. Mamoru looked to Zoisite for his reaction.
He nodded. “The only problem is that I won't know where I'll appear until I'm there. If Jadeite happens to be in a busy part of town, I could cause a bit of a commotion.”
That wouldn't be ideal, Mamoru agreed. “Can you do it later tonight then? When he's more likely to be alone, or at least not in a crowded environment?”
“I can do that.”
“Please call me when you do. I'd like to know as well.”
That business settled, Kunzite changed the subject. “Now, Master, I don't suppose you came back for seconds, did you?” He wore his usual smirk now, and while his offer was tempting, Mamoru knew that he shouldn't stay much longer.
“I can't, I missed a date with Usagi tonight, and really need to make it up to her. I doubt I'll be able to come by tomorrow at all either.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Mamoru could have sworn that he saw Zoisite flinch, but when he turned his head to look at him fully, he was simply looking concerned. “I hope we didn't cause you any problems.”
“No, none that I couldn't explain away. All the same, I should be at home for the next couple of days.” Mamoru began to gather his things and head for the door. “But, please, do call me if you hear from Jadeite, regardless of the hour.”
“We will, Master.”
The look on Usagi's face when he opened the the door made him freeze. Her expression was a mixture of a pout and anger as she stood up from the kitchen table. The next thing Mamoru noticed was that she was dressed up. 'Damn it, what did I forget?'
