Chapter Seventeen: Feeling the Loss of the Mare
\"How could this have happened?\" Yuki was in shock, and I was doing my best to just keep him warm. Rin had always been depressed, and the last few years had not been easy on her, but this was just not expected. \"She was fine, we took Kato to see her just last month, and she even gave the boys a ride, it was just last month!\"
\"Yuki, calm down. Ha-san when did she . . . ?\" I couldn\'t even bring myself to voice the question.
\"Last week, while you were gone. I think she planned it that way. While Kato and you were out of the country.\" Hatori had squatted down in front of Yuki as he said the next. \"She went fast, and in her sleep. It was painless, and easy. There was a note for you. And one for Haru. I have it here.\" He reached into his pocket and brought out the sealed envelope, so much like one we had received only a few years ago before we became the parents of Rin\'s only child. Yuki numbly took the envelope from Hatori and stared at him. \"I think she anticipated something we all are now concerned with. It was in Haru\'s note also.\"
Yuki opened the envelope and read the enclosed letter. He said nothing, just read and let the letter drop to his lap. I was concerned by the look on my lover\'s face. \"What is it? Yukito?\" He lifted the sheet and handed it to me.
Dearest Yuki,
Don\'t hate me for my cowardess, but I couldn\'t go on, if only . . . no more. Kiss Kato for me everyday, and tell him I\'m sorry. I leave you with a terrible responsibility, and I bet you haven\'t even thought about it yet. You must realize you and Kyo are the best choice, and that Tohru couldn\'t manage, I think she can be of big help though, she always has been. Haru will understand, and so will all the others, but you are the only one who could truly feel my pain, so I give you this, be there for the new me, or help where you can. I leave the horse in your care.

\"The \'new me\'? Hatori, she want us to . . . ?\" Again, I couldn\'t even voice it. Hatori nodded. I reached out and held Yuki tightly, as he began to sob uncontrolably. I could only sit there and pet him as he released the pain, fear and anger he felt, I knew this as it was what I felt, too. \"Hey, are you okay now?\" I asked as he began to regain his composure. \"What do you think? I am here, whatever happens, I am not going anywhere.\"
\"Kyo? Oh Stray, she is right. Isn\'t she? We have to do this, there isn\'t anyone else. But, how?\" at this he looked up at Hatori. Not for first time in my life, I was hoping that my cousin had all the answers. He sat in the chair across from us, I reached to the end table and pulled out a tissue to hand to Yuki so he could blow his nose.
\"We have made an announcement, the entire family is currently practicing birth control. No children are expected and none should be conceived, save one. We have everything we need, except your permission and the mother\'s. You will have to talk to her. And probably tell her about Yuuhi. She would be the bearer of two of the Juunishi, as was your own mother, Yuki.\" We had known since Tsuki\'s birth that Ansa could bear no further children, so the only way to bring forthe the new horse, would be Sohma, Saki (Hana) Yuki\'s wife. She only knew at this time that for reasons of another nature, she and Ansa had married Yuki and I, but we never lived together and had even rarely visited, they had never met the children. This was going to be tricky. \"will you agree, if you can convince the mother?\" Yuki nodded. I held him close again as he clung to me. Hatori left me with something to help Yuki sleep, then after visiting with the boys, he left. I made tea and took the pills to Yuki, he took them mechanically and drank the tea slowly. Staring at the letter the entire time.
\"Hey, Yukito, what\'s going through your head now?\" I tried to ease the tension, in the room and in my love.
\"Aw, Kyonkicchou, I was just thinking, and hating myself for it. . . . . I hope it\'s a girl.\" And having said it, he turned dazzling purple orbs my way. My mind filled with the memories of small children, diapers and cribs. I pictured us up long hours and bottles and pacifiers. Then, I remembered watching Yuki, holding a small baby, and the happy look on his face when that same child reached up around a bottle to pull at his hair, and the noises of babyhood filled my mind. I smilled at Yuki, and said the only thing I could.
\"Me, too.\"
A girl was something we had never dared hope for, but a girl with the curse of the horse. Now, we could dream. Kato and Tsuki would have to be careful, but they knew about the curse through us and Yuuhi, so now to have a sister, I was beginning to get excited.
