Sorting Things Out

Yamato stood in his room as Yutaka walked out the door, any gestures made to him were lost as his eyes were locked on his brother. He heard the door close, they could now speak freely without being heard. However the tense silence remained. Yamato stood there staring at his brother sitting on the bed, Takeru returned the stare. Both could see the gears turning in each other’s head, but still neither one said anything. Soon Yamato couldn’t stand it any longer he moved to sit on the bed, but Takeru’s hand shot up, silently telling Yamato “no”. Yamato in return took a step back, the tension in the silence growing.

Eventually it was Yamato again to break the stagnant tense air. “Takeru we need to talk.”

“Then talk Yamato.” Spat out Takeru.

“I don’t know where to start.” said Yamato.

“How about starting with how the hell you loving me is different than me loving you?” Takeru said trying to mask the hurt in his voice.

“I don’t get it.” Said Yamato remorsefully.

“When I told you I loved you, you freaked out and stormed out of the apartment, and stayed out all night. Then when you finally came home we agreed that it was all to be forgotten. That I was wrong in saying it at all. Then just a few minutes ago you tell me you love me, and it’s supposed to be okay. That I’m just supposed to accept it, and it justifies assaulting Yutaka like you did.” Explained Takeru.

“It isn’t like that Takeru.” Yamato countered.

“Then what is it like Yamato?” Takeru started to break down, “I would really like to know.”

“I don’t know if I can.” Yamato said regretfully.

“TRY!” Takuru huffed out as his eyes started to water.

Yamato let out a sigh. He didn’t even know where the feelings for his brother came from, but he knew they were there, and his brother wanted answers. Yamato began to explain, “I don’t know where the feelings came from. They could have been there for years, or they could have started growing only recently. It doesn’t really matter, does it? What matters is that I do have those feelings, and they’re for you Takeru. Only for you.”

Takeru wiped his eyes and then continued to look at his brother.

Yamato continued, “When you first got here I started having these dreams. I was with the same person in every dream and I didn’t know who it was. For some reason I told the band and Yutaka said that the dreams were my brain trying to live out repressed feelings. The dreams got more and more detailed the longer you stayed here. Then after you told me you loved me, it unlocked the door that was repressing the feelings. But part of me was still holding that door closed, still keeping me from recognizing that I returned that love. So I was scared, so I ran off when you told me. It wasn’t until earlier tonight at the concert that everything became clear. It was finally during the intermission that I was able to see the person in my dreams. That person was you Teeks. The guy of my dreams for the past week has been you. I then was consciously aware of my feelings, It made sense then why I was so angry at Yutaka for being around you, flirting with you earlier tonight. I was jealous. But the feelings were new to me and they unsettled me. So I locked them back up, I didn’t want to tell anyone. But then on the walk home when you and Yutaka were walking together and he had his hand on your shoulder, my jealousy flared up again, it was all I could do to bottle it up. But just now, when I came in and you two were in each other’s arms, that was too much. I couldn’t help myself, I wanted you, I wasn’t going to let Yutaka steal you.”

“That’s not a good enough reason for what you did Yamato.” Takeru said.

“I know.” Yamato said closing his eyes briefly to calm himself. He then looked at his brother and saw that he had stopped crying, “How are you doing?”

“To be honest I don’t know if I should be happy that you love me or pissed that you’re such a jealous asshole.” Admitted Takeru.

“I’d be content with both.” Said Yamato.

Takeru let out a sigh and hung his head. Yamato quietly walked over and sat next to his brother. Yamato put an arm around him and pulled him close. Takeru then leaned over and wrapped his arms around his brother. The two brothers sat there in each other’s arms for a while, before Takeru whispered, “I love you Onii-chan.”

“I love you too Otouto-chan.” Yamato whispered back. He then leaned down and kissed the top of his brother’s head. He got a comforting squeeze back in return. Yamato smiled and was content to sit there holding his little brother.

A few minutes passed before Takeru broke the silence again. “We were just talking.”

“Who was?” asked Yamato.

Takeru broke the embrace and sat up. “Yutaka and I. We were talking about our…..coming out experiences and we each just needed a hug.”

“Shit.” Yamato stood up. “I should probably go apologize.”

“Do you want me to go with you?” asked Takeru standing up also.

“No, you stay here, the others will be wanting to go to sleep soon, you’ll need to help get everyone settled. I’ll be back later.” Said Yamato, as he headed out the door. Takeru followed his brother out of the bed room. He went to the living room to join their friends while Yamato was called into the kitchen.
Yamato entered the kitchen and saw Taichi sitting there, waiting for him. “What happened Yamato? Yutaka left with quite the shiner.”

“He left? When? Did he say where he was going?” asked Yamato.

“Yes, A while ago, and no.” Answered Taichi, “Now you answer my question Yamato.”

“It’s complicated, I need to find Yutaka. I need to apologize.” Said Yamato back-stepping out of the kitchen.

“Then go, just promise we’ll talk later.” Said Taichi standing up.

“Sure thing Taichi, but this time, please don’t wait up.” Yamato said as he turned and left the kitchen and the apartment. Yamato ran towards the elevator, as Yamato waited for its arrival he pulled out his cell phone and let out a curse, the battery was dead. Just as he thought about going and borrowing one from his friends, the elevator doors opened. Yamato jumped into the elevator and hit the ground floor button. Then having reached the ground floor Yamato took off in the direction of Yutaka’s and Akira’s apartment.

After half an hour of running almost nonstop, Yamato was in front of a small old apartment building. Yamato was hunched over trying to catch his breath. Having caught his breath enough he ran up the stairs to his band members’ apartment. Yamato knocked on the door, and waited. Yamato knocked on the door, and waited some more. Yamato waited a little bit longer then kick the door out of frustration. Yamato made his way down the stairs, he had no idea where his friend, or possibly now ex-friend was at. Yamato thought he should check some of the local bars that Yutaka liked visiting. Yamato checked in the two nearest bars, but didn’t see any sign of him, and none of the patrons had seen him either. The other bar Yutaka visited was a few blocks away, so Yamato decided to cut through a nearby park. The moon and lights in the park were bright and shining off the playground equipment. While it was the shine off the large dome climbing frame that caught Yamato’s attention it was the figure hanging from their knees at the top of the large metal frame that kept it. Yamato walked closer to the figure and saw features that looked familiar, “Yutaka?”

“Yamato? What are you doing here?” said the voice from the top of the dome.

“I’m here to apologize.” Said Yamato, “Now get down here.”

“I’m perfectly fine up here thank you.” Responded Yutaka.

“Whatever. Yutaka, I’m sorry I punched you. It’s just I saw you flirting with Takeru all night, so when I saw you two like that I got overly jealous, and my emotions got the better of me. I’m sorry. Are you okay?”

“That depends. How are you and Takeru?” answered Yutaka

“Good. We both know how we feel about each other.” Said Yamato.

“I know that, I witnessed that much. So are you two……you know?” Yutaka said.

“Together? I think so, possibly.” Said Yamato, a smile coming to his face.

“Then it was all worth it.” Said Yutaka. “Now would you do me a favor Yamato?”

“Anything Yutaka.” Said Yamato.

“Help me down, I’m stuck.”

After helping the stuck drummer from his predicament Yamato and Yutaka spent some time with small talk and bullshitting, much like they usually did, before deciding that each should be getting home and getting some sleep. Upon returning to his apartment Yamato walked into a dark quiet apartment. Yamato looked into the living room and could make out four bodies asleep in various areas. He could see Jyou quietly asleep on the couch looking much like a mummy, and Koushiro was curled up asleep in one of the recliners. He also saw Taichi and Daisuke sprawled out on the floor, limbs stretched in every direction but in the darkness it was impossible to tell who was who. Yamato walked down the hall, he looked down to Taichi’s room, where he knew Sora, Miyako and Hikari were asleep as well. Yamato then snuck into his bedroom, over the sleeping bodies of Iori and Ken, and grabbed a towel and some “pajamas”. Yamato walked to the bathroom and quickly took a shower, just long enough to wash the makeup and sweat off his body. Yamato then put on the boxers and t-shirt that he had grabbed and walked back to his bedroom.

Yamato crawled into his bed, right away he felt the warmth from the other body that was sharing his bed. Yamato thinking that his brother was fast asleep like everyone else was shocked when his brother rolled over to face him and then scooted close to him. “You’re home.” Whispered Takeru a smile forming on his face.

“Yeah I know, now go to sleep.” Whispered back Yamato.

“Goodnight Onii-chan.”

“Goodnight Teeks.” Yamato then kissed his brother’s forehead. He then watched as the smile on his little brother’s face grew, and then continued to watch him till he fell asleep. Yamato then let his own eyes close and sleep quickly followed.

Hours passed and the night faded as the sun rose, but still the digidestined slept on. It had been a late night and they all were able to sleep, each of them clinging to their dreams except one. Yamato had awoken as his brother had turned over in the bed. Yamato was awake but don’t fret over his lack of sleep, fore he still had the fortune of physically holding his dreams in his arms. Although Yamato could no longer look at the face of his brother, he still could hold him in his arms, feel every breath he took, feel every beat of his heart. He could still smell him, the sweet applely scent of his hair, as well as a pleasant mix of vanilla, cologne and with a touch of sweat. He could still hear the soothing sound of him breathing, like small quiet waves softly crashing against the shore. As sleep began to take him again Yamato fought it, fore he knew that nothing would beat the feelings he had then, so he stayed awake, hoping that everyone would stay asleep just a little bit longer.
And so they did, it wasn’t until the late morning that Yamato heard rustling outside and the quiet sounds of the shower starting. After a few minutes he heard the sounds of someone awakening on the floor. He heard them stand up and take a few steps and pause. He then heard them continue their trip out of the room. Yamato then heard his brother’s breathing change, and felt him shift around. He then saw his brother turn around so he was once again facing his brother. As their eyes locked on each other, smiles formed on their faces.

Takeru let out a large yawn and stretched, “Good morning Onii-chan.”

Yamato stroked the back of Takeru’s head, “Good morning Takeru.”

The two brother’s laid in bed for a few moments just looking at each other. Each hoping that this wasn’t just a dream that they were going to awaken from. Eventually Yamato spoke, “We should go and make people breakfast.”
“Good idea, a Hungry Taichi is bad enough, but add a hungry Daisuke and you’re really asking for trouble.” Said Takeru, he then let out a quiet laugh, which Yamato joined in. The two brother’s then quietly got out of bed and changed, all without disturbing the young genius still asleep on the floor. The two brother’s walked into the kitchen and found that some of their friends we’re already awake.

“Yamato, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you’re out of coffee.” Said Jyou stirring a steaming mug.

“Yeah, Poor Jyou and I had to settle on a half a cup each.” Sora said.

“Don’t worry, I keep a secret stash.” Yamato then went to a cupboard, pushed aside a few items and pulled out a large can of creamed spinach. He then twisted the top to reveal that within was actually coffee grounds. After a few quiet cheers from the coffee drinkers, a fresh pot of coffee was put on.

“So what does everyone want for breakfast?” Said Yamato sitting down at the table.

“That would depend on what you have for food.” Koushiro said.

“Eggs.” Takeru said from the refrigerator.

“and bread…” Said Yamato.

“And eggs…” Takeru said again.

“…onions and peppers...” Continued Yamato from memory.

“…more eggs...”

“…milk…”

“…Look more eggs…”

“…cheese…”

“…You’d swear there was a brood of chickens running loose in the fridge.”

Sora laughed, “We get it Takeru, they have lots of eggs.”

“What’s with all the eggs?” asked Iori.

Yamato let out a slight sigh, “They were on sale, and it was Taichi’s turn for shopping.”

Hikari giggled “How many did he get?”

“About seven dozen. Thank god that’s all they had on the shelf or else we’d have more. However we’ve knocked it down to about five dozen over the past week” Said Yamato.

“I think Mom rubbed off on him more than he admit. That’s how she started all of her strange recipes you know. She would buy anything on sale, even if it the food wasn’t really appetizing. Then she’d get home and realize she had to make something with it. So she would just start mixing stuff together.” Said Hikari.

“Stop Hikari, you’re going to give my stomach nightmares.” Yamato groaned.

The group of friends quietly laughed before Koushiro spoke up, “Well with all the ingredients, I suggest we make omelets. Does that work for everyone?”

Everyone nodded their heads and then went about with various tasks; getting plates and silverware ready, cracking and whisking eggs, shredding cheese, dicing peppers and onions, and of course cooking the omelets themselves. Once the smell of food wafted into the living room its two remaining sleepers woke up, they quickly wiped the sleep from their eyes and made their way to the kitchen. It was then Iori’s and Jyou’s task to keep the two from snatching food. When the cooking was done, Hikari went to wake up Miyako, and Koushiro to awaken Ken. Once all the digidestined were awake the food was passed around, and quickly dispatched of. When breakfast was finished the fights over the small the shower began. It was during this time that Taichi pulled Yamato into his room to talk.

“So what went on last night Yamato? Why did you punch Yutaka? You didn’t go all psycho big brother on him did you?” asked Taichi, sitting down on his bed.

Yamato turned a small office chair and sat on in backwards. “It was misunderstanding.”

“What kind of misunderstanding?”

“I walked into my room and saw them on my bed wrapped around each other, so I broke them up and hit him.”

“Yep psycho big brother, I bet Takeru wasn’t too happy.” Said Taichi.

“It’s a little more complicated than that Taichi.” Yamato responded.

“How so?” asked Taichi.

“I did it more out of jealousy than protective big brother.” Answered Yamato.

Taichi cocked his head to the side, “Jealousy?”

“Yes Taichi, I was jealous.” Yamato paused. “And then I may have told Takeru something.”

“Something? Like what?” Taichi then cocked his head the other way, a grin on his face like he knew what it was already.

Yamato saw the grin, he knew Taichi had gathered what he had told Takeru. “I told him that, I loved him.”
Taichi’s grin turned into a large authentic smile. “Was Yutaka still there? What did Takeru say?”

“Yutaka was still there, in fact he was the one who made me say it, he already knew somehow. Then once he left, Takeru and I talked and worked things out.” Yamato answered.

“So are you two……together now?” asked Taichi leaning forward.

“I think it would be safe to say yes.” Yamato said.

Taichi stood up and walked over to Yamato with arms open, Yamato stood up. The two friends hugged each other, “Congratulations Yamato.”

“Thanks Taichi.” Said Yamato a smile appearing on his face.

They broke the hug and Taichi asked, “So are you going to let the others know?”

Yamato sighed the smile wiped from his face, “I don’t know Taichi. Takeru isn’t even out to everyone yet. I don’t even know what the hell I am, and I can only help but think about what the others will think about us being together.”

Taichi gave Yamato another hug, then looked at Yamato dead in the eyes. “And you’re sure you love him?”

“With all my heart and then some.” Answered Yamato looking right back.

“Then what does it matter?” responded Taichi. He then hugged Yamato one more time then left the room. Yamato nodded his head as a small smile reappeared on his face, he then left the room to join his friends.

Hours flew past as games were played and laugh inducing stories were told, and before Yamato knew it, it was time for him to leave to join his band to help them strike the stage from the previous night’s performance. Yamato told his friends goodbye and for them all to have a safe ride back to their homes. He then grabbed his keys and began his short trip to the theater.
