Conversations

Yamato froze in the middle of the kitchen. From the knock on the front door Yamato knew that the time he had been dreading all day had come. He quickly rolled his sleeves down on his shirt to cover up his freshly bandaged arms and went to answer the door.

Yamato opened the door and saw someone that resembled his father. It had been a while since Yamato truly looked at his father and took in what he looked like. Hiroaki looked more tired and worn out than Yamato remembered how he usually did when he was finished with work. There were strands of grey hair scattered throughout his light brown hair. His eyes had become squinted, like they were constantly straining to see something. The suit that he wore looked faded and worn. This man couldn’t be his father, he looked far too old to be the youthful man Yamato called father.

“Going to let me in Yamato, or are we going to have our discussion out here?” Hiroaki asked.

Yamato stepped aside and ushered his father in, closing the door behind him They then walked down the hall.

Hiroaki sniffed the air, “It smells good in here. You cook?”

Yamato walked into the kitchen, “Just finished, help yourself.” Yamato said, gesturing to one of the two plates taken out.

“I’m not taking Taichi’s plate am I?” Hiroaki asked while picking up a plate. He then started to fix his plate.

“No he’s visiting Hikari. She’s sort of melted down , once Takeru said he couldn’t remember who she was.” Yamato said. He then grabbed his plate and fixed it.

“Poor girl, I hope she feels better soon.” Hiroaki said. “How are you holding up Yamato?”

“I don’t know. I’m glad Takeru is awake, but Nancy still won’t let me talk to him. I’ve tried a few times, and it’s always some sort of excuse.” Yamato said.

“You too? I was afraid that she would do something like this.” Hiroaki said sitting down at the table with a full plate.

“Is there still nothing we can do? Surely there must be something.” Yamato said, his plate was mostly empty. He didn’t have much of an appetite, even without being nervous about where this talk was soon going to go.

“We’ll discuss this later. But first dinner.” Hiroaki said before digging into his plate.

Yamato took a deep breath and began scooting his food around his plate.

As Hiroaki swallowed his last bite, Yamato knew that the time was up. The discussion time had arrived. “Yamato, it’s time for our discussion.”

Yamato sighed, “Okay, let’s get this over with.”

Hiroaki stared at his dirty plate in silence. Yamato wasn’t expecting his father to be silent, he was expecting a raised voice and possibly even dishes flying through the air and breaking.

Just as Yamato was about to stand to take the dishes to the sink, his father spoke. “How did it happen Yamato?”

So Yamato told him everything, well almost everything. Yamato did keep the dreams he had to himself, as well as Takeru’s and his sexual escapades. He did tell his father all about Takeru’s revelation of his feelings towards him. Told him about how he felt his feelings towards Takeru change during his stay. He also told his father about how Yutaka had got them to open up to each other. And about how most of their friends found out about them.

Hiroaki sat quietly through his son’s talk. Making very little acknowledgement that he was listening. But Yamato knew he was taking in every word.

“Why your brother, Yamato? You could have any person in the world and you pick your brother. So why him?” Hiroaki asked.

Yamato knew his father was going to ask something like this, but Yamato still didn’t have much of an answer prepared.

“It just seemed right. He is the only person I have ever really felt such a strong connection to. He’s the only person I have ever truly loved. He’s the only person I see in a crowd, and he’s the only one I see when I close my eyes. The day just seems so cold and long without him near me. ” Answered Yamato.

“And you are sure he wants this? You didn’t pressure him into doing this? You’re his big brother after all Yamato. He has worshipped you like a god since you were both little. I don’t think you even notice, but you hold so much sway with him. He’d do anything to please you Yamato. So how do you know he wants this, and not just going along with it to make you happy?” Hiroaki said.

“He said that he loved me first. Before I even could comprehend the feelings I had towards him. So how could he know I wanted this, before I even did? So I’m sure he wants this.” Yamato said.

“Is there anyway I can talk you out of this?” Hiroaki asked.

Yamato shook his head, “No there isn’t.”

“Then I’ll just sit back and accept it.” Hiroaki said leaning back into his chair.

Yamato looked at his father, “You mean you’re not angry?”

“Angry? No. Concerned? Yes.” Hiroaki said. “I’m both of yours father. My job is to love you two no matter what. So I’m not angry at you two. I’m still rather confused about how the feelings formed in the first place but it doesn’t really matter because they are there now. I’m concerned about you two. I don’t want to see something terrible happen between you two. Not only would it sever the love you have for each other, but it would sever that brotherly connection you two have shared so wonderfully for almost 17 years.”

“So you’re not going to hate us and disown us?” Yamato asked.

“Heavens no. It may be hard for me to accept the fact that you two are together. But it would be infinitely harder to lose you two.”

Yamato stood up and ran over to his dad and gave him a large hug. “Thanks Dad. I love you.”

Hiroaki wrapped his arms around his eldest son. “I love you too Yamato.” They hugged each other for a few moments before Hiroaki asked, “Was there dessert to go with that dinner?”

Yamato started to laugh. “Sure, let me just get it out of the freezer.” He released his dad and walked over to the freezer, wondering how he had gotten so lucky as to have such an awesome father.

It was after dessert that the discussion of Nancy and Takeru got brought back up.

“Are you sure there is nothing we can do?” Yamato asked.

“I’m sorry Yamato, but there isn’t. I’ve called up as many of my lawyer friends as I can and they all say the same thing. We just have to wait a bit, is all. Takeru should regain his memories any day, and then we can pick him up. Until then we just have to wait.” Hiroaki said.

“I just want to talk to him Dad. Is that too much to ask?” Yamato asked, his voice a little shaky with emotion.

“I do too Yamato. We’ll find a way.” Hiroaki said. He then checked his watch and stood up. “I should be going Yamato. Besides, you still need your rest.”

“Are you sure Dad? You could stay a little longer.” Yamato said.

Hiroaki shook his head, “No I should be going.” Hiroaki then walked to the front door and opened it. “Goodnight Yamato.

Yamato had followed his father to the door, “Goodnight Dad.” Once Hiroaki had walked down the hall, Yamato closed the door. Yamato walked back to the kitchen to clean up, with a smile on his face. The night had gone so much better than he expected. His luck seemed to be changing, perhaps he could talk with Takeru after
all.

It was a few days later when Yamato slammed his cell phone closed and chucked it across the kitchen. The phone's weak plastic body broke into pieces as it hit the wall. “THAT FUCKING BITCH!”

“Remember your breathing Yamato.” Taichi said from another room.

“She just finished feeding me another line of shit as to why I can’t talk to my brother, and you’re telling to breathe?” Yamato shouted as he walked out of the kitchen and down the hall.

“I’m just reminding you. Your therapist said….”

“My therapist is a dumbass who can take his special breathing techniques and shove them up his ass!” Shouted Yamato as he grabbed his keys and opened the door.

“Where are you going Yamato?” asked Taichi rushing to join his friend.

“I’m going to go over there and talk with him. She won’t dare try to bullshit me in person.” Yamato said stepping out of the door.

“Yamato I’m going with you.” Taichi said tossing his shoes on.

Yamato paused and looked at Taichi. Taichi stared back, ready for the argument that was bound to come. But it didn’t.

Yamato shrugged his shoulders, “Whatever.”

Taichi blinked a few times. “What?”

“You can come. If anything you can distract her while I sneak in.” Yamato said, “Now come on. If we run we can reach the bus in time.”

Taichi quickly exited the apartment, locked the door and joined his friend in the elevator. He was surprised that the lone wolf known as Yamato, was actually letting him come along.

Yamato stared at the door in front of him. A door he had often seen while he dropped his brother off, but a door he very rarely entered. The name of Takashi hung in the middle of the door. Yamato knocked on the door rather loudly. Yamato heard a female voice come from the other side, but couldn’t hear it clear enough to know what she said. Yamato looked down the hall and gave Taichi a thumbs up, signaling that they were answering. Yamato saw someone look into the peek hole, before the door opened a crack, the door secured by the chain lock.

“Hello Yamato.” Nancy said very warmly.

“I want to see Takeru.” Yamato stated rather calmly.

Nancy’s face slightly scrunched up, “He’s taking a nap right now Yamato. You’ll just have to talk to him later.”

“I don’t care! I just to see him!” Yamato shouted.

“Later Yamato, he’s busy.” Said Nancy.

Yamato raised his eyebrow, “I thought you said he was asleep.”

Nancy gave a quiet gasp, “Oh ummm…what I meant was, that he is busy being asleep.”

Yamato glared at the woman on the other side of the door from him. “You lying bitch.” Yamato said coldly.

A look of horror came over Nancy’s face, “You don’t talk to your mother that way!”

Anger blazed through Yamato. “You’re not my fucking mother! And you’re not Takeru’s either! You threw him out once already, you abandoned him when he needed you the most. You hurt him so deeply that you seriously traumatized him. So you have no right to call you self a mother!” Yamato shouted.

Nancy’s face became cold and full of anger, her voice growled but was rather quiet, “Listen here you little shit! You and your father are not going to ruin this for me. I get a second chance to make sure Takeru has a normal life. One safe of ridicule, hate and violence. And I am especially not going to let you anywhere near him. I know what you have done to my baby. How you manipulated him and used him in your own sick little games. That nice purple haired friend of Takeru’s told me all about how you were forcing yourself upon my defenseless baby.”

“You lying BITCH!” Yamato said he lunged at the door and hit it once with the best fist he could make before Taichi grabbed him.

“Easy Yamato.” Taichi ordered.

Yamato grunted in response.

“I’m calling the police.” Nancy said before closing the door.

From the safety of her apartment Nancy could hear footsteps quickly running down the hallway. She was so focused on those footsteps that she didn’t notice her youngest son wheel himself into the living room. “Mom, who was that?” Takeru asked, the worry in his voice was noticeable.

“I’m not going to lie to you Takeru, like some people would. That was your brother.” Nancy said.

“I have a brother?” Takeru asked.

“Yes, and he came over here to try and take you away from me. You see, his father and him are very mean people that will do anything they can to try to hurt me and you. They’ll tell you anything to get you to go to them. They’re rather smart and crafty, but so are most evil people. Yamato is a very rude young man that has very little decency. He runs around with a gang but they call themselves a band. He isn’t very mentally stable and he has severe anger issues. So you need to make sure that you avoid him the best you can. If he calls don’t answer, and if he stops by don’t open the door. Do you understand?”

Takeru nodded.

Nancy smiled, “Good. Now who wants ice cream?”

It was the next day and Yamato was back in hospital. As he sat on the exam table, he ranted to his friend who was busy performing tests. “She just pisses me off so much Jyou. I can’t stand even to think about her.”

“You need to calm down Yamato.” Said Jyou.

“She lied to me. Directly to my face, she lied to me. Not only that, but Miyako has been telling her all sorts of lies. Some friend she used to be.” Yamato continued.

“I understand Yamato. I do, but you need to calm down. Just breathe, Take in good energy and let out bad energy.” Jyou pleaded.

“Give me a break, Taichi didn’t tell you what my therapist said, did he?” Jyou asked.

“No. It’s just, I’m trying to take your blood pressure is all. You need to calm down, otherwise the results will come out all screwy.”

“Oh sorry Jyou.” Yamato said, he then hung his head down.

Once the test was over Jyou removed the cuff from Yamato arm. “I think I can help you Yamato.”

Yamato turned and looked at his friend, “Really Jyou? How?”

Jyou leaned in close to Yamato, “Listen closely because I’m not about to tell you something.”

Yamato got a confused look on his face, “Jyou you’ve been working too hard. That made no sense.”

“I’m NOT going to tell you that Takeru is going to be here in about 10 minutes for a checkup and a round of physical therapy. And I’m NOT going to tell you that, he is going to be in room 318. But I really CAN’T tell you that Nancy will be called out of the room for a few minutes to have a discussion with one of Takeru’s doctors.” Jyou said. He then stood up and grabbed Yamato files. “I believe we’re done Yamato. Everything seems fine, just keep soaking your arms as instructed.”

“Thank you so much Jyou.” Yamato said standing up.

“It’s no problem. I know you’d do the same for me. Now make sure you try not to assault anymore doors will you?” Jyou said, he then turned and left the room.

A few minutes later Yamato was standing down the hall from room 318. He had tucked himself away to avoid being seen from down the hall. And just as Jyou had said, Nancy and Takeru arrived and entered the room. A couple minutes later a doctor entered the room. A minute passed and no one left the room. Another minute and still no movement. After another minute passed Yamato thought that Jyou could have been wrong about Nancy being called out. But sure enough, the door opened and out stepped the doctor immediately followed by Nancy. They then walked down the hall and out of sight. Yamato couldn’t believe it, he had a free shot to his brother. Yamato walked as quickly as he could without drawing attention and quickly entered room 318.

“That was quick.” Takeru said. He then realized that it wasn’t his mother coming back in. “Sorry, I thought you were somebody else.”

Yamato smiled at his brother, “It’s okay Teeks.”

Takeru got a confused look upon his face, “Teeks?”

The smile on Yamato face quickly faded away. Upon hearing his brother’s voice his mind had slipped. He had forgotten about his brother’s memory lose. But his brother’s reaction to his nickname had suddenly brought reality crashing down upon Yamato.

“I’m sorry, I’ve having memory problems. Do I know you? You look familiar.” Takeru said.

Yamato walked closer to his brother, until he saw Takeru lean back into his chair, trying to stay away from him. Yamato stopped. “I’m your brother Takeru.”

Takeru stared at Yamato, as he remembered what his mother had told him about his brother. But what she said didn’t seem right, the person standing before him didn’t look crazy, or a hurtful person. But she did warn him that he was crafty and deceitful. Takeru shook his head, “I’m so sorry, but I really can’t remember you. The doctors say I have amnesia.”

“I’m sorry.” Yamato said, his voice cracked slightly.

“Don’t be. It’s not like it was your fault.” Takeru said.

Yamato heart started to ache. {If you could only remember what happened Takeru, would you still say the same thing?}

“Listen Takeru, I don’t have much time.” Yamato said stepping forward, Takeru didn’t try to move further away. “I just wanted to see you, see that you were okay. So how are you?”

“As well as I can be.” Takeru said.

“You’d tell me that even if you weren’t.” Said Yamato.

“I would?” Takeru asked inquisitively.

Yamato nodded with a weak smile. “I should be going. But first.” Yamato dug in his pocket and pulled out a cell phone. It was Takeru’s phone, he had been using it since he had broke his phone. “Here’s your cell phone. You had left it at my place. If you need anything give Dad or I a call. No matter what time of day, if you need us, call us.” Yamato extended the phone out to its true owner.

“Okay.” Takeru said very weakly taking the cell phone.

Yamato crouched down and pulled Takeru into an embrace. Takeru gasped in shock. “I’ve missed you so much Otouto-chan. Get to feeling better soon okay? I really love you Teeks.” Yamato continued to hug Takeru. He had missed the warmth that his brother had, the pleasant smell he had. Yamato felt his brother’s warm breath on his neck, and his heart started to race faster than it already was.

Takeru sat there rather uncomfortably as he was unsure what to do. He gave his brother a slight hug back, before quickly breaking the hug.

Yamato’s eyes started to water slightly as he stood up. “Goodbye Teeks, Love you.” He then turned around and quickly made for the door.

Yamato was in such a rush that he didn’t hear his little brother say, “Goodbye Yamato.”

Yamato rushed down the hall, both to make sure that Nancy didn’t see him leaving as well as to make sure that nobody saw him cry. Tears were streaming down the blonde’s face as he took the stairs to avoid the busy elevator. Yamato’s heart felt like it had been stomped upon. It was bad enough that Takeru hadn’t remembered him. Yamato had slightly prepared himself for that, so he could deal with that better. But Yamato never really took the time to think about how Takeru wouldn’t be able to remember the connection that was between them. Not only the brotherly connection but the love connection as well. Takeru’s reluctance to even hug Yamato had hurt Yamato deeply, but not as bad as not hearing Takeru say that he loved him. When he was half way down the stairs his legs failed him, and he crumpled down onto the stairwell. As Yamato sat on the cold stairs, he pulled his knees in close and let his tears go. Trying to let all the pain inside him escape.

As Takeru watched the person that had introduced himself as his brother walk away, he couldn’t help but think that maybe his mother was wrong. His brother didn’t seem like an angry psychopath, like she had made him out to be. If anything he seemed rather depressed, and really caring. But his mother said also that his brother and father were smart and would try anything to steal him away from her. Was what he had just seen an act? Did his brother really hate him? If so, why was his heart telling him other wise?
