CHAPTER 1
CHAPTER 1
\"To-san(1)!\" Shuichi yelled happily, running towards Junichiro.
Junichiro lifted his energetic son into the air, twirling him around before placing the pink haired boy on his shoulders. Shuichi shrieked with glee and held onto his father\'s head, one small hand covering his father\'s right eye.
\"Shuichi-kun, you\'re getting too big for your To-san...I\'m afraid starting tomorrow I will not be able to pick you up,\" Junichiro teasingly said.
\"No way! I\'m still small! I\'ll stop growing! I promise!\" Shuichi exclaimed, frightened that his father would no longer hold him.
\"I\'m teasing you, little one,\" Junichiro softly laughed. \"Come on, let’s go see what your mom is up to.\"
As the two figures made their way across the yard, a sudden loud noise could be heard coming from their front gate. Loud shouts preceded the noise and a scream could be heard. Junichiro quickly set Shuichi back down on the ground. \"Little one, go hide in your secret hiding spot and do not come out until I come get you.\" Junichiro grasped Shuichi\'s shoulders and stared at the little boy right into his violet eyes. \"Promise me!\"
\"Yes, To-san, I promise,\" Shuichi replied. He did not understand why his father looked so worried, but he felt scared hearing the desperation in his father\'s voice.
\"Now go!\" Junichiro hugged Shuichi and shoved the little boy away.
Shuichi ran towards his hiding spot, glancing over his shoulder to look at his father one more time. As fast as his legs could carry him, he ran towards the shed. Inside, he moved one of the boards and crawled underneath it. He fit himself in the little room that had been built as his secret place, the room that his father had built for him. He hid in the darkness, getting sleepy but unable to sleep due to the loud noises from outside. Shuichi had no idea how long he had been hiding. He was getting tired and hungry. A urge to cry came over the little three year old, but he refused to cry and continued to wait for his father.
Suddenly, the door to the shed opened, bringing in the red light from the setting sun. A dark silhouette limped in. The figure whispered hoarsely, \"Shuichi-kun? Are you in here?\"
As Shuichi recognized the voice, he pushed away the board covering the entrance to his hiding place. \"Ojisan(2)! I\'m here!\" Shuichi scrambled out and ran towards his uncle.
Haruki grabbed the little boy into a tight hug and started to cry. The bewildered boy tugged at his uncle\'s kimono. \"Ojisan? Why are you crying? Why are you sad?\"
\"I\'m so sorry, Shuichi,\" whispered Haruki. \"So very sorry. I\'ll take care of you. I owe Junichiro and Ikuko at least that much.\"
Shuichi tried to get out from his uncle’s hold. \"Where’s To-san? To-san said he was going to come get me.\"
Haruki was unable to look Shuichi in the eye. Instead, Haruki sat crossed legged on the ground and had Shuichi sit across from him. \"Shuichi,\" he slowly started, “some bad men came today. They were angry at your dad because your dad was such a good guy and he made them look bad. They got really mad and started to hurt people.\"
Shuichi’s violet eyes got wide. \"Did they hurt a lot of people? Are they badly hurt?\" He paused and his eyes got even wider. \"Did they hurt To-san?\"
\"I\'m so sorry Shuichi,\" said Haruki. Tears streamed down the older man\'s face. \"I\'m so sorry.\"
