I do not own Fruits Basket, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Author's Note
Someone asked if Kyo was dead at the end.
No. Kyo doesn't die. None of the Jyuunishi die in either ending.
It's just does Akito die or does Tohru. One of them needs to die so that there's blood to sate the beast. I did also consider writing a Disney-ending where Hatori does a transfusion and neither of them dies, but I just couldn't make myself write it.
I would be interested in knowing which ending y'all like better, tho.
_____
Re-reading this story, I noticed that I didn't explain something and I'm wondering if anyone picked up on it. Shigure took Akito's virginity at a very young age. He also knew what was required to break the curse. My thought was that he was in love with Akito and didn't want her to have to die like that - didn't want to share her with anyone - so he took her virginity so that she would never be ABLE to satisfy the curse. Only later, when he realized she would still die did he seek out another method.
My thought is that he brought Tohru into the family in the hopes that she WOULD become the proxy. He would continually feel guilty about that and eventually give up hope.
But most likely, Akito wouldn't know that he'd done all this for her. Shigure might have suggested that perhaps Tohru would offer them a solution to the curse, but never have made it clear that he knew about the ritual.
Just my random thoughts.
