Chapter Two

Narrow red eyes bearing the trademark slitted pupils invaded Hakkai’s dreams that night. The eyes were so sinister… absolutely dripping with malice and sick pleasure. And yet… they were so entrancing. Mesmerizing. As he stared deeper into those deadly eyes he could feel something slowly constricting around his throat. He tried to lift his arms to pry the lethal grip away but his body wouldn’t respond to his commands. Panic began to overwhelm his thoughts. The stare of those eyes only grew more intense and excited. Soon enough he was unable to draw in any breath at all. Hakkai could feel the world around him fading and there was absolutely nothing he could do to stop it.

“Gonou…” The voice echoed through his head and for a moment he thought he could almost see a face to go with those eyes. But it was gone just as quickly as it had appeared. “Gonou… I’m going to break you…”

Hakkai’s lungs began to burn. If he didn’t get oxygen soon he would surely die! Talons drew across the side of his neck slowly spilling his blood over his pale skin. The searing pain only added fuel to his apprehension. The pale clawed hand pulled back into the shadows and he could barely see a tongue flick out to clean the blood from the deadly fingers. The brunette felt himself growing weak. Between the blood loss and the suffocation his mind was swirling in an icy fog that seemed to slowly close in on him.

“But I’m not going to kill you…” The voice added. Immediately after that thought sunk into Hakkai’s muddled mind his futile attempts to gasp in air actually bore fruit. Cool air filled his starving lungs and the eyes were gone. He was floating in a world of inky darkness. He could hear someone calling his name from a distance. Each time the voice grew louder and louder until…

Hakkai’s eyes opened wide to stare right into crimson ones alight with panic. “HAKKAI!” The voice yelled. “Are you ok?!”

The brunette took in a few more gasping breaths before nodding lightly and answering. “Hai…”

Gojyo sat back a bit and sighed, brushing his long red locks out of his eyes. “God dammit! Don’t scare me like that you bastard! You were damn near convulsing and you weren’t breathing. I really thought you were a goner.”

Hakkai shook his head lightly. Several thoughts were swimming around in his head right now but more than anything, he just wanted to sleep. “It was… just a nightmare. I didn’t mean to worry you.” He said forcing up a soft smile. “Now, if it’s alright with you, I would really like to get back to sleep. We have work in the morning after all.”

Gojyo agreed and let Hakkai fall back to sleep, he himself doing the same, pushing his worries aside for now.

The sun was bright to his emerald eyes. It no longer burned his skin but even with his hunger satisfied it was still too much for his eyes to handle. He looked down at the sandwich he was eating with a soft sigh. He jumped ever so slightly when he felt a hand land lightly on his shoulder.

“Oi… I didn’t really expect you to come in today.” The deep voice of the blonde spoke from behind him. “And furthermore, I didn’t expect you to be eating lunch outside today. You always seem so out of place in the bright light.” He said lighting up a cigarette. His hand slipped away from the brunette’s shoulder and Hakkai turned to look at him. To the brunette’s surprise there was a boy standing next to Kouryuu. He was staring off to his right, distracted by some small colorful insect.

“Hai… I’m feeling much better. I really shouldn’t miss so many days.” The brunette said, staring at the boy.

Sanzo glanced at the smaller brunette and his eyebrow twitched in annoyance. He smacked the boy upside the head with a folded paper fan that seemed to just suddenly appear in his hand. Hakkai never saw him brandish the ‘weapon’. The boy yelped in shock and glared at the blonde.

“OW! Dammit! Cut that out, Sanzo!” The boy barked and rubbed the assaulted area.

Hakkai blinked a few times in mild confusion. The name was unfamiliar to him. “Sanzo?” He quarried to the blonde.

“Just some stupid nickname this stupid monkey gave me. He says I remind him of some character from some stupid book he read. Can you believe that? Does he really look like he can read?” Sanzo snorted and the Harrison was already gone. “Anyway, this is Goku. I just thought you two should meet. I’ve been… taking care of him for some time now but he’s been too weak to leave the house.”

Large innocent golden eyes locked with stunned emerald and the boy smiled… a bright, carefree smile. His soul felt so pure… so devoid of sin and yet…

“Nice ta meet ya! Yer Hakkai, right? Sanzo’s told me a lot about ya!” The boy said and held out his hand happily to shake the older brunette’s.

Hakkai stared at it for a moment as if he had no idea what to do with the boy’s hand before he seemed to realize and grasped it lightly, shaking it. “Yes, that’s right. It’s nice to make your acquaintance.”

Goku smiled brightly. Hakkai swore he could feel light radiating from the boy’s soul. The light almost burned through his and he couldn’t help but smile. The boy’s upbeat attitude was infections.

“Gonou!”

The voice cut through his mind, his surroundings, and even the boy’s light like a razor blade through water. It was already growing harder to breathe and he could feel his world fading. His stomach turned… and everything went dark.

Those red eyes… they were back again. He was surrounded by nothingness… nothingness and those red eyes. They were boring into him again as if they could see his soul. He could almost feel them tainting him further if that was even possible.

“Could you feel it?” The voice asked.

“Feel what…?” Hakkai replied. It almost felt like he wasn’t entirely in control of himself again. His voice sounded dazed, even to his own ears.

“That boy… He’s our kin. One of our brethren.”

Hakkai shook his head groggily. “I’m not your kin…” Hakkai protested weakly.

“Oh no? You don’t remember me do you? No… You’ve forgotten who I am. That’s why I’ve come back. You’ve forgotten to whom you belong. You’ve forgotten your master. I need to make you remember. You should never be allowed to sleep soundly at night after what you’ve done.” The voice said, sounded wickedly delighted at the prospect of making him remember. His tone grew dark but there was still the hint of a twisted smirk in his tone. “I want to make you suffer, Gonou.”

Hakkai felt something constrict around his neck again. He couldn’t breathe. But he was almost too distracted to really panic this time. His mind was reeling. He was trying to remember that that he seemed to have forgotten. Who was this man that seemed to take delight in his torture?

Hakkai’s eyes opened again and he realized he was inside once more. A ceiling came into focus. Movement off to the side caught his eye and he spotted the small brunette from earlier leaning over the couch where he was laying.

“Oi, Sanzo! He’s awake!” Goku called to the other room and smiled at Hakkai. “Ya passed out.” The boy frowned. Hakkai thought absentmindedly that the expression didn’t suit the boy at all.

Sanzo came into view soon after and looked Hakkai over carefully. When he confirmed Hakkai was ok he let his features take on that ‘not like I care’ attitude again and wiped away the worry. “Tch… idiot.” He spat and lit another cigarette taking in a deep breath of the smoke and blowing it back out. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Sanzo growled.

A slight dread weighed down heavily in his chest. Did Goku tell him? Which poses the next question; why was Sanzo nursing a vampire back to health anyway? He had to have known that Goku was…

He decided to play it safe. “What didn’t I tell you?” He asked innocently. No sooner had he finished his sentence a flash of silver caught his eye and the next thing he knew there was a silver revolver aimed between his eyes. Looking beyond the silver pistol he met deep irate amethyst eyes.

The smaller boy jumped away from the couch, golden eyes large as dinner plates with his mouth hanging open in surprise. “S-Sanzo!? Wh-what the hell?”
