Chapter 27: Just Like Old Times

She sat before the crowd, the smoky contents of the bar, making them all look the same. She took in a deep breath, her fingers over the strings of her old, worn guitar. The song came up from within and she began to strum, singing out all her feelings for those she loved.
“I hope I’m not too late
I hope that you’re okay
I left in a hurry
As soon as they told me
So I prayed for you
Hang on till tomorrow
Just don’t leave me today
I’m coming home to you

Should’ve been there, I wanted to
Should’ve been there right next to you
Should’ve been there to comfort you
Should’ve been there to sing to you
Should’ve been there to hold your hand
Should’ve been there to be with you
After all that we’ve been through

Yes it’s hard to say goodbye
And what I wish right now is to somehow turn back time
With all the love
And respect
That I hold right here for you
Hang on till tomorrow
Just don’t leave me here today
I’m coming home to you

Should’ve been there, I wanted to
Should’ve been there right next to you
Should’ve been there to comfort you
Should’ve been there to sing to you
Should’ve been there to hold your hand
Should’ve been there to be with you

After all that we’ve been through.”

The bar rang with silence as her audience gazed at her. She then nodded and thanked them before standing and taking her instrument offstage. She then paused as the room filled with the sounds of applause. She smiled slightly and took a seat at the bar, ordering a beer and turned to where another stood at the stage, ready to perform for the room.

“Who were you singing to?” a voice asked from behind her.

Amaya turned sharply, her eyes wide as she recognized the man before her. “Spike!”

“Hey,” he greeted. “Vicious was getting on my nerves so I went wandering off. I met James, he’s a nice guy.”

Amaya nodded. “He is that.”

Spike snorted and shook his head. “You’re different.”

“I’m whole,” she said, she knew he’d understand.

“So, she’s gone?”

“Yeah, she’s where she should be.”

“Good, I was kinda worried about you there.”

She smiled and shook her head. “The day you stop worrying about my mental health, is the day I’ll finally go insane.”

“Then I won’t stop worrying.”

Amaya nodded. “Sounds like a deal to me. So, how is he?”

“Right to business, aren’t you?”

“Spike…” she warned.

“Just kidding. He’s good. He’s got three adults and a four year old doting over him. He’s being suffocated with concern.”

Amaya laughed. “I see. That’s good.”

“She’s pissed that you didn’t stay.”

“Who?”

“You know who,” he said.

“Sith… I can’t talk to her right now. I’m not ready. I’ve lied so much you guys. I’m surprised you all don’t hate me. I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t shoot me when she sees me.”

“Vicious and I forgive you. We understand you had a hell of a lot of pressure from the Van back then. And you haven’t really been all there as of late too.”

“Vicious doesn’t want to kill me?”

“Oh, he’s mad, I’ll tell you that much. But he could never kill you. Anyways, you’ve never actually lied to me. You never could.”

Amaya frowned. “I hate it when you’re right. I’m sure they love that.”

Spike chuckled. “Are you kidding? Do you think I’d tell them that? I’d like to keep my balls, thank you very much!” he laughed.

Amaya shook her head. “As eloquent as ever, Spike.”

“I have my moments. You going back up?” He asked.

Amaya nodded. “Yeah,” she said as she stood and headed back for the stage. She was greeted by cheers from the audience as she took her seat and looked over to her old friend. She then winked at the gangly, mossy haired man and began to strum the taut strings of the guitar. The room was soon filled with the sounds of her voice and her guitar as Spike watched on.
“I’m so tired of being here
Supressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
Because you’re presence still lingers here
And it won’t leave me alone,”

She was indeed, a different person, no, not different, she was herself. She was a grown up version of Marissa, a girl who’d seen it all, gotten hurt along the way, even broken for a long time, but now she was herself again. That woman what Only he and Vicious had ever really known. A woman that Sith should have known.

“These wounds won’t seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There’s just to much that time cannot erase,”

He knew why Mao had bid for her all those years ago, it was the same reason that he’d been bought. Had things been different, would have Sith been different? Would he have turned out like her had Mao never gotten a hold of him? He sighed and then plastered on a smile for the woman on stage, she didn’t need to see what he was thinking of.

“When you cried I wiped away all of your tears
When you’d scream I’d fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me,”

Kate… she probably didn’t remember him from all that time ago, when they were children. He had lived nearby, his bastard of a father a friend of hers.

“You used to captivate me
By your resonating light
But now I’m bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me,”

He recalled playing with Kate in the streets once, before Mao had bought him. He remembered her laughter as she tackled him to the ground and play-fought with him. But, of course, it had just been their way of keeping one another in shape to survive the place they lived in.
“These wounds won’t seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There’s just to much that time cannot erase

When you cried I wiped away all of your tears
When you’d scream I’d fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me,”

As he wondered on the red haired woman he sighed and shook his head. She probably didn’t remember him.

“I’ve tried so hard to tell myself that you’re gone
And though you’re still with me
I’ve been alone all along!”

He shook himself from such thoughts and turned back to his friend on stage as she finished her set.

“When you cried I wiped away all of your tears
When y scr scream I’d fight away all of your fears
I you your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me.”

He applauded with the rest of the audience as she stood and walked back over to him, a small smile on her face. ‘Man, she looks beautiful when she’s happy,’ he sighed mentally.

They sat for a while, in a companionable silence. Each consumed by their own thoughts, until someone inurrupted them.

“You both look pathetic,” a deep, cool voice stated.
aya aya turned to the voice and shrugged. “That’s ‘cause we are.”

Vicious glared at Spike. “This is the important business you needed to attend to?”

Spike grinned. “Yup!”

“Why are you here?” Amaya asked.

“Faye and Sith kicked me out.”

Amaya and Spike snickered.

“It’s not funny.” The pair looked to one another and then burst into a round of laughter. Vicious glared coldly at the pair before taking a seat beside Amaya. “Why’d you leave?” he asked.

Amaya rolled her eyes as her laughter died down. “I like my lungs.”

Vicious raised an eyebrow. “She wouldn’t have ripped your lungs out.”

Amaya snorted. “Uh huh.”

Vicious shook his head. He felt like a teenager around these two. IT was then that he noticed Amaya’s eyes. She looked like she had before she’d become Eve. Like… Marissa. He smiled at that, earning a gasp from both of them. “What?”

“You’re smiling,” Amaya stated.

“Does it hurt? I know it’s been a long time,” Spike jabbed.

“Shut up, Spike,” he snapped.

“That was weak, Vicious,” Amaya commented.

Vicious ignored them and ordered a drink before shrugging at them. “I’m feeling drained. Having to spend time with both Faye and Sith, while taking care of James, it takes its toll.”

Spike nodded. “They are oddly friendly with one another. It’s scary.”

Amaya looked to the heavens and then sighed. “You two are a bunch of wimps.”

“I wouldn’t talk if I were you,” Spike teased.

“True, you’re the one that left,” Vicious added.

“What? Are you two ganging up on me? I needed time to sort things out, away from your guys. Believe me when I say that it was for your own good.”

“Kaishi?” Spike asked.

“She had a plan formed to kill you all once she had complete control. She was going to join Julia.”

Spike froze. “That would have been bad.”

Vicious snorted. “To say the least, but I think we could have handled it.”

Amaya shook her head. “No, I don’t think so. You two know how I fight, but yo nev never actually fought me, not really. The only real challenge would have been Sith. She’s the only one that I had not been able to fully analyze the technique she uses. You two would have been dead, same with Faye and anyone else that would have gotten in her way.”

Vicious shivered slightly. He’d seen her kill when Kaishi was in control. She’d been merciless and vindictive. He was secretly glad he didn’t have to face that.

The trio of friends sat there for a long time. Letting the presence of the others give them a sense of familiar comfort as they all let their own thoughts brew within their minds as they let the smoky room envelop them with the smell of stale cigarettes and beer.

Just like old times.

I gave ya the double song whammy today. I felt inspired. Not to mention it was perfect for Spike\'s reminicing. Hehehe... Natakamani doesn\'t know about this chapter. So she\'s just recieved a surprise! Especially for Sith\'s relationship with Spike. Muahahaha! I thought we could use a mellow sort of chapter after the last one. You know, lighten the mood before I get yelled at by Natakamani. Lol! While I go hide from my pal, you guys REVIEW and tell me your thoughts.
