Diagnosis, Prognosis and the Risks

Chapter Twenty-two: Diagnosis, Prognosis and the Risks

Kyo\'s POV

Thursday came and went, we had gone to the hospital, had tests run. Saki had also had an appointment that week and steps were being taken to prepare her for insemination. Things were being settled and Hatori had prescribed something for Yuki\'s headaches while we awaited the test results. The tests were inconclusive and more tests needed to be run. I managed to talk to the man in the lab about DNA and such while I waited for Yuki\'s latest test results. It had been a long wait and I had made friends by the time the tests were complete. These tests and a brain scan would take a while to produce results, so we went home. Two days later Hatori called and wanted to meet us and go over the test results.

We were nervously waiting for Hatori to sit down and talk to us. I don\'t remember ever seeing him pace like this. Ayame was there also, which was odd, but not completely unbelievable given their relationship and that Yuki was his little brother. Finally, Hatori stopped and when he looked our way, the expression on his face had Yuki squeezing my hand in fear.

\"Yuki, Kyo. I don\'t know how to begin. The tests show a problem. I . . . . .\" He turned to Ayame for support. The snake nodded seriously for one of the first times we had ever seen. \"I . . . I\'m afraid it is a tumor. A brain tumor. It is operable, but it\'s risky. There is a chance that the surgery could go wrong, and then . . . . well, if you survived it could leave you blind. If you don\'t have the surgery, you probably won\'t last a year. The choice is yours, but I am suggesting that you have the surgery. I know a specialist.\" I cringed at the idea, and Yuki leaned against me for support. I had to hold up for him, he needed me more than ever, and I would be strong enough for him.

\"What are the chances, Ha-san? I need to know.\" Yuki asked our cousin.

\"I believe in the doctor, I would say you have a 70% chance of survival, and the chances of blindness, are only about 50%, but death is imminent without surgery, and the headaches will get steadily worse. I would hate to see you go through that, and we all want you to get better. What do you say?\" Hatori seemed deeply concerned. Ayame leaped up and knelt at Yuki\'s feet.

\"Otouto, please say you\'ll have the surgery. I couldn\'t bear it, make him do it Kyo.\" Ayame begged. I looked down at him helplessly. What could I do? I loved Yuki, but it was his decision. He turned to me, and pulled me to face him.

\"What should I do? Can I live without looking at this face? But I don\'t want to leave you.\" I swallowed the lump that threatened to asphyxiate me. I opened my mouth to speak and found the words were trapped behind my fears. I looked deep into violet eyes so full of need, I could never deny them.

\"I don\'t want to lose you. Please stay with me, I could be your eyes, but I could never live without you.\" I pulled him to me, \"And the boys need their Okaasan, please Yukito don\'t go from us!\" tears streamed down my cheeks and my chest constricted with the sobs that I would not be able to hold back much longer. Yuki shook violently as he released his fears into my shoulder.

\"I\'m scared Kyo, I\'m scared. Don\'t let me go, please, don\'t ever let me go!\"
