I was amazed that I wasn’t shaking like a leaf in a tornado while I waited for my opponent to serve. It’s not as if I would lose, although given who my opponent was, that might change. No, I was calm as a sunny, private beach in the Caribbean.
Kaoru tossed the small yellow ball into the air and I felt myself shift, change. It happened every time I played tennis, the main reason why I played. I love the feeling I got when ever this happened, my shift. That’s what my brother always called it- the Shift. I felt my hearing sharpen, noticing, but not caring about the eight hearts beating fifteen feet away or the humming bird thirty feet out of the tennis court fence. My eyes focused, taking in the dust molecules between me and my challenger, the specs moved around him as he leaned back, slowly to me because my mind was racing faster than NASCAR. I felt my pupils narrow to slits to absorb more light and movement, and the lids closed ever so slightly. My feet slid apart from each other, making my stance wider, my knees bending further underneath me. My arms drooped and seemed to sag. To everyone there, I probably looked as if I was falling asleep or in a trance. Which was closer to anything that I could have thought up on my own.
Kiadoh swung, fast, despite having just gone all out in practice. But then, it was fast enough. I met the ball before I took another breath and rallied it back. Another part of the shift, speed, lots of speed. Faster than Eiji's, and inborn. Of course I honed it and made it faster, but I don’t really use it on an every day basis.
My smooth opponent slithered and slid around the court, snaking balls one way then powering them another. None of them got past me. I did however, miss one ball. I had looked up and met his clear focused gaze. His face had been so stunning that I tripped and nearly ate ground. I got my hand under me and flipped just in time to save my face from major harm. His first and only point.
The match didn’t last long, and Momoshiro was bubbling over with excitement. "Holy shit!! A noob just beat viper!! No offence to you man."
I grinned, "It’s all good. None taken. But he had a match before ours so it was a bit of an advantage for me."
"What style was that?" Inui asked. His voice was quieter, my shift toning down. "I've never seen that stance or that speed. Your flexibility is greater than that of Eiji's. Where have you trained?"
"No where, honestly. It’s all natural. I've played on my own for a while now. That's how I've always played. My brother calls it 'Shift'. “I inwardly grimaced at letting them know I had a brother, but no one caught it, well accept Inui of course.”It stuck, so that's what it’s been called." I handed my loaned racket to the note taking player and grabbed my bag. "Since you guys seem done here, can I get some help finding my way around this place?" Now I had less time to find the office and get my head on straight.
"Sure, I don’t have a first period so I'll help you out." said Inui.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
"So where're you from... oh.." Eiji grimaced, "What's your name?"
I laughed, "T- uh Kori" 'That was waaayyy to close' I thought to myself.
"Oh, that doesn’t sound Japanese, well it does but not a normal name." Kikumaru said, trying to be polite about his curiosity.
"It’s a long story that would bore your rackets into a coma" I told them. They laughed and walked through the gate. I turned for the first time to evaluate the eyes that I felt on the back of my neck since the end of our match. "That was a great game, Kaidoh-sempi. Your moves are wicked fast."
I put my hand out for a shake, expecting him to ignore it and was shocked when he slowly extended his hand to grasp mine. If that wasn’t enough, when he grabbed my hand, he pulled me forward into his chest. I couldn't do anything to stop him as he was stronger than me, but couldn't do anything whether I wanted to or not because he put his face in the crook of my neck and inhaled deeply.
"Female..Fssshhhssss" he hissed.
"Wha.. what?" I stammered.
"You smell like a female. But you sweat too much to be a girl." he criticized. He let go and grabbed his things before I could turn around. So much for my speed. I watched as he stalked off and was barely thinking clearly when Inui called my fake name to get my attention. I rushed over to him and followed diligently as he explained where everything was.
I didn't hear any of it. My focus was on a certain hissing tennis player that had just sniffed me. And said I smelled like a female.. 'this is dangerous,' I thought to myself. But then, I never listened to my self preservation.
