Tragedy Realized
~Gojyo~
I don’t know what shook me more: the thunder crashing outside my window or Hakkai’s screams. I thought I would be used to screaming but anymore when I hear Hakkai scream, my breath catches and I can’t move. I’m useless to him. Only Sanzo and Goku can help him in this darkness he’s fallen into.
It had been a normal evening for us. I remember fighting over something silly with Goku. Hakkai was calming the fight, while Sanzo was reading his daily paper. He was also trying to work on his list of supplies we needed on our journey. I offered my help but Hakkai declined.
“You look tired. Besides, I’ve shopped for myself without you many times Gojyo.” He had said cheerfully.
“We have to leave in the morning anyways and we have more than enough to last us. No worries, man.” I smiled, trying to keep him inside.
“I don’t mind going out and getting the things we need. Besides, I need to get some exercise anyways.” Hakkai protested, patting my back.
“Alright. I know I won’t win an argument against you.” I chuckled, enjoying the motion.
I watched him walk out the door and told him to be careful. We face danger every day, so it’s natural I warn him to be careful. I never expected my warning to come true.

He didn’t come back that evening. I went to bed early after much coaxing from Goku. He always means well, every since we met that night three years ago. When I woke the next morning, Hakkai wasn’t there. It was surprising, considering that he wasn’t one to stay out all night. The puzzle deepened when he was still gone by lunch. The six of us were completely stumped.
“I’m sure he’ll turn up. Hakkai might have needed to blow off some steam last night and overslept somewhere. He can be spontaneous at times you know.” Goku suggested to me, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“I’m good. It’s no big deal. I’m not his mom after all.” I smiled, wishing for him to leave me to my thoughts.
The innkeeperess rushed in at that moment, flushed and panting. Her eyes held a despair that meant no good to anyone.
“What seems to be the trouble, miss?” Sanzo sighed in his normal fashion, flipping the page in his paper.
“Is everything all right. Nothing I can do to make it better, hmm?” I asked easily, trying to lighten her mood.
“….We’ve found your friend.” Was all she said, keeping her eyes on the ground.
“Oh really. That’s good. We can get on the road now.” I grinned, getting up from my seat.
“I’m sorry. He’s really isn’t in any condition to travel…” she said slowly.
“What do you mean? Is something wrong with Hakkai?” I asked, blinking in confusion.
She took in deep breaths, unsteady ones. She came over to me and laid a hand on my own.
“I’m sorry, Mister Gojyo….. He’s in a bad way. He… he was raped last night and they found him this morning. He’s been with the town healer ever since. I’m so sorry, Mister Gojyo.” She had exclaimed rather hurriedly.
That was when my entire world crumbled before me.
