Chapter 22: It\'s Been a While
Faye and Spike had yet to awaken. It had been three months since the incident. Faye had fallen into an exhausted sleep when she had arrived, Jack still in her arms. It was only then that the syndicate boys could pry his cold form from her bruising, tight grip. She was not in a fitful state in her bed. Luckily, she had only a few cuts and bruises. ‘Always the survivor,’ Amaya thought as she left her friend’s side for Spikes. Aurora had insisted that she watch over Faye, saying “No mommy should be alone after their baby goes to heaven.” She not lay beside the violet haired woman and cuddled close to her, trying to slowly heal the grieving woman’s soul. ‘Such an insightful child,’ Amaya thought as she entered Spike’s room.
Spike had been looked over, his shoulders had been dislocated, five broken ribs, a fractured jaw, not to mention that his back had been turned into so much raw and bleeding meat by some sort of whip, and then there was the fact that he’d been gang raped, from the looks of it. Amaya had not stopped weeping as the doctor told them, she was still crying, albeit silently.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered to his unconscious form. “I should have been there to protect you, and Faye, and Jet and… and Jack. I was so stuck in my own problems, I should have been there to stop that bitch,” she wept silently.
“Amaya?” a hoarse, choked voice asked.
Amaya lifted her head from her hands, her eyes wide as they locked with the deep, familiar brown of Spike. “Spike,” she gasped.
“Hey,” he greeted as he smiled to her.
Amaya whimpered and threw her arms around the lanky man. “Oh, Spike!” she cried out.
“All I say is hi, and you get all emotional. Are you pregnant again?” he joked.
Amaya pulled away, a quivering smile on her face as tears fell down. “Among other things.”
Spike smiled. “Thought so. Where the hell am I?” he asked.
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” she said.
“Amaya, this is me.”
Amaya nodded. “Yes, it is you. A man that’s been unconscious for three months. I mean, seriously, Jet recovered faster than you.”
“Is he okay?” he asked, his face growing serious.
“He’s staying with Ed and Ein. They send their love.”
“Faye?” he asked in a whisper.
“Aurora’s watching over her. She’s woken on occasion, but for the most part stays in whatever dream she’s been having. It’s understandable… considering.”
Spike froze. “Jack?”
Amaya shook her head slowly and looked away. “I’m so sorry, Spike. He… he didn’t survive.”
Spike trembled with anger and grief. “Why? Why would she do that?” he asked suddenly.
Amaya felt the tears fall again. “To hurt me. To torture me.”
“That’s why she did this? Why she… why she watched as they-“
Amaya bit back a sob as she nodded. “I’m so sorry, Spike. I should have been there. I should have been there to stop her.”
Spike sat up slowly, wincing at the soreness in his limbs after three months of disuse. He then enveloped the dark haired woman into his arms and let her cry into his chest. “You couldn’t have done anything.”
Amaya shook her head. “I would have killed her. I could have stopped her! But I was too involved with my own crap to see that she was alive! That she was playing with me!”
Spike stiffened as he caught the dark eyes of the observer at the door. “Sith!” he gasped.
“You’re awake,” Sith said.
Spike nodded and pulled Amaya away from his chest to look her in the eye. “Please don’t tell me that you brought me to who I think you did?”
Amaya smiled and snorted. “I didn’t bring you anywhere. I just called him.”
Spike groaned as his suspicions were concerned. “Vicious.”
Vicious smiled to his old friend and old rival. “You look happy to see me.”
Amaya glanced to Vicious. “Was that a joke I heard?” she asked.
Vicious shrugged. “You may be hearing things.”
Sith shook her head. “Sounded like a joke to me.”
Spike seemed shocked. “Is Sith being playful or is it me?”
Amaya chuckled. “I know, scary ain’t it?”
Spike sighed and leaned against the pillows behind him. “This is too much. The fact alone that you guys are here is a shock to the system, but for you two to develop a sense of humor? Man, I have been away for a long time.”
Sith snorted. “You haven’t changed.”
Spike shot her a cocky smile. “You have. Getting married to Vicious and carrying his kid too? When’d you become human?”
Amaya scowled and slapped Spike lightly on the head. “Shut up, Spike. I have ammo on you too.”
Spike gaped at the grey eyed woman before him and then shook his head. “Almost feels like old times,” he sighed.
Vicious nodded. “Does seem a bit reminiscent to those days.”
“Before Julia destroyed everything,” Sith snorted.
Spike stiffened at the mention of the blonde woman’s name. Amaya watched as fear seemed to creep into his eyes and he began to tremble slightly. All three of them surrounded him, watching him as he attempted to calm his body down. “Please, never say her name again,” he begged softly.
“You can’t hide from what happened, Spike. Eventually, we have to face her. You’ll have to face her. Then, I’lll hll her,” Amaya growled the last part.
“I’ll be fine. I just feel tired,” Spike sighed as he lay back down.
Vicious nodded and led both of the girls from the room, closing it behind him.

It was a long few weeks of recovery for the gangly, mossy haired man. Faye awaked not to long after him. Aurora stayed by her side, letting her know that she wasn’t alone. Amaya watched them from the doorway, a sad expression in her eyes as she watched Aurora listen to Faye reer aer a story.
As soon as Aurora was asleep, Faye turned to Amaya. “She’s such a sweet girl.”
Amaya nodded. “That she is. Faye… I-“
“I don’t blame you, Amaya. If you’d not showed up, I think I’d have lost Spike too.”
Amaya nodded. “But I should have stopped her. She shouldn’t have been able to do what she did.”
Faye sighed and walked over to Amaya. She then lashed out and slapped Amaya. “Stop blaming yourself! You can’t protect everyone.”
Amaya stared blankly, her head still facing right. “I know.”
Faye’s eyes softened. “If it hadn’t been for you, I’d never had the years that I did with Jack. Hell, if it hadn’t been for you, I’d never even conceived him. So stop moping and tell me that we’re going to kill that bitch!”
Amaya grinned weakly at Faye and nodded. “She’s going down.”
~*~*~*~
Amaya stared out at the setting sun, her guitar in hand as she played with the strings. Spike was arguing with Vicious about… something. Faye and Sith, strangely enough, got along rather well. ‘Odd, very odd.’ Amaya thought as she began to play a song coming to her lips.
“And it\'s been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it\'s been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it\'s been awhile
Since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it\'s been awhile
Since I could call you
And everything I can\'t remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that I\'ve rendered
I\'ve stretched myself beyond my means
And it\'s been awhile
Since I can say that I wasn\'t addicted
And it\'s been awhile
Since I can say I love myself as well
And it\'s been awhile
Since I\'ve gone and fucked things up just like I always do
And it\'s been awhile
But all that shit seems to disappear when I\'m with you
And everything I can\'t remember
As fucked up as it all may seem
The consequences that I\'ve rendered
I\'ve gone and fucked things up again
Why must I feel this way?
Just make this go away
Just one more peaceful day!
And it\'s been awhile
Since I could look at myself straight
And it\'s been awhile
Since I said I\'m sorry
And it\'s been awhile
Since I\'ve seen the way the candle lights your face
And it\'s been awhile
But I can still remember just the way you taste
And everything I can\'t remember
As fucked up as it all may seem to be I know it\'s me
I cannot blame this on my father
He did the best he could for me
And it\'s been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it\'s been awhile
Since I said I\'m sorry.”
Amaya sighed and let the silence ring around her. Nothing seemed to penetrate that moment, not the sounds of the city around her, nor the sound of footsteps on the fire escape. Not the flash of mossy hair, or the sight of sympathetic brown eyes as they glanced at the red head that had followed him.
“Didn’t know you could play that thing, let alone sing,” Spike’s voice finally brought her back into the world of the real.
Amaya spun quickly, her grey eyes wide as she caught Sith and Spike watching her. “What the hell!”
“You’re losing your touch, you didn’t even sense us,” Spike teased as he lit up a cigarette.
Sith scowled and grabbed the small, white stick, tossing it over the ledge. “Don’t think so. If I can’t, neither are you.”
Spike scowled at the red head. “Pregy may makes you irritable, you know that?” he grumbl
“
“You sound like Vicious,” Sith snorted.
Spike stopped. Amaya snickered. \"That’s one way to shut him up. What the hell are you two doing here, anyways?” she asked.
“Wraith is missing. Where is he?” Sith asked.
“How the fuck should I know?” Amaya countered.
“He’s your boyfriend.” Sith’s logic dazzled.
“He’s your brother, your point? I’m not his keeper.”
“Wait… Wraith is your brother?” Spike asked Sith.
Sith glared at Amaya and nodded. “Half-brother. But its not a publicly known thing.”
“Neither is my musical hobby,” Amaya shot back.
Sith rolled her eyes. Amaya could be so childish sometimes. “Do you have any idea as to where he is?”
Amaya shook her head. “No and I’m worried about him.”
Spike sighed and turned from the girls. “I’ll go tell his coldness that you have no idea as to Wraith’s whereabouts.”
“Spike, stop calling him that,” Amaya ordered.
“Fine, I’ll call him Icicle,” he shot as he climbed down the ladder towards the apartment.

Levii: Sigh, had to lighten the mood a bit. Plus, I\'m trying to bring in more of the other Bebop characters into the story. They felt left out. Ah, well. Spike and Sith are funny together, ne? It took me a bit to find the right song for this fic, I knew I wanted to use one, I just couldn\'t find one that fit what Amaya was feeling. Then I stumbled upon Staind and I was like, Whoo hoo it\'s perfect! Anyways, review!
