Chapter Three:

------------------------------------

The wind and snow made a makeshift curtain, through which nothing could be distinguished. Varying shades of grey and white filtered through each other as the wing stung at their eyes. And no sign of the pup.

Both Kiba and Tsume had remained near the cave's entrance, tense, searching for any sign of movement. Any sign the other wolf hadn't simply vanished into the storm. But that seemed precisely what he had done.

Inwardly, Tsume was cursing to himself. He'd -known- how tired Toboe was, how weak. He'd been right there, at his side! And he'd let him fall behind without notice...slip away...

Well, it wasn't as if he was on babysitting duty, here! Needed to stop thinking of the pup as his responsibility...he wasn't. He'd come of his own free will, hadn't he? He owed him nothing.

But try telling that to his concience.

With a growl, he slipped forward, past the white wolf, who almost started in surprise.

"Where...?"

"I'm going to find him," he replied curtly, and then, it was impossible to communicate further. The storm raged around him, the cold snow nipping relentlessly at him, like a swarm of persistant flies. He could hear nothing, now, except for the shrieking wind that stung against his ears, and that told him all he needed to know.

He was alone.

Now it -was- his responsibility.

Way to go, oh Rash One.

It was decidedly fortunate that Toboe’s coat was such a distinctive color…the reddish rust-colored fur would be easier to find in this blistering swirl of white than anything else. Of course, this was assuming one could keep their eyes open in face of an unrelenting wind that seemed determined to keep the pup’s loccation a secret.

Leave him behind, common sense dictated.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

That was probably the reason he –wasn’t- going to leave him behind, come to think of it.

Damn concience.

He paused, ducking low to the ground to avoid the cold chill of the wind for a moment. Thank Selene that he wasn’t a dog, and had the benefit of big paws that made treking through the snow significantly less of a challenge. His homeland had been quite snowy, most of the year and…

Stop it. Don’t think about back then. It’s pointless. Concentrate on recovering your breath and strength and finding that troublesome pup.

But he wasn’t quick enough to block the memories from resurfacing, and a swirl of homesickness settling in the pit of his stomach.

Yes. Yes he did miss it, sometimes. What self respecting wolf wouldn’t have? It was a gorgeous little valley at the foot of the mountains…no humans anywhere. One of the few forests that hadn’t been completely decimated, that still held a fair amount of game, a little lake that froze over at the edges. Life hadn’t been perfect there, but they had managed…the pack had all managed just fine. Rather large pack it had been, too, mostly family members and strays they’d taken in to protect.

Like him.

He’d been only a cub, himself, and if the situation hadn’t been so dire for the species, perhaps they simply would have ignored him.

But they didn’t. They took him in. And he…

Perfect.

Just what he needed.

Come on, Tsume, up and at them…you can angst about old times later.

It never really occurred to him how they were going to get back, if he found Toboe. In truth he wasn’t thinking that far ahead when he plunged into the snowstorm after him.

He wasn’t looking that far ahead, either.

Which was probably why, when the snow under his feet suddenly gave way, and he suddenly slipped under into a large depression in the ground, hidden by a drift that had reccently blown over, it took him off guard enough to destroy any chance he had of bounding out of there in a hurry.

And then the white gave way to a numbing dark.

It was comfortable enough…a soft bed of snow beneath his head, cushioning where it had struck rock on the way down and left quite a bump, and the cold creeping into his muscles was actually quite relaxing. He could very well just curl up and sleep here for a while. Yes…that sounded like a good idea. He hadn’t had much sleep the past few days, and his body was begging for…

Tsume.

Shut up, whoever’s there. I’m trying to rest.

Tsume…?

Leave me alone. Let me sleep, I’m tired…

“Tsume!”

The cold suddenly gave as something warm brushed his side. He felt the urge to brush it away, like a pesky fly, but he was feeling far too sluggish to do anything of the sort. The warmth didn’t leave of its own accord either, but nestled itself right in against him.

That scent was familiar, but the numb had extended even to his mind, and he couldn’t be bothered to consider what it meant.

Too tired to even open his eyes.

Sleep…if only for a little while.

//Laughter.//

Come on runt! Or else we’ll leave you behind!

Call me runt again! I dare you!

Awww, he’s so cute when he gets mad like that!

Shut up!

//Warmth. Bright eyes, laughing at him.//

They don’t mean it, they’re just teasing you.

Hmph.

C’mon, Tsume! Don’t be like that…hey! I’ll race you to the lake!

Hey! That’s not fair! Wait up!

//The sound of paws crunching through the snow, a pale grey form racing ahead of him.//

Catch me if you can!

//Tumbling through the snow…more laughter. Such a happy time…//

You’re pretty good, for just a pup.

Told you so.

That’s right…you did, didn’t you?

//Lick.//

Don’t worry too much about them, okay? I’ll look out for you.

I can handle myself just fine!

Suit yourself. But I’m not going to because you need it.

Why bother?

Because I like you.

Hmph.

//He laughed so much…was everything in life always so amusing to him?//

What’s so funny?

You. You act so old for just a pint-size.

You shouldn’t be so nice to me, you know. I’m an outsider…

I don’t care. I still like you anyway, Tsume…

//Nuzzle. So warm, he was…//

//I…I like you too.//

//He never told him that.//

//It was bad enough that it was so obvious anyway.//

Tsume…

I’ll look out for you.

Tsume…?

Not because you need it.

Not because I need to.

Tsume…

He unconciously shifted closer to the warmth at his side, sighing almost imperceptively at the warm nuzzle against his shoulder. The flip flop of a tail wagging gently bumped into his side, but it barely registered. The warmth was becoming far more comfortable than the cold, and just as easy to follow into sleep.
