Chapter 12

The Hounds of Winter

By: Delilah deSora

Epilogue

“No!”

Shido woke with a splitting headache and a racing heart. Fear gripped him mercilessly and he peered about frantically. Dark walls met his gaze and he realized he was safely home and not in the glass garden. With a groan fell back onto the bed, turning on his side to bury his face against his mate’s back. Golden eyes opened and he smiled. Raising up onto his elbows he pressed his lips against his mate’s.

He had realized something that night in the garden nearly a year ago.

Gaven’s blade had been his freedom but Cain was his heart.

He had tried to explain that to his fledge-mate but Gaven had only smiled and silenced him with a kiss.

"You love him. That is all I need to know."

Soryo had looked pained at his decision but Gaven had understood. In the end it had not been a trade he had been willing to make. He wasn’t ready to give up on his mate. There was so much for him to relearn, to rediscover. His mind was still sorting itself out from Yukami’s meddling but each day brought new revelations. For the first time in over a century he was seeing with his own eyes, thinking with his own mind.

There were still things he did not approve of but the touch of his mate and the presence of his own kind no longer sickened him. His mind was no longer tormented by the screams of a thousand voices. Cain’s touch no longer repulsed him. Ancient words no longer stalled on his tongue.

He smiled and allowed Cain to pull his down, settling his head on his mate’s broad chest. Outside the sun shone brightly, weighing heavily on his mind. He still woke in the middle of the day but they were to nightmares of his own making. Yukami had taken something important from him but Shido knew it would come back to him in this land of his birth.

The Wild Hunt had fled at their master's death. The Japanese Regional Court had shut themselves off from the rest of the world. Gaven and Soryo were gone, off to start their own court. Cain had let them go without a fight and though Shido found the castle lonelier for their loss he was glad to see the break go so well. Riho had chosen to stay among the vampires of Japan, freeing him to return to his home. Yayoi had promised to take care of Guni and Shido had closed the door on his life among the mortals. At least for a little while. He knew he wouldn’t be able to stay cooped up for long but when he left it would no longer be to run as far and as fast as he could. It would be when he wished and where he wished.

Ah but that was far in the future. Right now he had everything he needed.

He tightened his arms about his mate’s waist. “Alaire ve mizza'dyo jurai.” He whispered.

You hold my heart.

A hand touched his hair as his mate laughed softly at having the dominant mate’s words stolen from him. “Laithe ve palalio'dyo jurai.” Cain replied, his deep voice turning the words into poetry.

You are my life.

Shido smiled happily as sleep stole over him.

Never had words been so true.
