Eyes opened, heart scared
Chapter Fourteen
Chief Kosaku eyed the young hunter in front of him, as she hurriedly explained what she had figured out, with the help of Karasuma who explained what she had done too.
The chief listened, keeping himself quiet through the girls auctioneer style of explanation.
Are you both sure of this? Asked the small balding man, interrupting not very politely.
I am. Robin said.
I really am sure of this, Sir. Karasuma said.
Why do you think I would be here, instead of being in my hospital bed like I should be. Pointed out the young hunter, trying to make her point.
The man crossed his arms, and looked right at the two young women who stood before him.
I dont want to call of the hunt, unless you are actually that sure of your findings. He said slowly. I have to have the truth, and all of it to present to the hierarchy of both the STN and to SOLOMON.
Yes we are sure, sir. Restated Robin with every ounce of conviction in her body. I swear it.
How sure?
Robin took a deep breath, and nodded, her eyes locked right on to her bosses eyes.
Like Amon would say... Fucking sure! She said bluntly, flinching with her need for the use of the bad word.
The chiefs eyebrows went up at the girls firmness. He had never heard the young girl swear at any time, only heck or something along that more sanitized route. He just knew in his heart, that he could not dismiss from the girl. He nodded and picked up the phone.
You two get Michael to stop the hunt while I am on the phone to explain this to my bosses.
Already got them on the communications channel. Yelled the hacker lad very loudly from his terminal, obviously he had been listening in to the entire proceedings from his spot at the computer.
Robin took a long sigh in. She had gotten the hunt stopped, and people knew just what had happened. Now comes the harder part. To find her husband and to get this fake out in the open. The question was how.
Robin went and sat down at her desk area, her fatigue making it hard to stand any longer. All of this was draining her, but for the sake of her child, she needed to keep going, any way possible.
Robin just sat at her desk, oblivious of anyone around her, as her mind was racing to find a plan of action. As she thought on it, she prayed for some divine intervention.
Miho came over and put her hand on the young girls shoulder, effectively breaking her out of her thoughts and prayers.
I have a idea.
An idea? Said the girl, smiling as the ladys statement brought her a little hope.
Put in the description of those two men into out data banks and just see what might pop right out. Karasuma said, putting it simply, as she usually did.
Robin took out a pen, and wrote the descriptions of the two men, while she could hear Michael talking on trying to hack in to the hospitals security system for pictures that might have been captured by their cameras. She giggled, as the hacker kid was ahead of her... again, she thought to herself.
With in a half an hour, Michael had a few photos up on the screen, matching up what Robin had wrote down.
Are any of these the ones you saw? He asked of the young hunter, who was looking over his arm.
Number three on the top row are the ones. She said, her voice ringing assured. I dont ever forget a face.
That I already know about you... Chuckled Michael.
The youth punched it in, and the computer started to hum with power.
Facial recognition software... It will match these two up if they are anywhere in the system. He said confidently. This might take awhile though...I am putting through every police, SOLOMON and STN system I can come up with.
Robin nodded, then spotted a picture of Amon among the pictures that were in another window of the monitor. The time stamp was around just after the time she had gone to see him, or so she thought was him.
There is a picture of Amon. She said, reaching out to the screen and pointing it out. Hes sneaking out the stairs there. Look at the time, that is around the time just after he attacked me. She said to the boy. Is there a camera situated in there?
The lads fingers flew across the keys, as he checked out the young hunters query, knowing full well what she was up to.
There is a hidden camera is in that stairwell it seems.... He muttered, his fingers working the cyber magic. I have got this far... should be a breeze from here to tap into that, thanks to it al being cyberized.
Two photos came up on the screen, time stamped less than a few seconds apart. One was Amon stepping down the stairs, then the picture of a dark haired man with a severely poked marked complexion wearing a outfit exactly like the first one of Amon. Both were in the exact position of walking down the stairs. The two, despite the different faces, were the same person.
Michael snuffed, as he saw the transformation between the two. The man that attacked Robin was not Amon... the pictures backed that all up.
That proved it... that was not Amon.. Michael said with a sense of accomplishment. This man is an illusion craft user... possibly a multi craft user.
The lad shot the second picture through to the databanks with a deft keystroke.
Lets see who this mother fucker is. Said Michael, swearing under his breath..
Both Michael and Robin sat back and waited. It would take time to get a hit, if there was one. Each one did not speak a word, as the waited to see if they could come up with anything on the three pictures that were for the data banks.
Less than ten minutes passed, and the computer registered the three hits. The words on the screen were three exact matches. Robin and Michael were joyed at this, and leaned in to check it all out.
The other STN members, who had ben hanging around for the results, closed in all around the hacker kid and the young hunter. Even the Chief had came over after hearing what they were up to, for the information.
Holy shit!! Gasped Michael, as he looked at the return of information.
The chief took a closer look at it, and stood up.
These men are all with the Syndicate. He said.
The two men that were in Amons room are Tochi and Ishai Tomoyki, major enforcers with the mob. Michael read out, not waiting for the chief to do so. The man that can change form is simply called Chamaeleon, and is a distant relative of the witch we have been searching for called Shadowmark.
That means that we might have been set up from the start of the case with Shadowmark? Asked Robin, as pieces fell together.
It appears that way, Robin. Said the chief, looking at the evidence that was right there. Everyone got played...and Amon has become a pawn in it all.
Robin leaned in and looked at the three. She felt mad, as she knew something happened to her husband.
Any Idea just where Amon might be.
With the syndicate, anything is possible. Said Michael, his fingers starting the clack the keyboard once again.. I will try and check public records to see if they own any buildings, or are affiliated with someone outside the Mob.
The chief just nodded, and coughed, getting peoples attention.
I will call on the police, and see if their anti-mob division could help us out, and I will have our SOLOMON informants also come clean too.. The chief said, as she seemed to have picked up what he needed to do.
The chief hurried away to his desk, his personal assistant right behind him as she already had a cell phone attached to one ear.
Robin just sat down and looked at the hacker lad with a long look. The lad just knew what she was thinking, and give a calming smile to the lass.
We will have to work hard and fast on this... we all will work hard to find Amon.
Robin nodded, acknowledging the youths word, but her mind was also going into bad directions.
Was he alive or dead, was the main thought. She did not know if her husband was even alive. She prayed for the strength to find him, but her heart sank, knowing the Japanese mob was capable of anything.
Miho knelt beside the girl and looked at her. The woman could see the worry that rose in the young ones heart.
We will all work hard to find him. She said, softly. We will find your babys father.
There is a chance that he would be... dead... She said shakily, admitting the fact to herself.
This is Amon we are talking about. Miho said with confidence. If anyone can survive even with the Mob having him, it would be him.
Miho just stood back up and walked off. Robin just sat there, contemplating everything. She knew the lady was right, Amon was that type of man. The bad thing about it was he was just that, a man. She closed her eyes and hoped that he would be alive.
She put her hand on her growing stomach, feeling the little movements of the new person that was growing in her. She made a promise to her unborn child right then and there. She would find Amon- alive or dead. Either way, her baby deserved to know his or her father- but she also hoped that it would be alive, rather than dead.
She took a dep breath of resolve, and then stood up, anxious to see what she could do to help in the search for the missing Hunter. She did not just want to sit back and wait. She couldnt.
