Starfall

Travels of a Martial artist
Part 7: Starfall

As Ukyo walked alongside Ranma and Shampoo, she couldn’t help but mentally caress the links she had recently formed with them.

When Ranma and Shampoo had approached her after the bath incident, one with an expression of guilt and the other radiating contentment, she had been a bit on edge. She knew that they had shared each others comforts, and that didn’t bother her as she had come to love the former Amazon in the short week of her recovery.

It was Ranma’s inability to meet her eyes that put up her guard.

Something had happened to them. Something more than just the frantic love making she had heard throughout the apartment.

---

“Ukyo, we need to talk,” Ranma said as Shampoo knelt and took her left hand into her own.

The formal tone in Ranma’s voice did nothing to alleviate the rising tension in her body.

“Me and Shampoo, we… Well, actually I’m not sure what happened. Maybe I better let her explain.”

Ukyo’s eyes sought the lavender haired woman’s immediately. The contentment in them put her a bit more at ease, though she braced herself for the worst.

"Shampoo and Ranma is bonded." Shampoo’s soft fingers over her lips halted Ukyo’s initial outburst. “Is spiritual bond joining two hearts as one. Shampoo sorry she not let Ukyo be first join with Ranma, but Shampoo’s heart too too sorrowful. Shampoo felt must cling to happiness. Was stupid thing, but Shampoo no regrets. Shampoo know Ranma loves Shampoo just as much as loves Ukyo. Makes Shampoo love Ukyo just as much. Shampoo help to bond Ranma with Ukyo, and maybe…”

Shampoo’s eyes dropped to the floor; her beautiful features all at once unsure and almost frightened.

“Maybe Ukyo sometime love Shampoo too. Maybe let be bonded to Shampoo.”

Ukyo looked between the two of them, and gasped with shock when she finally focused on her fiance.

“Ran-chan…. You… You’re…” she gasped unsure of how to process the information.

She had never before seen him cry as a man. Ranma himself was startled to feel the moisture running down his cheeks.

“I think it’s the bond. I can feel her. Somewhere in the back of my mind I know the pain her heart feels, but I also know that she loves you just as much as she loves me. As much as I love the both of you. She’s sincere U-chan.”

Ukyo couldn’t argue with his tears. cupping Shampoo’s cheek with her free hand, Ukyo brought the somber girl’s eyes up to meet her own.

“It’s okay Shampoo. I already told you we won’t leave you alone. The whole spirit bond thing just caught me by surprise. So, how does this bond work?”

---

Ukyo smiled as the memory flitted through her mind. Her lovers looked her way as they felt the tickle of her amusement through their linked spirits.

A flash of movement in the sky caught her attention. Throwing up a quick glance, she expected a local bird or a plane. What she was not expecting was a flaming sphere hurtling towards the ground at startling speeds.

Following her surprised gaze, her companions twirled around just in time to see the meteor slam into the earth. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and the pillar of smoke that twisted and curled into the sky looked to be only a hundred kilometers or so away.

Ukyo felt a twisting sense of dread from the pigtailed youth beside her.

“U-chan… how far are we from graviton city?” he asked haltingly.

“It’s only… oh my god…” She let the words die as the gravity of the situation hit her.

Without another word the trio took of at a dead run, hoping they had misjudged their position.

Their hopes were in vain. Everything within 50 kilometers from the impact site was leveled. All around them was the wreckage of a vast city strewn about like a child’s toy blocks.

Steeling themselves against the devastation, they split up and began searching for any survivors.

The fruitless search lasted for hours, and Ukyo was quickly losing heart for the task.

She felt Shampoo’s spirit spark with elation, and she quickly set off letting the link guide her to her lover.

Moving quickly she found Shampoo with an infant no more than a few months old. Ranma arrived a moment later.

“She no hurt,” the Amazon told them as Ukyo slumped to the ground in relief. “She sleep deep, but no is hurt.”

“That’s good to hear,” Ranma breathed. “I saw some trucks and helicopters coming in fast from the north while I was searching. They should be here in a few minutes. Hopefully they’ll be able to find out if she has any family that wasn’t in the city.”

True to his word, the air was soon filled with the buzz of whirling propellers. Military, rescue, and even a few news choppers were circling overhead.

They handed the infant to a paramedic team and made to leave when they were stopped by an assertive man with a microphone accompanied by a cameraman.

“Excuse me. I’m Ky Hakubi from Channel 6 Action News. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?” the reporter asked quickly.

“I uh-’ Ranma started, flustered by the cameraman invading his personal space.

“What is your name young man?” the reporter asked, cutting Ranma off.

“Uh, Ranma…”

“And where did you find the infant girl, who is quite possibly the only other survivor of this tragedy?”

“I didn’t-”

“So it was one of you ladies that found her? And what are your names?”

Ukyo and Shampoo shared a look before replying.

“And where did you find the girl?”

“Shampoo look under big metal door.”

The reporter followed her gesture and saw the door in question. The trio of martial artists were quickly forgotten as he turned quickly to his cameraman.

“In a new development, it seems there is possible alien involvement in this disaster. Can this be an attack from beyond the stars, or merely a friendly landing gone horribly awry? We will report again as new information develops. This is Ky Hakubi signing out.”

Making use of the news crew’s keen interest in the hatch Shampoo had extracted the girl from, the trio made their escape. A few minutes later and they were several miles from the stench of death, destruction, and pushy reporters.

Meanwhile, in Nerima…

“I should have guessed that foul sorcerer was behind this blatant attack!”

Kuno Tatewaki, the self titled Blue thunder, turned off his television in disgust and rage.

"First the demon kidnaps my fair pigtailed goddess and flees from my righteous blade, but now he has ravaged and entire city to spite me! I, the noble heir of house Kuno shall not stand for this insult! Sasuke!!!"

Obeying his master's summons, the unappreciated ninja servant of the Kuno clan knelt at the deluded youths knees.

"You called master?"

"Sasuke, that vile practitioner of the dark arts has made a blatant challenge against me. He has insulted the mighty blade of House Kuno with this unholy attack on Graviton City. I must answer this destruction with swift and mighty retribution. go forth mine servant. Search the wastes of that once fair city and pick up Saotome's trail. I shall arrive in two days time, for I must pray and meditate to prepare myself for this final confrontation. Saotome shall not live out the week."
