Chapter 2

The walk was silent for the most part, except for the occasional sniffle coming from Shampoo who was beginning to get herself back to normal. Or at least, back to as much normality as can be expected in such a situation.

For a long while, they began to believe that Trunks was right about there not being anymore flesh-eaters out and about. They were suddenly proven wrong, however, when three emerged from seemingly out of nowhere. They fought them off effectively enough and managed not to get bitten again. They finally came to the yard behind Jacklyn’s house that separated itself from Jacklyn’s yard with a large wooden fence.

“Okay,” Jes began, deciding to be the brave one. “Now, we are directly behind Jacklyn’s house. So, everyone just stay here, and I’ll check to see if the coast is clear or not.”

Jes found a small child’s plastic slide laying in the yard. He positioned it next to the wooden fence and climbed on it to look over to fence. Seconds later, he descended, pale faced.

“Are there any out there?” Mousse asked.

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Lots.”

Mousse took a look for himself and nearly shrieked. Hundreds of bloody bodies staggered around Jacklyn’s house. He descended and looked a bit confused. “So why are they all gathering at Jacklyn’s house?”

“Well, it is the biggest damn house in the whole freaking neighborhood.” Trunks answered, peeking through a hole in the fence. “This doesn’t seem smart. I think we should turn around and go somewhere else.”

“Where the hell are we gonna go, Trunks? Or haven’t you noticed that we’re pretty much surrounded by flesh eating zombies!?” Mousse snapped at him.

“No, Jacklyn’s house is surrounded by flesh eating zombies. We can still make it if we turn back now.”

“But if they’re all gathering around the house, doesn’t that mean that they haven’t figured out how to get in it yet?”

“Do you really want to be stuck there for God knows how long? Limited food and water and such… I say we go somewhere else…Anywhere, just as long as it’s safe.”

“We no leave Jei-chan!” Shampoo shrieked, perhaps a little too loud. Jes cringed and they all went silent. Suddenly, there was a great pounding on the wooden fence. It began to wobble and sway, and some of the zombies had managed to burst their fists through the fence to make grabbing motions at the group.

“Okay, Trunks, where do you want us to go?” Jes asked quickly, beginning to panic. Trunks put his hands to his head, trying to think as fast as he could.

“That way, let’s just go that way! I think the mall is over there!” He finally responded.

As the fence began to topple over, they all took off running as fast as they possibly could, their adrenaline pushing them harder than ever before.

They eventually found themselves on the road again and still being chased by hundreds of zombies. They knew that their only chance would be to get to the mall that looked to be a few yards away from them, plus some to get through the parking lot. Jes, being the fastest runner, announced to them that he’d try to get there before them to unlock the doors to J.C. Penny’s so they could get in.

As he approached the glass doors, he found that they were locked tight and it seemed impossible for him to use brute strength to get it open. He looked around quickly for anything he could use to pry it open. He then remembered his pocket knife he kept in his back pocket. He used the blade to pick the lock.

Jes’s friends finally caught up to him and were screaming for him to hurry. He gritted his teeth, but with shaky hands, he finally managed to get the door open and his friends in right as the zombies began to collect at the door. Struggling to keep control over the door which was being pulled open by the snarling zombies, Jes managed to pull it shut and lock it back.

The group all took a few steps back and let out a relieved sigh. Jes was the one who broke their relaxation when he realized what had to be done.

“Okay, now we’ve got to make sure this place is locked up and secure. We’ve also gotta try to find some weapons, which won’t be too hard in a place like this. Mousse and Shampoo, you two go look for guns, knives, baseball bats, that sort of stuff. Trunks and I will secure the mall.”
