tighter now

Still no own, sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this story but now the plot has unravelled itself in my mind and I can make progress

The day began like most others, Walter sifting through reports, his eyes focusing on the words that flickered across the screen. His mind pulling the key bits of information, a habit of long years, carefully filing them away.

‘They come angel of death’. Alucard’s voice rang in low tones against the old stones. Walter nodded and rose, his three vampire charges tucked securely in the lower levels, far from the harsh light of day and the Vatican hounds were sniffing at the door.

“Bloody wonderful” he muttered as he paced the corridor to the tall double door. All around him he felt the power of Alucard’s shadows seep into the cracks of the stones. His many eyes vigilant, even in his repose.

It was one of the things that Walter had always admired about him. His devotion to Integra had long ago endeared the blood sucking fiend in the butler’s eyes. For in his many cruel pursuits, there was nothing that Alucard sought with more fervor than Integra’s safety.

He opened the large door and looked down his nose at the visitors before bowing politely. “May I help you sirs?” he asked, his tone clipped yet civil. The Italians shifted on the stoop, two in the garments of priests, one more richly dressed. This was the one to watch.

He stepped forward, “I am Demitri Fornaio. Enrico Maxwell sends his regards” he drolled, extending a message bearing his master’s seal, “It may perhaps be presumptuous of him, but he wishes to extend his hospitalities to the most formidable Sir Hellsing”.

Walter was sorely tempted to kick him from the doorway, but he took the letter nonetheless, “Thank you for coming, I shall relay your eloquent words to Sir Hellsing upon her return” he replied. His words clearly caught the unwanted guests off guard. “Return?”

Walter glanced at the glaring sun. No doubt they had expected her to be hiding from the light. Walter nodded smugly, “Yes, she and one of her senior officers have gone into the city proper for the day. She has never been to Rome you understand and wishes to get a feel of the city before operations commence”.

Demitri was quick to school his features, “I don’t suppose you know where she plans to visit?” he pressed. Walter snorted lightly, “I should say not Sir, I am after all, a butler”. His tone was properly appalled and the Italian seemed to take the bait. He bowed low and smiled, “Please tell Sir Hellsing that I do hope she enjoys her time in our fair city”.

Walter nodded, “I shall indeed”. He watched as the small group turned and headed down the drive to enter the sleek black cars and pull away. “Pompous pig” Walter groused. Alucard’s soft chuckle sounded near his ear, “They call that charm in this country Walter”.

Once more Walter sniffed indignantly and shut the door, “Makes my skin crawl” he muttered. Alucard’s mirth rubbed him the wrong way, “Must you find so much amusement in them?” he demanded, tossing the letter onto Integra’s shining desk.

Alucard laughed even more, “Of course angel of death, for they seek to challenge me and mine. You of all people know that I will never allow such transgressions to go unpunished”. His dark tone soothed the ruffled butler, “Well I should hope so”.

Maxwell sat behind his ornate desk, fingers steepled before his face. His eyes narrowed, “You are certain that he said she was in the city?” he asked again. Demitri nodded, “Yes, most certain”.

Maxwell slammed his fist onto the desk, “Who do they think they are fooling?” he thundered to no one in particular, “She has become the very thing she should have been killing”. He seemed to calm himself a moment later, then grinned maliciously, “Send men to find the truth”.

Demitri cleared his throat, “I did sir” he said, “I sent several patrols into the city to find her”. Maxwell grunted, “And?” Demitri reached into his jacket front and withdrew a photograph, “Is this your Integra Hellsing?”

Maxwell’s eyes took in the pale hair, the tailored suit, and the gloved hands. While the black and white photo did not show her entire face, her profile was unmistakable. His eyes narrowed on the beauty in the photograph. “Leave me!” he snapped.

Demitri nodded and turned leaving Maxwell to fume over the evidence of his nemesis’ humanity. Demitri squinted against the sunlight streaming in through the high windows, he was damned tired. Nodding to passing clerics, he made his way to the stone steps leading to the higher floors, to his room.

“I thought you said she was nosferatu!” Maxwell shouted at the company of men before him, “If that is so, then what is this?”. He held the photo aloft, a collective sound rising from them. “Impossible” some whispered.

Maxwell growled his frustration, “She may have been bitten in the attack but she was not changed!” he snapped, “It has happened before, she is very cautious. This will damage our credibility among the others”.

He paced the priceless carpets before the high bank of windows, “This is must be corrected” he muttered, “Find out where the vampire Alucard is. He is never far from her side, if they can be separated for any length of time, I want no mistakes. I want that bitch dead”.
