Losing

The boy ran as fast as he could but the vampires were easily gaining on him. His feet splashed on the wet roads as he ran. He didn't dare look back for fear of what he might see. At least ten vampires had seen him trying to get to the Church but how many had seen him running since then.

As he turned yet another corner in the city's maze-like streets he heard the vampires feet splashing not far behind him. As he ran he looked for anyway of hiding himself. Eventually he saw a large garbage can. Without looking at the vampires, he threw himself behind it hoping they had not seen him.

He pressed his back up against the metal praying the vampires would not see him. Suddenly, six vampires ran past the garbage can without looking. The boy stared after them as the ran down the street and turned a corner.

He began to relax as the sound of running feet had stopped. He slowly got up, not taking his eyes of the corner the vampires took in case they came back, and started to walk away. As he turned his head, a pair of purple eyes met his own. The boy would have screamed but a hand covered his mouth.

“Shh,” the other boy said in a deep voice. “We don't want anyone to see us now, do we?”

The smaller boy shook his head. He felt the other of the purple eyed boy's hands in his long black hair.

“What's your name?” the taller boy asked. He removed his hand from the green eyed boy's mouth to hear him whisper “Mokuba”.

“Well Mokuba,” the older boy said, “how would you like to come with me to somewhere you'll be safe?”

Mokuba nodded, hoping that the strange boy could take him away from the vampires. But his hopes were dashed the moment the other boy smiled revealing to large fangs.

“Don't worry,” the vampire said, “I'm not going to hurt you. I don't want your blood. I just want you.”

With that, the vampire hit Mokuba's temple. The boy feel unconscious immediately. The vampire took Mokuba in his arms and began to walk along the dark street.

The churches and other blessed areas had become the humans only sanctuary. Once again people were finding solace in God. Many people believed that the crosses and holy water are what kept the vampires away whereas others thought that the vampires were afraid to set foot on holy ground.

These rumors were untrue. The vampires, not matter how ruthless and evil, still had hearts. They believed that the humans, even though inferior beings, had the right to some form of protection. True they needed the humans to feed on but they were prepared to fight for a good meal.

The small church in Evergreen street was the place Mokuba was trying to reach. It was his home, as well as the home to many others including a vampire hunter named Kai and a boy called Eriol.

Eriol was sitting alone near the stone alter of the church. He was waiting for Mokuba to return. The two had been friends for years. They shared similar pasts and fears of the vampires. Both boys had lost their families due to the vampires' slaughters. Mokuba was Eriol's only friend, and Eriol the same for Mokuba. They relied on each other to get through each day. If anything happened to Mokuba, Eriol didn't know how he would survive.

Eriol looked at his watch. It was almost midnight, prime vampire hunting hours, and Mokuba still hadn't some back. The two had gotten into an argument earlier that day and Mokuba stormed off. That was several hours ago and Eriol was beginning to worry about his friend.

“You okay?”

Eriol looked around to see the vampire hunter Kai take a seat next to him.

“Yeah, I'm just worried about Mokuba,” Eriol told him. “He still hasn't come back yet.”

Suddenly, the look on Kai's face went from pity to shock. “You mean you don't know?”

“Don't know what?” Eriol asked.

“Mokuba,” Kai began. “The vampires. They took him.”

“WHAT!?”

Eriol jumped to his feet. “What do you mean they took him?”

Kai stood up too. “Like the did the other kids. They kidnapped him.”

Eriol was in shock. He wanted to cry but the tears wouldn't come. If the vampires had taken Mokuba then they would surly kill him or make him one of them. Why was it that he kept losing the people he loved to the vampires? Why did they cause him so much pain?

Kai touched his shoulder affectionately. “I know it hard, losing to them but-”

Eriol pushed Kai's had off him. “Losing to them? I didn't lose to them. I keep losing people I love to them. This isn't some game Kai, this is out lives. We have to spend each day trying to figure out how we're gonna survive. I though you of all people would understand that.”

Kai's eyes followed Eriol as he walked off. Why did Eriol take losing someone so hard? Kai had seen countless teammates be taken by the vampires but he didn't cry.

“But what if they took Tyson?” Kai thought to himself. “Would I cry then?”

Thinking this Kai sat back down and drifted into an uneasy sleep.
