N.G.Evangelion - When Angels Deserve to Die

Last Time: The Sixth Child met the First, Second, and Third. Stuff happened. Well, if you\'re reading this, you already read the second chapter, so you already know.

\"Ack?\" Jack replied, looking at the others for some help. Shinji stood up slowly, Touji dragging him as well. Rei sighed, and closed her book, slipping it into her satchel.

Kensuke stayed back with Rei. \"You think Misato would allow Touji and I in to watch?\" He asked, trying to get the blue haired girl to open up a little.

Rei looked at him slightly. \"perhaps...you should ask her first...like before, i think.\"

He nodded. \"Hm... What were you reading? It didn\'t look like any of our text books. Or was it something NERV related. If it was I\'ll shut up.\"

Asuka kicked open the door. \"A Death by Chocolate sundae please.\" She said quickly, trying to look \'cute\'.

Rei looked up at him again. \"it was...something i was given...by commander ikari...\" She fingered her satchel, the slightest hint of a smile on her face.

\"I see. Is it interesting?\" he asked. He was trying not to be rude, but it was rare to get Rei in a crowd. Let alone to get her to talk.

She was silent, the hinted smile still there for a moment longer.

\"I thought you said you were cutting back,\" a smooth, masculine-ish voice spoke up from behind them, as a shadow taller than any of them fell over the group.

She paused. \"Kaji...\" Her face turned red. \"It\'s a special occasion.\" She grinned turning to face him and latch onto his arm.

The older man smiled, as always, and looked them over, his green bangs falling over his forehead. \"I see you have a new friend,\" he commented, rubbing his slightly-scruffy chin with his free hand, the smile turning into an easy grin. Jack cocked an eyebrow at him, questioning.

\"He\'s the other Eva Pilot.\" She said, as if wanting Kaji gnorgnore him and pay attention to her.

Kensuke entered the shop. \"Doesn\'t she know he\'s too old for her?\" He whispered.

Jack had a slight grin on his face, and started whistling, raising up a fist, and making a slight jerking motion with it.

Asuka scowled at him, catching it.

Kensuke bit back a laugh not wanting her scowl focused on him.

Rei blinked her red eyes. \"i do not think she cares.\"

\"Rei, what would you like? My treat.\" Kensuke said with a grin.

Kaji just grinned a bit wider. \"Expressive, isn\'t he? Well, that\'s a sign of the Americans....they can never keep their opinions to themselves..\" He noted the scowl. \"Don\'t make that face...it could stick that way.\"

Touji, and even Shinji, were giggling under their palms, which they had slapped over their mouths.

\"But Kaji..... He\'s such a child.\" She nestled her head into his arm.

Kensuke rolled his eyes. \"At least he\'s not showing affection for an older man in public.\"

Rei blinked again. \"...something...with..peanuts..\"

\"Shut up you. I may be in Japan, but I am not Japanese.\" She looked up at Kaji. \"It\'s okay right Kaji?\" She stretched his name out and batted her eyes.

The man ran a hand through some of his hair, and pulled out a loose strand. \"It\'s fine with me...really.\"

\"Your ice cream ma\'am.\" The attendant said biting back his own laughter.

Jack whispered, \"Is this normal?\"

Asuka pulled her coin purse out of her bag and paid for it. \"Kaji? Want to help me with this?\" She asked.

Kensuke nodded. \"Most of the time we go along with what she says because it\'s easier that way.\" He whispered pushing his glasses back up on his nose. He walked over to the ice cream case and picked out one for himself and one for Rei.

He blinked at her, and nodded. \"Sure...I was going to get one anyway...this way\'s cheaper for me, right?\" There was a chuckle in his voice, and he winked at her. Jack rolled his eyes, and made his order, followed by Shinji and Touji.

Asuka found a table for two for herself and Kaji.

\"Here, Ayanami-san.\" Kensuke handed her an ice cream cone. \"I hope it\'s okay.\"

Touji wanted the giant multi-flavored one, and Shinji went with a simple vanilla cone. Jack, being American, went for the first thing with coffee in the name, grinning broadly. Rei looked at it, and nodded slightly. \"it is fine. tha-thank...you...\" The words came hard, and felt odd to be spoken again.

Kensuki nodded finding a large table for the rest of the group.

Kaji sat, slouching slightly. \"So, have fun at your first day of school?\" he asked, reaching for a spoon carefully. \"And did you get there on time?\"


\"I was a little late because of Ikari.\" She sighed. \"You could have dropped me off at school you know.\"

Shinji had to help Touji not make a mess with his, and sat down carefully, sighing. \"It feels kinda nice...not being under pressure...\" he said softly as Jack sat down, looking for all the world like a man with a head of fire.

Kensuke nodded catching a drip from his cone. \"Ayanami-san, you\'re about to drip.\"

Kaji gave a little sigh himself. \"Well, I would have...but I had to take care of something for Commander Ikari, as always...\" He made a face, and smiled again, spooning up some of the ice cream and putting it in his mouth, one eyebrow raised. \"Sure you have enough chocolate on this thing?\"

Rei looked at it, and licked it slowly, her tongue catching the white drop with ease. Needless to say, most of the male population stared at her with slightly red faces.

\"These aren\'t as good as the ones I\'d get in Germany... but yeah, it\'s got enough chocolate. You know I burn it all off while in those training sessions. Wish they\'d let us stop for a snack once and a while during the weekend training.\"

Kaji wore a knowing smile. \"Well, it\'s better than...say...a complete diet of freeze-dried food?\" His eyes twinkled, as he ate some more of it.

Kensuke pulled his gaze from her. /I\'m not falling for her unless Ikari doesn\'t want her.../ He thought looking to his friend. \"So, are we meeting later to work on our homework for lit?\"

Asuka nodded, taking another bite of the sundae.

Rei nodded. \"hai. we have to get the assignment done soon.\" She licked at the cone again, and at least two of the chairs at the table made a scuffing sound as the shifted. Shinji blinked, some ice cream on his face, and saw both Jack and Touji whistling innocently.

Kensuke handed Shinji a napkin without saying anything.

Kaji pulled out a napkin, and smiled. \"You\'ve got some on your face..\" He moved his hand in, and wiped off the excess chocolate slowly, pressing the tissue against the are around her lips.

Shinji took it, and blinked, not understanding, until Jack made the universal \'you\'ve got stuff on your face\' gesture.

Asuka\'s eyes closed slightly. She fought to keep her breathing the same.

Kensuke chuc lig lightly.

Kaji cleaned it off, still smiling that smile of his, and tilted his head at her. \"I thought I\'d get it for you,\" he said, running it over her lips.

\"Thank you.\" She whispered softly.

Jack made the hand gesture again, this time using his body to hide it from Asuka, much to the delight of Touji, who was halfway through his cone already. Shinji wiped his face, and sighed at the two boys.

Kensuke snickered more. \"You guys are going to get me glared at...\" He whispered.

Asuka looked at the table where the others were, glaring at them lightly.

\"It\'s no problem....really.\" He ran it along the bottom of her lip, and winked. \"All clean.\" He pulled it away, and rolled it up into a small ball, tucking it into his pocket.

Rei ignored the antics, and the glare, still licking at her ice cream slowly. Shinji coughed, trying to break the tension. Touji blinked, and accidentally spilled some of the melting mess on Rei\'s blouse.

\"Touji, you clutz.\" Kensuke face faulted.

Shinji sweatdropped, laughing nervously. Jack blinked, then grinned, and raised what was left of his mocha-flavored cone to hurl at Kaji.

Asuka shifted to be closer to Kaji, noq in the direct path of the flying object.

Kaji caught the motion, and with fast reflexes, used the tray on the table to block the projectile, which made a wet splat. Of course, in doing so, he had leaned right up until his face was a hairbreadth\'s away from Asuka\'s.

Asuka heard the splat and looked up at Kaji, her eyes showing admiration.

Kensuke lost it, hiding his face in his cone before his snickers got too out of hand.

Rei blinked at Kensuke. \"you\'ve made a mess...all over your face.\" She pointed, pressing one pale digit to his cheek, wiping off some ice cream with her fingertip.

He flushed. \"Ne... Arigatou.\" He muttered reaching for the napkins to clean his face off. \"You should clean up the mess on your shirt before it stains.\"

Kaji looked down at her with a lopsided smile. \"It would\'ve made a mess in your hair...we wouldn\'t want that, now would we?\" He carefully moved it out of the way, dumping the mess in a trashcan behind him.

Rei blinked. \"it is only a shirt...i have more of them.\" Jack rolled his eyes, and took some of the napkins, brushing at the mess himself, muttering about how childish they were, despite having been the one to throw his ice cream.

She nodded then turned to glare at the one she figured would have done it.

Jack returned the glare with a mock-pout, then slipped on some of the spill on the table, sending them all crashing into a heap.

\"Ow.\" Kensuke muttered as he tried to reach for his glasses.

Touji shifted, then got an extremely red blush. \"Ah...Ken..don\'t move...\"

\"You know, when you guys grow up, maybe I\'ll keep to the challenge.\" Asuka said with a glare. \"Kaji, can we go for a walk in the park?\"

Shinji blinked, and went a deep crimson himself. \"Ah...I\'d go with Touji on this one..\"

\"I\'m not moving... No one step on my glasses okay? Mom\'s already pissed that this is my third pair this week alone.\"

Jack made a small groan.

Rei blinked. \"who has their hand...on my...?\" she asked quietly, staring up at the roof.

He heard the moan and Shinji\'s comment and turned beat red. \"Gomen Ayanami... I didn\'t mean it...\"

Kaji smiled, and laughed lightly. \"I think it\'s just a case of using too much polish on the tables...\" He looked down at Asuka, sliding back in his seat, then standing back up. \"Well, if you\'re not too busy...I\'d love to escort you through the scenic beauty.\"

She nodded, taking his arm.

Rei looked up at the roof still. \"i don\'t mind..but would you move your hand please?\" Her voice was soft, almost weak. Jack rolled over on his back, and bumped into Touji and Shinji, who both sweatdropped mightily.

Kaji placed a hand on her slender arm, and pushed open the door to the parlor with his rear end, still smiling. \"Besides, you\'ll have plenty of time to get back to what you were going to do...it\'s still early yet, and Misato and the others are still busy getting some of the system repairs done..\"

Kensuke moves has hand, placing it on the floor by her side in order to push himself up. \"I really am sorry, Ayanami-san. I didn\'t mean to....\" His face was bright red. He looked for his glasses wishing his eyes weren\'t so bad.

Asuka nodded. \'The rest of you better be there by the time they\'re ready for us.\"

She moved her hand, and picked them up without looking, taking them and pressing them into his other hand. \"here...\"

\"Domo..\" He said as he put them on. He had a very faint impish grin on his face.

Shinji and Touji helped Jack up, and sighed. \"Oi...\" the red-head commented at the mess. \"I can see us paying for this...I really can...\"

\"you are welcome.\" She sat up, and looked down at the mess that had almost covered her completely. \"someone...help me up..\"

Kensuke righted the table standing. The attendant walked over. \"Are you guys okay?\"

Kensuklpedlped her stand.

Kaji led Asuka away, still grinning. \"Don\'t be too hard on them...they\'re at an awkward stage in their lives...I remember when I was like that...\"

\"We\'re fine,\" Shinji spoke up, brushing away some mess from Jack\'s face with a napkin. The American was slightly off-kilter, so he and Touji still had to hold him up.

Rei brushed at her skirt, fixing it in place. \"thank you, kensuke-kun...\" she said quietly.

The attendant nodded. \"It\'s okay. I\'ll clean up the mess if you want to escort your friend home so she can get cleaned up.”

Asuka huffed slightly but nodded.

Shinji nodded, smiling slightly. \"Thank you...hey, we don\'t even know where Jack lives...\" he said lamely.
Kensuke grinned, knowing but not telling.

Kaji patted her arm. \"Don\'t be so tense...you won\'t get along with people that well if all you\'re always so...huffy..\" He moved the hand on her arm up slightly, rubbing the spot below her shoulder.

Touji blinked. \"Well, we could take him to your place, Shinji...see if Misato\'s home..\" There was a light flush on the boy\'s face, and Jack gave him a look.

She rested her head on his arm. \"I\'ll try.\"

\"Hormones...\" he muttered, before talking about ducks and squeeze-it-cheese.

Kensuke snickered. \"Misato\'s so cool. I\'m still trying to figure out how you lucked out with her as a roommate, Shinji.\"

Kaji nodded, loosening his already-slack tie some more, the smell of light cologne and bathwash rising up from him. \"You haven\'t commented on my new cologne yet...I was waiting to see if you\'d notice the change from that musky old stuff I had before.\"

Shinji went a burning red. \"Hey, con...n...it\'s not like that, and you know it...\" He coughed nervously.

\"I liked the old stuff. But this one\'s nice too.\"

Kensuke nodded. \"Sure.....\"

Kaji shrugged. \"Well, I wanted to try something new...but if it\'s not as..good as the old one, I want you to tell me...you know I appreciate honesty.\" He looked around, and saw they were near the park. \"Hey, we\'re almost there..\"

She nodded. \"It\'s just different. I like it though.”

Shinji went another shade of brilliant red. \"Kensuke!\" he said, embarrassed at the scrutiny into his personal life.

\"Okay, okay.\" Kensuke smiled. He slipped out of his jacket, which had managed to stay clean. \"Here, Ayanami, it should help a little…I mean your blouse is trashed.\"

Kaji smiled down at her as they entered the park. \"So, why did you want to come here? Interested in the native vegetation? A school project? Looking for a place to take a boyfriend?\"

\"You know I\'m not interested in any boys, Kaji. They\'re all immature.\"

Rei took it, and slipped it on carefully. \"thank you...\" She\'d already said it three times in less than an hour...

The older man let out a slight laugh. \"Really? Well, it didn\'t seem that way when I saw with the new kid...\" He teased her, a slight smirk on his face.

Touji rolled his eyes. \"Are we going or what?\" he asked, impatient and started to jog in place.

\"He\'s a challenge... and said he was a better pilot than I am.\"

Kensuke nodded to Touji.

Kaji lowered one eyebrow conspiratorally. \"Oh? Well, that remains to be seen...but did you have to drag him all the way from school?\"

\"FINALLY!\" Touji and Shinji carried Jack out through the doors, and the taller boy smiled. \"NEXT STOP - Misato-san\'s!\" Jack rolled his eyes, and said something about snails - giant ones.

\"I didn\'t drag him that far. Besides... I have to keep an eye on him... I mean if he is better... I have to figure out how to beat him.\"

Kaji nodded, and looked around them. \"Well, that\'s all well and good. So, you don\'t like boys, huh? I thought you\'d changed your mind after what happened on the trip over..\"

\"All Shinji did when wee were fighting the angel was try to grope me. Sexist pig... He\'s so barbarish... not like you, my dear sweet Kaji.\"

Kaji raised an eyebrow at her. \"And yet I was a boy once...does that mean you don\'t like me?\" Again, he was teasing her, waiting to see what she\'d say next.

\"You\'re not a boy now, Kaji.\" She smiled at him. \"And I doubt you were like him.\"

Rei followed them, looking ahead. \"i think he has gone delirious..\"

Kensuke snickered. “He\'s just love struck. It\'s a pity though; I heard that the class Rep has a crush on him.\"

Kaji brushed some of his hair out of his expressive eyes. \"I guess everyone\'s entitled to their own opinions...I like to think I was a bit of a hellraiser.\"

Asuka gave a surprised gasp at that. \"No, you couldn\'t have been.\"

Rei didn\'t respond, though her eyebrows lifted slightly, before settling back down.

He laughed again. \"We can\'t all be innocent, Asuka...\" He placed his cool palm against the side of her face slowing as they passed the trees.

\"I know... It\'s fun to think we are though.\" She smiled at him.

Kaji looked down at her, smiling back. \"Yes, it is...so, do you think you can get along with everyone here? It\'s going to be your new home, after all.\" He stopped walking, still smiling. \"And I\'ll be staying around for a while yet....I\'ve been temporarily assigned to NERV home office.\"

\"I\'ll try, but just for you, okay Kaji?\"

He smiled at her. \"That\'s fine.\" He brushed her bangs away from her eyes, so he could look into her eyes. \"And try not to cause too much trouble. I don\'t think the others would take it.\"

She sighed. \"Alright... I\'ll stop picking on Wondergirl and Third Child.\"

Kaji smiled at her. \"See? That\'s not so hard, is it?\" He leaned down, and kissed her lightly on the forehead.

She smiled at the kiss.

\"So....what now? Shall we continue our walk? Or head back?\" He looked down at her, and raised one green eyebrow at her.

\"Let\'s continue our walk. I need some time with an adult that understands me for a while.\"

He nodded. \"Then let\'s continue..\" They started walking slowly, and Kaji began pointing out random things that caught his eye. \"Flowers....there are so many, each beautiful in their own way...don\'t agreagree?\"

She nodded letting him talk.

Kaji reached down, without slowing, and grabbed one of them, a white daisy. \"We don\'t see these much around here, youw...w...\" He looked over at it, smiling with one half of his mouth, before putting it in her hair.

She smiled.

Kensuke leaned against the wall in the apartment. \"She\'s not here.\"

\"Anyway, this is a present...consider it a welcome gift.\" Kaji grinned at her.

\"Domo.\" She smiled, remembering Kaji was Japanese.

Touji made a face, nearly dropping Jack to the floor. As it was, his head smacked into a wall rather loudly, making Shinji wince. \"Ow...\" he said for Jack.

\"I see you\'re picking up the language...that\'s good...and you\'re welcome...how do you say that in German again?\" He rubbed his chin again, laughing.

She muttered her reply softly, touching the flower lightly.

Kaji leaned against her, his ponytail brushing against her shoulder. \"So, I take it you don\'t get along with the other children?\"

\"Not really... They\'re so childish...I mean, I shouldn\'t be in school with them. I\'m already out of college...\"

He shrugged with one shoulder. \"I guess they want to get you used to being with the other Children, more than anything else...so I hope you\'re at least trying to pass.\"

\"It\'s easy work. But so boring...\"

He made another laughing sound. \"But? I know there\'s another reason, Asuka...\"

\"What?

She looked up confused at him.

He rolled his eyes. \"I know you can\'t read Japanese...remember? I WAS the one who taught you how to get the finer points of the language down after that \'incident\' before the others met up with us...remember?\"

She scowled. \"I\'m catching the hang of it though... And you promised not to say that in public..\" She whined softly.

He looked around. \"But there\'s no one else around, is there? Unless you\'d prefer to head back to my place with me so you don\'t have to worry about your image.\"

She sighed. \"We could, if you could help me with my kanji. The katakana and Hirogana I think I have.... But the Kanji\'s so hard...\"

He raised an eyebrow once more. \"Well, I\'ll see what I can do. I may be a bit rusty, after getting used to that German writing...\" He chuckled, and winked at her.

She nodded. \"Fine with me.\" She smiled.

\"Then it\'s a date.\" He fell silentn, wn, walking in silence before adding, \"I wonder how the others are getting along...\"

Shinji looked at Jack. \"Touji....I think you killed him...\" he said, poking him with one finger.

Touji freaked. \"Oh no oh no oh no....we killed him...we killed him...now we\'ll have to bury him outback...\"

Asuka looked at him. \"They\'re probably all at the apartment watching some stupid kids show.\"

Kensuke looked over. \"Jack-kun?\"

Kaji smiled slightly. \"As long as they don\'t kill each other.\"

\"No way... I\'d kill them first.\"

Jack was limp. Very limp. And unresponsive. \"Oh crap oh crap oh crap...\" Touji went on, until Rei slapped him across the face as hard as she could.

Kensuke walked over to him. \"Jack... come on...\" He shook him gently.

The green-haired man laughed. \"Well, don\'t be too hard on them...even though I have complete faith in you, an army of Angels isn\'t something you should face alone.\"

\"Hmph... We could do without Shinji though... all he does is mess up.\"

There was some slight response, and more muttering about snails...and Angels. A few odd words, not in any recognizable language, came from his lips, which continued moving in silence.

Kaji just shook his head, a weary smile on his face. \"Well, that\'s one opinion...but until the Commander decides, he stays.\"

\"Jack-kun... come on..\"

Asuka nodded then looked at her watch. \"I\'m going to be late.. They wanted me to do some tests..\"

Slowly, one blue eye cracked open, and a moan came from the slightly-parted lips. \"What...the Hell...just happened?\" he asked, his other eye slack, and slightly unresponsive.

Kaji sighed dramatically, and winked. \"Need a lift? I parked my car outside the ice cream parlor.\"

\"You sort of blacked out on us.”

Touji calmed down then, rubbing the red mark on his face. \"Why is it I\'M the one getting slapped across the face all the time?\" he grumbled.

\"Oh... could you Kaji?\"

Jack blinked, his hair sagging slightly, forming a more normal, spikey hairsyle for a moment, before he fixed it. \"Ow...my head...I remember....going ka-boom at the...icecream place...but after that...it\'s all a blur...a white blur...\" He blinked, both eyes opening now. \"I need painkillers....ow.\"

He nodded, smiling. \"Of course...it\'s my fault you\'re going to end up late if you walk, after all...it\'s the right thing to do, all things considered.\"

She hugged him tightly. \"Thank you!\"

Kaji let out a small gasp, and smiled down at her, patting her back. \"Don\'t crush me, Asuka...\" he teased, winking.

\"Sorry.\" She backed up.

He shrugged with one arm again. \"Oh, I don\'t mind it...just that you caught me a little off-guard...\" He tapped one of his temples, grinning. \"Anyway, let\'s get going...\"

Shinji nodded, and rushed off the the bathroom to see what he could find. Rei looked down at Jack, almost curiously.
