I woke up to the sun shining on my face through a window. As I wiped the sleep from my eyes I saw that I was in Kahiri’s bedroom and mine. I slowly got out of my bed and made it. I looked at the walls and saw that only exactly half of the room was decorated. The other half was an off white.
I also noticed that there were two beds, two dressers, two wardrobes, two desks, and two bookshelves. There was a thin white box on Kahiri’s desk and I couldn’t help but wonder what it was. I walked over to my dresser and look inside to find it empty. My wardrobe was the same. I then silently slipped out of the room and went downstairs. I wondered around the house and found my way to the kitchen. Once I stepped in the door my stomach growled and I decided to fix something to eat. I made a simple breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast.
I finished my food and went to the sink to wash my dishes. I then wondered the house again. I was so caught up in checking out the scenery that I ended up running into someone.
“Hey, watch where you’re going Kahiri! Just ‘cause Dad’s home doesn’t mean that you can go running into me,” complained a male voice.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I really didn’t mean to run into you. I was just checking out the house and I didn’t mean to run into you. By the way I’m Kihara not Kahiri. She’s still sleeping,” I said backing up and bowing repeatedly.
Once I ceceded bowing I looked him over. He had dirty blond hair that came to his earlobes and light brown eyes; and was wearing a cross around his neck, an open short sleeve white button up, black dress pants with a black belt, three black bracelets on his right wrist, a neat looking tattoo across his left side wrapping around to his back, and a ring on his middle and ring finger of his left hand.
“Wait . . . you’re Kihara? Then that means . . . is Mom here?” he asked.
“I take it you’re Chikato? No, Mom’s not here, and she won’t ever be here,” I said apologetically.
“What do you mean?” he asked.
“She died thirteen years ago. The only reason I survived was because one of the wolves from the tribe that killed Mom and the village liked me and refused to let any of the other wolves near me,” I explained.
“Then why didn’t Hikana report in?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” I said.
“She always did that kind of stuff. I thought she would have taken this seriously though,” he said.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"She ran off and didn't keep an eye on anything. If she had simply done her job, then Mom might still be here. She was supposed to make sure you and Mom were safe, and if anything happened she was to bring you and Mom here. Then she would go back and wait for Dad to come back to Mom, and tell him that you and Mom were safe. She obviously decided that there was something more important to do than insure yours and Mom's safety," he said.
"So, if she had simply done her job I wouldn't have ended up enduring Koga's bragging and constant over protectiveness?!" I screamed at the top of my lungs,
"AAAAAAAAAAACHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Who the hell is talking about me?!" exclaimed a female voice.
I quickly spun around and stared at the girl. She had black hair that came just above her bottom and brown eyes; and was wearing a one strap black top that came to the middle of her rib cage and a black skirt that came to her mid calf.
"That would be us, Hikana," Chikato said in an icy tone.
"Don't you dare talk to your older sister in that tone of voice Chikato," Hikana chided agitatedly.
"You're Hikana?" I asked calmly.
"Yeah. What's it to you pipsqueak?" she asked.
"Because of you Mom's gone!" I yelled. "If you had done your job she might still be alive and I wouldn't have had to deal with Koga!"
"Mmnnhh . . . Onee-chan . . . why are you yelling so early in the morning?" Kahiri asked coming up behind me and hugging me around my waist and nuzzling into my back like she was going to try and fall asleep against me.
"Kahiri, Hikana was supposed to guard me and Mom and make sure nothing happened to us. Because of her Mom's dead," I said calmly.
"Nee-chan . . . you said you didn't have anything of any importance you needed to do eleven years ago," Kahiri said peaking at Hikana over my shoulder with a hurt expression on her face.
"I didn't think that if I left for a few days it would matter. Then when I came back the village was burnt to the ground and Kihara and Mom weren't there so I thought they found somewhere else to stay," Hikana said.
"How dumb can you get? Couldn't you smell the stench of wolves all over that village? They barely gave me enough time to bury Mom and pay my respects before they dragged me away to live with them," I growled.
"Apparently Dad didn't tell you," Hikana said darkly.
"Tell me what?" I asked.
"One I have a short attention span and two Chikato and I don't have all the perks of having wings. We have only the normal human senses. Since you have wings you have heightened senses with your wings closed and with them open they're way better. I hate to admit it but I envy you guys," Hikana said.
"So you're blaming Mom's death on your attention span and the fact that you thought that since she had wings she could protect herself?" I asked getting angry again.
"Basically," she said.
"By the way Ane-chan, where have you been for the last few weeks?" Kahiri asked, apparently trying to change the subject.
"That's unacceptable!" I screamed.
"I was out with Kinaho," Hikana said, "Kihara I really can't change the past anymore than you can."
"I think you and Kin-kun make a very cute couple. Although I have to say I think Ani-chan and Koh-chan are cuter," Kahiri said.
"Who are you talking about?" I asked.
"Oh, you haven't seen Kin-kun and Koh-chan yet, but trust me you will, and you'll just love them," Kahiri said.
"By the way gaki, how old are you?" Chikato asked.
"I'm 15 and I would very much appreciate it if you wouldn't call me gaki," I said.
"Onee-chan he's just making his own nickname for you. Just like I did Onee-chan," Kahiri explained.
"But your nickname for me at least means sister," I said.
"15 huh? You'll be starting high school then," Chikato said.
"Yup and if Dad pulls enough strings you can be in the same classes as me," Kahiri cheered.
"You mean kind of like the schools in Fruits Basket?" I asked.
"Yeah, kinda. Are you telling me you've never been to school?" Kahiri asked.
"Yeah. Mom taught me everything at home," I said.
"So you've never set foot inside a classroom with 20 or more kids including yoourself?" Kahiri pressed.
"No," I said.
"You've never had to take an entrence exam?" she insisted.
"No, but I did have to take a lot of tests," I said.
"You really never set foot inside a school building?" she asked.
"NO! ALRIGHT? I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A FUCKING SCHOOL! THE ONLY EDUCATION I GOT WAS MOM FUCKING HOMESCHOOLING ME! IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT? DO I REALLY HAVE TO DO EVERY FUCKING THING YOU DO? FACE IT I WAS STUCK IN FEUTAL FUCKING JAPAN SINCE I WAS FUCKING BORN! THERE WEREN'T ANY FUCKING SCHOOLS TO FUCKING GO TO! MOM BARELY LET ME OUT OF THE FUCKING HOUSE! I WAS NEVER FUCKING TAUGHT WITH ANYONE ELSE THERE BUT ME! ARE YOU FUCKING HAPPY NOW?! HUH?!" I yelled losing my temper.
"What's all the yelling about up here?" called Dad's voice from the staircase behind Hikana.
"Onee-chan I didn't mean to make you angry. I just didn't understand how you had never set foot in a school before. I'm sorry Onee-chan," Kahiri said.
"You were poking fun at her? Now that's no way to treat 'Onee-chan' as you call her. Once you get the answer stop picking because if she lashes out physically I won't protect you," Dad said, "By the way Kihara, I was going to barrow you for the day. Is that okay?"
"Of course," I said jumping at the oportunity to get some fresh air before I exploded.
"Well then, if you guys would excuse us, I believe there is some shopping to be done," Dad said.
"Dad, can I come too. You know you're hopeless when it comes to clothes, and femenan nesseccities," Kahiri said.
