// Summer Snow and True Lies //

Summary: Life is good for Hayate and Himeno. Their troubles are over and life had never been sweeter. Two years together, probably going to be married soon, in love... What could go wrong, right?... A love unspoken and one impulsive action on it, causing a chain of events that could possibly wake the Princess of Darkness once more is what.

Disclaimer: Not mine, never were, never will be. This plot is mine, and all made up characters which may or may not be seen are mine. Nothing else is mine. Nothing. Because I have nothing at all... Poor, poor me.

A/N: Thanks Kat for the review, your the only one I think that reads this, besides my girlfriend. -Glomps her- Anyway, without further interruption, another sad chapter. No Hayate/Sasame just yet, but I promise no more than two more chapters coming it is.

Chapter 3:
// Summer Snow and True Lies //

It was just a day, different than no other. Somehow, he thought something might change, what exactly? He did not know. Somehow he thought living, having your heart break would feel different. He found this was not the case as he slowly awoke, still arms curled tightly around his knees and head resting on the wall. The sunlight shone on him through the window, and he watched as the sun rose in the sky and knew...

Knew that this was not different because his heart had been broken for as long as he could remember... Maybe this was why he felt no different now than yesterday. He was tired, and everything hurt, and so cold. He did not shiver, in fact, he didn\'t move. He couldn\'t some how, some how it made the pain less real to just stay where he was. Not get up at all, not face the smiling \'friends\' and the happy look on Hayate\'s face. This brought him to a whole new level of the cold depression that settled over him.

Hayate was getting married, and there was nothing he could do. He was going to say he loved her forever, and he would. He would touch her gently and hold eyes only for her. He would stand beside her, hold her when she cried...And this made Sasame himself wish to cry. He had never known that warm feeling. Maybe, he had thought, back with Takako, that it was his knight\'s duty to focus on her... Maybe, maybe then if she had come to him he wouldn\'t be slowly dieing now.

He thought he was in love, oh yes. He tried in his best way to show her, while feeling guilty for betraying his duty to protect her impartially. Then he had done it. Hayate had captured the heart he thought he so sought after. He was jealous, but maybe that\'s where it started. That slow, bitter feeling that would creep up in the back of his mind, and the longing to be beside her... Or so he thought.

Yet, the more that happened, the more he realized it was not Takako at all. He... He felt devoted to her, and yes, he would die for her... This was not love. He didn\'t know what was, at the time, as Hayate continued his friendly manner. Those eyes, he remembered those, the warm blue eyes that could make him smile. Never had he to guess what his companion was feeling, he knew.

Somehow, out of that friendship... His heart yearned for more. Something like his want now for the warmth that eluded him, yet, it was diffuse. He did not know for what he wanted, or if he truly wanted anything that could be obtained at all. Then, it happened... Takako changed into the Princess of Disaster.

Afterwards... He could see it. The loss of light in those normally happy, sparkling eyes. The dark guilt that kept the man up at night, and the dreams. The horrible nightmares he would wake up with after she had been sealed, screaming and sweating, crying hard. Sasame had been the one to gently rock him through his tears, as he had clung to the white haired Knight. He had soothed him into sleep again, yet Sasame\'s own tears had never been soothed in the same way.

He didn\'t cry, they all thought it was imposable for him to cry. He had to be strong, for the others. For them all, because no matter what, he had to be alright. Had to make everyone alright. Maybe that\'s why he could understand Mawata so well. Maybe that was why he had tried to \'set her free\', because that was what he wanted for himself... And maybe, that seclusion from everyone is what finally gave him the distance to realize what would change his life forever... He was in love with Hayate.

That\'s what had disturbed him so much about his tears, the loss of the light that he held. Yes, that was what had troubled him. He had been jealous of Takako, not Hayate. Yet, through these realizations and his distance, he had managed to help Hayate still. He had managed to mostly stop the tears, he had managed to get a little of that smile back... He had managed to erase what pain from those beautiful eyes he could. He had gotten him as close to the old Hayate as he believed he would ever be... Then the seal was broken.

It was like all he had done, all his work to bring the old Hayate back was gone. Save, he didn\'t cry this time... That sad silence was almost more than he could bear, more disturbing then his tears, more disturbing than anything because it wasn\'t like him. And again, as time often did, it flew. To when they found Himeno.

Pretty, sweet, cute... How could he compete? How could he ever look at her and honestly think Hayate would ever look at him with her close. For a while he had clung to the desperate hope that Takako would have warned him from Pretears... He had been wrong. He kept it inside, and it hurt. He kept it inside until he was ready to break. *That night... He had been so weak. Hayate had been blushing, as was she.* He had never known him, even with Takako to do so. So tired of crying, of the pain... So alone...

That’s what had driven him to it, to beg Fenrir to allow him to join her. Maybe he wanted to see if Hayate would stop him, maybe he would have not gone through with it had it seemed Hayate cared /at all/... Yet, he just stood there. It wasn\'t as if he hadn\'t made himself clear, hanging around him always, comforting him, trying to help.. And all for naught, and he became one of Fenrir\'s puppets.

The battles with Hayate were not hard. He wanted to kill him, make him hurt as he had been hurt. Though, he had never killed him. ~He only once tried, and Fenrir had stopped him.~ Once he had calmed down, he realized what he had done, and so he no longer tried as hard. He could have killed him, several times... And he never did. ^He almost did once, yes. Only because he was protecting Himeno. He might not have attacked had he not been protecting her, seeming so determined to live for her, help her live.^

And so, life went on. The tree was destroyed, and all set right. He had died for his devotion to Takako, and come back. He tried to convince himself that he loved her, and almost had... Until the old Hayate returned full force. Those slow, happy smiles and expressive eyes. He fell for him hard again, and the last two years had been a living hell.

He supposed it had all built to this point from there, the moment where he saw them together. The moment where his hopes, his dreams... His soul shattered. He was nothing but cold, and in pain. His skin was pale, and freezing to the touch. His tears were chilled as they fell, starting in his remembrances, not yet seeming to stop as some mingled with the dried blood, cleaning away some of it. His eyes, he knew, would be just as cold as his body. Yet, he felt none of the cold, just a pleasant numbness that stopped the pain... He never even noticed when a knock sounded at the door, never even noticed it was Hayate\'s worried voice to call to him.

A/N:

* The stuff between the stars is talking about the night when he told Takako he wanted to give up being a Knight. Look at the scene just before with Hayate, Himeno, and Sasame. See them blushing and see Sasame blow up at them for it. I think someone\'s jealous... Just my opinion.

~ The stuff between the little liney things are when they battled, when Sasame destroyed the house they had made, Sasame and Hayate\'s first battle.

^ The stuff between the little up arrows is at the battle on the great tree Fenrir, where Hayate leaves Himeno\'s body to fight.

Just in case you wonders, it is from the Anime. Couldn\'t tell you episodes, I forget. Anyway, just a little back story on how this begun. The next chapter, or the one after, I will have Hayate/Sasame action. Tell me what you think of my back story. Thanks, as always, Read and Review.
