Broken Wings

Disclaimer: I don't own Nightwalker. Yet.

Warnings: Get ready for it... Yes, this is Uke-Cain yaoi. Yep, you read that right, Uke-Cain. I know, I know. *Rolls eyes* I'm in a weird mood, all right? OOC, AU [um, sort of...], A little bad language, Angst, Fluff [maybe]... Making up new vampire rules...

Author: Koneko Shido

A/N: *Whimper* Hey, I thought I'd get on with writing the second part of this, seeing as I'm in the mood for some angst and all. I'm selling most of my Dragonball Z collection tomorrow to fund my current Rurouni Kenshin obsession. No, you aren't allowed to laugh at me for liking Dragonball Z! That was the first anime show I ever saw, and it sucked me in! But, I guess I grew out of it and moved on to other anime, so I'm selling my likkle collection to some kid who probably won't take care of it, and will lose all my kawaii little action figures... they'll probably end up as dog chew-toys. *cringe* It's scary how much that bothers me. Anyway, back to the plot of this fic, if you can really call it a plot... Basically I know where the fic is gonna end up, I just don't know how it's going to get there. Good, huh? And don't flame me unless you have a really good reason, 'cause flamers piss me off and I usually get my revenge one way or another. *evil grin*
About the song: From the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, dunno who sings it or what it's called.

Eternal Darkness 2 - Broken Wings

//I watched you change,
To fly,
I looked away,
You were on fire...//

Shido felt his blood run cold at the girl's words and stared at her, speechless, as she continued.
"You see, my dear young vampire, I've been watching you for quite a while now, and your mate here. There really isn't much else to do, when you have the body of a child, as I do. Tell me something, if you will. Before you knew that he was...ill, you felt his pain, didn't you?" The girl asked, vanishing again and reappearing in the armchair.
"Yes, but what does that have to do with-"
"Patience, my young vampire. Do you know why you felt his pain? Because you are a mated pair, of course! And do you know, in our kind, what that truly means?" The girl asked, smiling sweetly.
"Truly means? I-I...I...ido ido trailed off, looking down at Cain. He had assumed that it just meant they were lovers, b.
".
"It means that you have given a part of your soul to him, and he has given the same to you. That is why he is dying." The girl explained. "This piece of the soul that is given away is very important, it is what humans would call your heart. See? He has given his heart to you, and you have given yours to him. How romantic! Of course you know the old legends about killing vampires, that you must pierce their heart? Those legends are rooted in the truth. It is not the physical heart that must be destroyed to kill a vampire, though. Do you understand?" She asked.
"Not...really." Shido said quietly, trying to absorb everything the girl was telling him.
"Then let me put it simply, my dear. He has a piece of your soul, your heart. He has taken good care of it over the centuries, never denying that he loved you and waiting patiently for the day you would return to him. How nice for you. So you have remained whole, knowing in your deepest soul that someone loves you enough to follow you around the world and tolerate all your eccentricities, you obsession with humans and such things. But, Shido, you also hold a part of Cain's soul within you. Perhaps you have felt it recently, fading away? This is because as he has loved you, you have shunned him. You have ignored the bond between you, fought against him, told him that you hate him and will never return to him. And now, poor Cain is giving up. He must be tired; he has chased you for so long. Do not worry yourself, though, because when he dies the part of you that he holds will return to you and you can find yourself a new mate to give it to. I feel rather sorry for Cain, but I suspect he knew that this would happen all along. Were it me, I would have taken back my heart and left you to the humans, but Cain cannot break the bond you share because he loves you too much. How sad! Still, I'm sure your new child Riho will be pleased to find out that you have finally managed to destroy your master." The little girl giggled, getting up from the comfy chair.
"That... That can't be true!" Shido gasped, staring at her in shock.
"Oh but it is, my handsome young Shido. Poor Cain has finally accepted that you don't love him, and now he's dying a very slow and painful death because of you. What a shame; he had such potential!" She laughed, enjoying the horror in Shido's sea green eyes.
"How can I save him?" Shido finally whispered, his voice breaking a little.
"How do you think? Although it probably won't work, convincing him that you love him may help. Of course, that will only work if you really *do* love him, and I doubt he'll believe you in any case. Good luck, I do hope it goes well! I really must be going, I'm sure you have a lot to think about, and your mate is about to wake up. Besides, I have places to be and people to kill, farewell!" The little girl waved cheerfully to him and vhed hed again, her eerie laugh echoing behind her long after she'd disappeared.

//I watched a change,
In you,
It's like you never had wings,
Now you feel so alive,
I watched you change...//

Shido stood frozen for a moment, her words running again through his mind. Then he looked down at Cain, whose eyelashes fluttered as he began to wake, his lips parted to take in a soft, shaking breath.
Shido knelt beside him and waited for his sire to open his eyes, dreading what he would see in them.

//I took you home,
Set you on the glass,
I pulled off your wings,
Then I laughed...//

Cain groaned and opened his amber eyes, moving them immediately away from Shido, who was knelt beside the couch. Instead Cain slowly took in his surroundings, the dimly lit office with its large, old desk and crooked blinds, smelling of dust and coffee. This was the last place he wanted to be, but he had no strength left to try and rise. He couldn't bear to look at Shido, who was watching him with a worried expression on his face, so he silently turned his head away and closed his eyes.
He hadn't meant to collapse before Shido, but that moment in the church when he'd looked into his beautiful child's eyes had made everything holding him up fall away like the trapdoor beneath a hanged man. He let out a shaking breath, flinching as he felt Shido's cool fingers brush his cheek gently. The blonde vampire felt as though his soul were made from sand, and it was slowly trickling away into nothing. Everything was fading, so slowly, his thoughts, his memories...his heart...
"Cain..." Shido said softly, drawing his hand back when the dying vampire flinched at his touch.
"Why did you bring me to this place? I do not wish to be amongst humans." Cain murmured weakly, opening his amber eyes again and staring tiredly at the stitching in the leather of the couch.
"Did you expect me to just leave you?" Shido asked, frowning at the fact that Cain would not look at him. Cain's eyes faded from the yellow of a vampire to crimson, the colour his eyes had been as a human.
"Yes." The older vampire whispered. Shido looked down guiltily at that. Leaving him was all he'd ever done to Cain.
"Why are you doing this, Cain?" The lavender haired vampire asked quietly.
"Creative suicide, perhaps. But you know that I cannot stop it, should you not be celebrating?" Cain smiled bitterly, though there was no cruel tone to his voice, only deep weariness.
"No! You don't understand! I-I don't want you to die, not like this!" Shido pleaded, leaning over Cain a little, touching his arm.
"How often your mind changes, Shido." Cain whispered, his voice cracking a little on Shido's name. "You are so like a human, without their weaknesses to fail you. So beautiful..." Cain breathed wearily, finally looking up at Shido. The younger vampire looked into his mate's dying, blood red eyes, silently pleading him not to leave.
"I need you." Shido said quietly, honestly. Cain just gave a weak smile, closing his eyes.
"You need a mate to stand beside you through the centuries, to remain untouched by time as the world changes around you. This is why I gave you the girl. She loves you; she will stay with you when I am gone. Shido... So innocent, but naïve. Sometimes you do not see that which is laid bare before your eyes. I knew, when I gave her to you, that someday this would happen to me. I could not leave you, knowing that you would be alone amongst the humans, but you could not see what your child wanted of you." Cain gave a shuddering breath, biting back a moan of pain to continue. "I had to show you that she would leave if you did not give her what she needed. I sent you an illusion to teach you not to make the same mistakes as I. It pleases me that you showed her the affection she desired. She will stay with you now and when I am gone you may take her as your mate." Cain whispered.
"But... I thought..." Shido trailed off, horrified as he realized that everything Cain had done had been for him. And in return he had only hurt Cain more.
Cain could feel everything he was fading away like dust in the wind. He remembered that last time he'd seen Shido, checking to see how the girl had turned out, if she would be a suitable mate for Shido. And then he'd kissed Shido one, last time, unable to resist, needing some small way to say goodbye. He hadn't reallyecteected Shido to come to the church he'd chosen to die in, but he'd asked God anyway. It was his unbearable longing for Shido's beautiful face to be the last thing he ever saw that had driven him to his knees before the cross.

//I watched a change,
In you,
It's like you never had wings,
Now you feel so alive,
I watched you change,
It's like you never had wings...//

"I won't let you die!" Shido said suddenly, a passionate spark in his eyes.
"Do not distress yourself over that which you cannot change, Shido." Cain murmured, but the younger vampire just growled.
"I *will* change it!" Shido snarled, getting up and moving into the tiny kitchen, crashing about for a few moments before coming back to kneel beside Cain, folding a damp cloth and placing it on the older vampire's forehead.
"Ahh... Shido, there is nothing you can do," Cain whispered, but Shido ignored him, holding his wrist over the glass he'd fetched from the kitchen and slitting it open with his nail.
The glass quickly filled with Shido's blood and the violet-haired vampire licked the wound closed, watching it begin to heal slowly.
"Drink this." Shido demanded, helping Cain to sit up and thrusting the glass into his hands.
Shido..." Cain began, sighing softly.
"Drink it!" Shido almost yelled, determined not to let Cain die. Determined to prove that he cared.
"If it means so much to you..." Cain said quietly, raising the glass weakly to his pale lips.
"It does." Shido replied, getting up again to go to the kitchen for another cloth. As he was entering the small room the sound of breaking glass yanked him back into the office and he rushed over to find that Cain had passed out again, his head falling back and the glass of blood slipping from his elegant fingers to smash on the floor.
Seeing Cain like this hurt more than Shido could ever have imagined. The thought of the golden haired vampire not being there for him, watching him from the shadows like some dark guardian angel was almost enough to bring Shido to his knees. He *was* going to find a way to make Cain see. To show him that he really had just been a spoilt child after all, that he hadn't known how everything he'd done had affected Cain. To show Cain that he didn't *want* Riho. He wanted his mate.

//I look at the cross,
Then I look away,
Give you the gun,
Blow me away...

I watched a change,
In you,
It's like you never had wings,
Now you feel so alive,
I watched you change...
Now you feel alive,
You feel alive,
You feel alive,
I watched you change,
It's like you never had wings,
You change...//

Short chapter! Sorry! About Cain's eyes... In the first video they were red, then they changed to yellow (also his entire character design changed, but that's not the point...). Y'know how Shido's eyes are green/blue in his human form, and yellow when he's going vampire? Well, I decided that Cain should have red eyes in his human form. Because he looks good with red eyes. Argh... I've screwed up his character so much! But I really like him, and I wanted to write about him for once. I'm so crap at writing romantic stuff... It always ends up sounding like some low-budget, badly written soap opera, and I tend to think 'right, this is getting too mushy, let's put some death in there!'
Aww, well. It's written, there isn't much point worrying about it now, is there? Review and tell me what you think! Did I make any stupid mistakes? I usually do.

Plugging time!
Click on my name and go to my personal profile, and read one of my fics called 'Bruises.' It's a Soul Reaver fic, my first game fic, and I need lots of support! Plus, I actually managed to write a half-decent lemon for once! Kain and Raziel having sex on the throne of Nosgoth... I just couldn't resist writing it! I have such a sick mind... Anyway, go read it if you have a spare ten minutes, 'cause I just noticed that Cain and Kain have a lot in common, besides the names. Both wicked blonde vampire bishies. Maybe I should do a crossover? Nah, they'd probably just kill each other.
