Chapter I
The Cargo plane made its way over the Asian continent nearing its final destination, an air field on the fringes of Tokyo-3. The ‘cargo’ wasn’t really aware of any of this, all he knew was that the flight seemed to be taking far too long, though if he was honest with himself he didn’t really mind the trip. It was the first time in a long time he had been allowed to sleep in his Entry Plug and he was thoroughly enjoying the experience; in there the world was quite, in there the world was still, in there he found peace.
He had never been able to explain it, nor could anyone else, but his affinity for the EVA-Xavier (EVA-X or X for short) had been more than a simple bond between warrior and weapon. No, his bond with his EVA was deeper than that. Maybe it was because it was his families’ money that had finance its construction and as such he had been allowed to ‘customize’ it to better suit his style (Both in combat and aesthetics) Maybe it was because he was the only one that Xavier would move for? Or, maybe it was because he had named it? So many maybes but no really answers; but, whatever the reason Jason felt more at home in the LCL filled Entry Plug than, well, at home.
A com-screen appeared before the sleeping boy, ‘Audio Only’
“You awake, Sir?”
The boy sighed; a few bubbles floated up though the orange-ish liquid. Damn he was having a good daydream.
“I am now Captain, what is it?”
“We are approaching Tokyo-3 now Sir. However…”
“What is it Captain?”
“Well it seems that something is attacking the city. We’ve been advised to divert to Tokyo-2 until the situation is resolved.”
The boy waited before speaking, thinking. ‘Something’ was attacking Tokyo-3? Had to be an Angel, what else could it be? And of course the Captain was a few pay grades below being privy to that particular piece of information. But this thought was only a whisper in the back of the boys mind what was taking up is full attention was simply this.
‘An Angel; finally an Angel, like hell am I missing out on this!’
“Captain how far out from the attack site are we?”
“Sir?”
“You heard me Captain, how far?”
“It’s about ten minuets west, roughly ten miles outside the city centre. Why do you ask Sir?” though he asked the question the Captain feared he already knew the answer and indeed he shared a knowing look with his co-pilot who, asides from the boy and the unknown cargo they were transporting was the only other person onboard.
“Captain,” said Jason a grin spreading across his lips, “I want you to set the auto pilot to take the plane over the site. You will then transfer control of the ship over to me, look at the red pages in the manual under your seat you’ll find instructions there. Once you have done all this you and your co-pilot will vacate the plane.”
“Sir?!”
“I believe there are enough parachutes and that you’ve had the proper training. If not its simple: strap it on, jump out the plane, wait ten seconds then pull the yellow tab. Simple.”
“Sir you cant be…”
“Must I pull rank Captain? Very well this is an order from a superior officer and your employer: Set the auto pilot, transfer control over to me and then jump out the plane. Do you understand?”
“I…”
Jason said nothing; the Captain was a loyal man and would follow the order, even if he really didn’t want to jump out of a plane at 20,000 feet.
“I understand Sir, auto pilot is set and…”
A virtual displace of the planes systems popped up on the Entry Plugs HUD; Altitude, air pressure, speed, fuel, etc. all green. Good.
“Control of the plane has been handed over to you…are you sure…?”
“Jump Captain and know that you and your associate will be compensated for your troubles.”
“I see, what about…”
“Me?” Jason smiled again even wider this time, “Why Captain, I’m going to go have some fun. Good bye Captain and bon voyage.”
The boy laughed hysterically as the Captain and the co-pilot jumped out of the plane. Ten seconds later the chutes were deployed and the two watched as the massive aircraft flew away, slowly drifting to the right, aligning the new course which would send it right into the heart of whatever it was that was attacking the city.
“Right!” Jason clapped his hands together, a ritual he had adopted before he did anything of interest to him. Grabbing the hand controls before him he flipped and pushed a few buttons and the Entry Plug flooded to life.
“Troy, you there?”
“Always Sir,” came a disembodied male voice from somewhere inside the Entry Plug “what would you have me do?”
“I need you to hack into the NERV communication frequencies.”
“Any of the frequencies in particular, Sir?”
“Yes, get me the number for Gendo Ikaris’ personal mobile.”
Troy, a little invention Jason had made in his spare time, was part AI, part personal assistant and part friend. Though not directly tied into any of the EVA controls, for security reasons, Troy was built into Jason’s’ plugsuit and as through it was connected to Jason through various connection points throughout. It was like having an extra mind working in conjuncture with his and came in very handy in complex situations like, for example, hacking into the commander of NERV’s personal mobile frequency. Such a feat, though not beyond Jason’s skills by a long shot, would have taken him at least half an hour, 15 min at the minimum, to complete. However for Troy the task only took...
“Frequency acquired Sir, shall I patch you though?”
“Please do Troy. Oh,” he added as an after thought, “whilst you’re at it could you please tap into NERV HQs view screens? Lets see what we’re dealing with.”
Jason chuckled, this should be interesting.
Commander Ikari watch as the battle between the NERV Evangelions and the corrupted Unit-03 continued. Things were not going well; he may have to use the Dummy Plug system soon if his son didn’t start putting up a fight! As it became apparent that Shinji was all but useless to him he began to issue the order to use the Dummy Plug when…his phone rang. Startled Gendo pulled out his phone and looked at it, who the hell would be calling him? For that matter who the hell could call him?
“Is this any time to be answering your phone?”
Gendo looked at Fuyutsuki with a blank face.
“Asides from you no one else has this number.”
The Sub-commanders eyes widened slightly.
“Then who…?”
“Lets find out.” Said Gendo flipping open the phone and putting it to his ear with a small about of uncertainty.
“Who is this?”
“Authorization Code: 00789461 Password: Seraphim.” said a young voice which held more command than its apparent age should have allowed.
What’s more the voice was familiar.
Gendo’s eyes widened.
“You’re…?”
“I am currently at 16,000 feet and descending fast, at my current speed and heading I’m approximately 3 minuets out from the combat zone. I’ve hacked into you view screens and see that the enemy is an EVA, Unit-03 if I’m not mistaken. Is this correct?”
“Yes but…”
“Understood. Xavier shall engage and eliminate the target. Confirmation: is the pilot still inside?”
“Yes but…”
“Understood.”
The line went dead.
“Who was that?”
Gendo said nothing at first finally after a moment looking down at the phone it finally hit him.
“Unit-01,” he yelled up at the screen, “Shinji…”
“Father?” replied the choking voice of his son.
“Run!”
But it was too late.
