Chapter 2: The Dragon Becomes a Wolf
She was surrounded by blue. Blue liquid. She could see men stariing at her with concern and wonder. She didn’t recognize them. Was she in hell? Wasn’t she supposed to be dead?
“It’s amazing that she recovered at all. I’ve never seen someone so near death,” one man commented.
‘Near death? All I remember… Vicious and Spike. They killed me, because they were too blind trying to kill each other. I was supposed to be death’s sacrifice. Why aren’t I dead?’
“I have to admit, god must have guided us this year. To have a woman so close to death, brought back in a mere year since her placement. It’s amazing!” another man said.“Loo“Look, she’s conscious! Wow, what eyes. She’s beautiful,” the third, and youngest exclaimed.
The second, far older man turned to his college and nodded. “Let us start the reanimation process.”
‘Reanimation? But I’m dead!’ she screamed mentally as her vision blurred and faded into blackness.
~*~
“So, the Van ordered that I be suspe sho should I be nearly killed?” she asked.
The older man, later introduced as Dr. Geller, nodded. “Yes, it was their strict instruction. You are the rightful heir to the Red Dragons, you must survive to bring order back to us.”
Rain shook her head. “Vicious already killed me, he’s the rightful leader. I thank you for saving me, but it was all for naught.”
“True, Rain Deacon is dead. There was a public funeral, hundreds attended. You were very much loved,” Dr. Geller said. “But we have a new Identity picked out for you. Your name is Amaya Ryu, you’re a new assassin for the Red Dragons, seeing as how Sith is occupied.”
“Occupied?” Rain… no, Amaya asked.
“She is carrying out your final request to her. She is protecting Aurora and Vicious. Anyways, you have all the proper training of an assassin of high caliber. Vicious will never see you, don’t worry, you are a… private person. The missions will be sent via a courier. His name is Rodger Smith.”
“What an original name,” Amaya quipped.
“Not my fault, it’s what my parents named me,” the younger man from before said as he entered the room. “Man, you’re hotter than your pictures!”
Amaya laughed. “Whatever. So, Rodger, what’s my mission?”
“Already? I mean, you just recovered,” Rodger protested.
“I’m a quick healer. You should have me tell you about the time I walked sround poisioned for a week, before dropping.”
“Okay, Ms. Ryu, you’re to…” her hearing faded out as he prattled on about her first mission as Amaya Ryu.
~*~*~*~
Things remained that way. She lived in a small apartment in a forgettable side of town, taking out men of other syndicates. She was good at it too. Her time as a head honcho and as a vegetable hadn’t hurt her abilities. If anything, she was harder. No longer did she toy with her victims, she would lure them away, yes, but then would kill them and any that protected him in cold blood. She became known as simply, Amaya, the wolf of the night rain.
Her weapons of choice were no longer her pistol. Oh sure, she used them, but now she preferred something more… stylish. Pehaps it was all those years of working with Vicious, maybe not, either way she used a sword. When she first joined the syndicate all those years ago, she had been trained in all matter of weaponry, the sword was one of them that she was truly talented with. The katana held a personal space within her heart. She carried a katana that she had kept stored in a warehouse, it was centuries old, and had seen much bloodshed. It was called ookami, or wolf. Amaya treasured it. The blade was light and thin, folded 2,000 times, or so it was rumored to have been. The handle was black, the tsuba made of iron and inlaid with the gold image of a wolf. It was the perfect weapon, and was razor sharp. The scabbard was black as well, capped with bull’s horn. She carried it with her, always. She also owned the rest of the daisho, but did not use them, only kept them on display in her apartment.
To the rest of the world, she was an ancient shadow, a shadow that came with the rain at night to purify the city of the corrupt. She laughed at that thought. The very people that gave her those orders were corrupt, rotten to the core. She would one day kill them as well.

“
“Amaya!” a man called from the end of the alley.
Amaya turned slowly, her drenched hair hanging around her like a wet curtain. Her grey eyes seeming silver in the light of the street. Cooling blood on the dark cement of the ground trickled with tain ain at her shoes. A pink scar ran over her left eye, giving her a fierce look of the predator.
“God! You look like-“ the man started.
“Like what? lf plf perhaps?” she teased.
“I’m here to take you in!” the young man shouted as he regained his composure.
“Right. And you’re what? A cowboy? I used to be one, long ago. I know that you can’t kill me to get the reward, I know that you probably never killed anyone in your life. The thing is… I’m not a cowboy anymore!” she growled as she leapt forward and sliced off the young cowboy’s head.
The body fell with a resounding thump as his head rolled into the alley. Amaya scowled at the young man. “He ’t e’t even see me. He was a rookie, probably thought it would be cool to be a bounty hunter. Too bad, kid,” she said to the night as she turned and slipped into the shadows.
~*~*~*~
Amaya watched silently as the little girl laughed and messily ate at her ice cream. Her eyes were turning grey, much like hers had. She smiled softly as A tall man with silver hair took a seat next to her, an identical cone in his hand. He wouldn’t notice her, neither would the crimson haired woman that attempted to keep the child clean, to no avail. She had transformed from a dragon to a wolf, and they only knew her as the dragon. Not to mention, she had become far better at hiding in the shadows than she had once been. She smiled wider as the child’s ice cream fell from the cone, landing in the woman’s lap. She watched the laughter follow and the slight turning of the woman’s mouth as she attempted to now clean off her own mess.
‘Sith, you’re smiling. You seem so… free. Has Kate finally let you go?’ she asked mentally.
Amaya then turned into the shadows and melted away from the happy scene. She had a job coming up that evening. A leader in the Black Wolves needed to die, and the Night Wolf’s blade would do the killing.
~*~*~*~
“No… Please, I beg you!” the man pleaded.
Amaya watched on with empty eyes as the man kneeled before her, the bodies of his bodyguards surrounding him, their blood, soaking into his pants. “Pitiful, a man of a syndicate that cannot defend himself.”
“I beg you, Night Wolf. Please, I’ll give you anything!”
“I want nothing from you. You are a sniveling bureaucrat, a clinging parasite! Unfit to call yourself syndicate! I will clense this world of your… political filth!” she declared as she placed a hand on ookami’s hilt. “Feel pleasure that your death will be quick.”
With a flick of her wrist, the man’s corpse fell to the earth, his head at her feet, his dark eyes still pleading for mercy, and his blood lapping at her feet. Amaya could feel something pressing against her now, an ominous feeling. “Much will come from this,” she muttered as she turned and vanished into the night.
~*~*~*~
Five men, all with automatic pistols and two with submachine guns pointed at her, surrounded Amaya in a semi circle. She could kill three with her first swing, no big. It was the other two that may have posed a problem.
“Amaya, the Wolf of the Night Rain! Come with us and no one gets hurt!” the one in the center said.
Amaya sighed. ‘At least they got the name right.’ “Cowboys are so predictable. Let me guess… ex-ISSP?”
Surprise passed through the eyes of the men. The leader in the center raised an eyebrow. “How can you tell?”
“You talk like a cop, you all move like cops. I used to know an ex-ISSP bounty hunter. His style never really left the world of the cop. You guys think that you’re truly doing good. Here’s a question for you, though.”
“Yes?” he asked.
“Why did you leave your former jobs? Because of corruption? Of betrayal? Well, the world isn’t as pure as you think, boys. I kill, I’m sure you all have killed, but where you doubted your former jobs, I do not. Every life I have lived, I have only doubted once, and that time, I died,” she said as she swung outward, her blade looking like pure blue light as she arched forwards, slicing through two of the men at her right, where her blade had sat, and one at her right, where the last stood. The two in the center stared wide eyed at her.
“She moves like nothing I’ve ever seen before!” one shouted.
The leader narrowed his gaze at Amaya. “You’re really as good as they say.”
Amaya smiled, arrogantly, a glimpse of her old self.. “I am.”
The man’s eyes went wide at her. “You’re Rain Deacon!”
Amaya’s smirk faded. “She’s dead.”
The other man glanced to her and then to his boss. “What should we do?”
“We take her in. The reward is still good, even If she’s bleeding,” the leader said as he opened fire.
Amaya grunted as she felt the familiar sting of bullets slice into her gut. She then locked her grey gaze with that of the shooting man and smiled maliciously. ‘For once, a challenge!’ she thought as she swept forward, killing the second cop before smashing the leader into the wall.
“You move like an animal?” the leader grunted as he felt the sharp bite of her blade at his throat.
“I am, an animal,” Amaya whispered as she sliced his throat and let his body fall to the ground.
The adrenaline faded, the pain shot forth, crippling her. Amaya fell to the wall, her shoulder holding her up. She knew this street. It was HIS street. No where to turn, she limped out of the alley. ‘Time for an old snake to see the reborn wolf.’
