BlackDesert, no I got over myself and decided to go on. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, truly. I like the pairing too, although I can also handle IxA and SxP. And really, I think Walter could stand some action, too, lol.

Matoska, thanks for the review. I realize Alucard isn't anime canon, but this is sort of what I wanted to explore about him. If he's really Viovode Dracula, he had some passion in him. In researching him historically, I discovered quite a few interesting things about his reported personality. Too, things evolve or they die. He seems very adaptable to me.
You will see as you read the reason he's a bit warmer with Seras.
I know the site has some loading issues, but I didn't consider that when I wrote my scathing diatribe for chapter 12. I have anon reviews enabled, so maybe that will help. I don't expect people to rush to review, just wanted a little feedback on the good and bad. Honestly, I can't see how every chapter would even rate a review, because I think my writing must really suck at times.
Thanks for letting me know what you think. I value that a lot, believe me.

“So, what’s the deal with the freaks here, master?” I asked. We stood to the side of a crowded, noisy street. This section had the medieval theme down pat. It smelled like hay, smoking meat, unwashed bodies and cheap grease. “Why hasn’t Hellsing evacuated the populace?”

“The idea here is stealth. We could cause a tremendous riot trying to evacuate this place, and Sir Integra is concerned about popular opinion on her family’s organization.” He started to put on his sunglasses, but I snatched them.

“Pirates don’t wear sunglasses,” I said smugly. “Especially at night.”

He looked down at me, the faintest hint of a smile on his lips. “You got those out of my hand, girl,” he murmured. “Very good.” Casually, he formed another pair and slid them on his face. “And, to your first question, the freaks are here because humans are easy prey when they’re jammed in together like this. With the Halloween theme, people will assume they’re seeing part of an act. The whole point of the holiday is to be frightened.”

“Cunning,” I grudgingly admitted, putting the stolen glasses on my face. The reddish lenses made everything sharper, and I already had perfect, vampiric vision.

How master formed things out of nothing, I didn’t know. I had a feeling if I asked I wouldn’t get a proper answer.

“Now we both look like porn stars on break,” he observed, showing fangs as he grinned. “If you had a smoke it would look very casual.”

“You’re distracting me. I want to know who set these freaks.”

“The same people who set the ghouls in Wiltshire. A new faction, mostly skinheads.”

“Skinheads? As in Nazi skinheads?” Would we never be rid of Nazis?

“Most likely.” Alucard pulled me closer to his body, giving us the appearance of a couple. “I failed to keep Integra from getting wind of this outbreak. She and Walter have an appalling dedication to duty. I’ll have to actually take information back to her this time.”

I looked up, wishing I could see his eyes. Still, he had a handsome face; I contented myself with that.

A group of drunken witches staggered close to us. One of them began talking about my master’s arse. He’d taken his coat off and exposed his leather-covered behind to the masses. I felt like slapping the woman. But, if I did, I’d have green greasepaint and fake warts stuck to me.

“Looking good, pirate boy!”

“I feel like frigging in the rigging, sailor!”

“You can batten down our hatches any time you want, cutie!”

“Back off!” I snarled. “Master, just say the word-.”

“They’re harmless,” he said, chuckling a little. “Be good unless they start touching.”

I realized I acted as possessive as he did, and it startled me. I didn’t consider master my property, did I?

“Bring your little booty-licious girlfriend,” a woman said, almost staggering into a lamp post. “We like pussy, too!”

“Disgusting.” I shivered. “They should thank God they’re drunk and I can’t eat them.”

“I think eating is what they had in mind,” Alucard replied, grinning. “Won’t you thrill me with a private show?”

“You’re as nasty as they are.”

“Years of practice.” He grabbed me, as he was wont to do, and pulled me toward the pirate ship attraction. “Come along, Seras. We’ll attract less attention among other, so-called pirates.”

“Won’t the real staff wonder about us?”

“Chances are slim. They’ll either conclude we’re extras hired for the season, or enthusiastic costume wearers. You’ll notice no one is wearing an Alton Towers badge; a dangerous concession to the holiday.”

Oh, my master was smart, and he thought like a predator at all times.

After about an hour of milling about near the ship, we’d had our pictures taken about seven times. I worried about that. Sir Hellsing wouldn’t like us being photographed.

“Don’t worry. The pictures will come out blurry. I’m focusing on that.”

I had my shields down again, damn it.

“Any leads yet, master?”

“No. I think you’re a good indicator of something being wrong. I’m waiting for you to sniff out the freaks.” He grinned at me. “I can rely on your intuition.”

Flattered, I tried not to smile too broadly. “Don’t you have intuition for these things too, master?”

“Yes, but mine is more attuned to larger, darker enemies, opponents similar to myself. Your intuition is good for this sort of work because you’re clinging onto some of your humanity, as are new freaks and new ghouls.” Alucard obliged a little girl who wanted to take his picture, posing nicely.

Did you blur that little girl’s camera? I asked, a little warmed by how my master treated her.

“No.” He smirked. If the young and innocent want a picture of the devil, who am I to deny them?

Not bad for a man who fed babies to his concubines. I took my glasses off and smiled at him.

At hour three, I felt a prickle of wrongness. Slowly, I scanned the crowd.

There.

A man dressed like a jester moved in and out of a group of people, juggling brightly colored balls while teasing the populace.

“Him?” Alucard draped himself over my shoulders from behind, pretending at a lover’s embrace.

“Yeah. He’s just off. I can smell the predator in him.” I focused totally upon the man, my vision telescoping. He had an erratic, barely-there heartbeat, and his blood smelled stale.

“Shall we follow?” Alucard linked his arm with mine and led me through the throng.

If the vampire didn’t sense our danger, a few humans did. Men took one look at my companion and thought twice about approaching me. Their eyes would go over my barely concealed breasts, travel to my hips, then rest on Alucard and snap to the opposite direction.

He did seem menacing. He moved with confidence, graceful as smoke. He stood well over the height of most men, too.

My master.

“I see a lot of shrubbery ahead,” Alucard murmured. “He’s heading for the lawn maze. Have you ever been inside of one?”

“No.” I didn’t even know what that might be.

“Well, this one is special, police girl. It’s very large, and permanent. The shrubs are grown around concrete slabs. One cannot cheat in trying to find their way out.” He grinned down at me. “Unless they’re like us, of course.”

Our quarry ducked into a greenery alcove. Alucard stopped us. “Give him a moment. Perhaps he’ll lead us to his freak-chip friends.”

“I won’t lose him,” I vowed, feeling the thrill of hunting in my veins.

“I know you won’t.” He tapped my sword hilt. “Unclasp it. Be ready.”

We edged around to one side. “Ordinarily, I’d set you loose on this trash from the other side, meeting you in the middle,” he said. “However, I want to watch you slice and dice.”

He and I made our way inside the maze. I found the poorly lit foliage a bit disorienting, so I tried the red lens glasses again. To my relief, they helped cut down the distracting play of fluorescent on shadow. No wonder master wore them. They helped deal with too-good eyesight.

No sooner did we pass the second flag marker, a booming voice on a loudspeaker made us halt. “Everyone participating in the zombie hunt, now enter the maze! Remember, no one is in actual danger! If a zombie tags you, you’re out of the contest. The first one to the center of the maze gets a free pass to Alton Towers for one year!”

Master and I looked at each other.

“Shit,” he said, succinctly.
