Crimson Wings
Chapter 2 – A New Ally
Justin woke up hours after Crimson Wings had knocked him out. He blinked as a bright light shone in his eyes as a paramedic checked him over to make sure he was ok. He convinced the paramedic that he was fine and got to his feet just as the chief walked into the room.
“Walker… what the hell happened? I thought you said you could catch that fucking wannabe Phantom Thief… Not only did he get away, but he got the best of you by knocking you out? What kind of Detective are you anyway?” Chief Saehara growled.
Justin sighed slightly as he began to explain how the infamous Crimson Wings attacked him from behind, knocking him out before he even had the chance to pull the trigger. Needless to say, Saehara wasn\'t happy about this turn of events.
…
Justin got home a half hour later and sat up for a while, eating dinner and waiting for the phone call from Crimson Wings. He was eager to learn all about these strange art pieces and the role this ‘child’ had in stopping them.
An hour past, however, and Justin still hadn’t gotten the call. Being as tired as he was after the incident, he decided to just turn in for the night and hope the other would call sometime in the morning or that, should he call tonight, he’d hear the phone ringing…
…
Daisuke, meanwhile, hadn’t forgotten about having to call the detective but when he had gotten home he was instantly given the third degree from his family due to a certain bullet hole in his shoulder...
\"How in the world did you get this? How could you be so reckless? How are we going to explain this to the doctors? How are we going to explain it to the school?\" his mother prattled on to the redhead\'s dismay...
\"Calm down Emiko... I\'ll deal with it,\" Daisuke\'s father said as he motioned for Daisuke to sit down on a chair at the table. He nodded and headed out of the room for a moment before coming back with something akin to a giant set of tweezers. Daisuke flinched slightly at the sight but stayed still as his father proceeded to remove the bullet, which was still lodged in his shoulder.
Daisuke had been through a lot over the past few years so the pain wasn\'t enough to cause him to do more then flinch and wince. Once it was out, his father wrapped his shoulder up with gauze and handed him his shirt, \"Make sure to keep it hidden... we don\'t need to have to explain how you got a bullet hole in your shoulder...\"
“Hai…” Daisuke replied before heading upstairs to his room, With following close behind. He sighed slightly before climbing up to his bed and plopping down on top of the covers, not bothering to get under them, as he drifted off into a much needed, and painless, sleep.
…
The next day was Justin’s day off, so he figured he\'d give Crimson Wings another day to call before deciding that the thief wasn’t going to.
Daisuke managed to grab the phone that morning when he woke up. He was glad it was the weekend so he didn\'t have to worry about going to school with his injury just yet. He dialled the number given to him by the officer the night before and sighed as it began to ring...
Justin was watching a TV show when he heard the phone ring rang. He smiled slightly as he grabbed for the phone and brought the receiver up to his ear to answer it, \"Justin Walker speaking…\"
\"Umm... it\'s me...\" Daisuke murmured, \"you wanted to know some information...\"
He nodded, recognising the boy’s voice, \"Yeah, I need to know what I can do to stop these possessions. It can\'t be good for you morally to steal, but at least now I understand why.\"
\"Here... take my address and come over here... we\'ll explain everything,\" he said calmly giving Justin his home address. He was sure deep down that this man could be trusted with their secret. He wasn’t sure how he knew but he did…
Justin nodded as he wrote the address down on a piece of paper and told the boy on the other end of the phone, \"See you in about an hour...\" before he hung up the phone and got ready to leave.
Daisuke sighed slightly as he put the phone down and headed up to his room, sitting down on his couch for a while. This man would have a lot of questions and he needed to piece the information in his own mind before starting to explain things... At least he’d have his family there to help though…
…
Justin came to the door of the Niwa house about an hour later and rang the doorbell before waiting patiently for Crimson Wings to answer.
Towa, the house \'help’, opened the door and smiled sweetly at Justin. Towa wasn’t only the house help but also the spirit of a piece of artwork, known as “The Eternal Mark”, which had been saved by Daisuke some time ago. She looked Justin over a moment before speaking, \"Well hello there... may I help you?\"
\"Who is it Towa-chan?\" Emiko asked as she walked up to the door, smiling at Justin as well though she was sure she’d never seen this man in her life. It was probably someone trying to sell them something again.
Justin nodded politely to the two women before speaking, \"Do you have a young man that lives here, red head, with a little white creature that goes KYU?\"
Towa chuckled slightly as she opened the door wider and backed up for him to enter. Emiko, meanwhile, walked up to the edge of the stairs and called up, \"Daisuke! Someone\'s here to see you...\"
\"Coming!\" Daisuke called back, grabbing With and heading downstairs. He nodded to Justin and turned to his mom, \"This is the guy who… ummm... shot me last night... we need to explain everything to him...\"
Emiko looked at Justin with an angry look for a moment then smiled, \"well... follow me into the family room...\" she said calmly leading him into the family room where Daiki, Daisuke\'s grandpa, and Kosuke, Daisuke\'s father, where already located. The two nodded to Justin as he, Emiko, Towa, Daisuke and With walked in and sat down.
\"Well now... so you want to know what\'s going on do you?\" Daiki asked calmly, looking the man over for a moment then smiling at him gently.
Justin nodded, just slightly unnerved by the looks he was being given, \"Yeah... I let the boy go cause some weird stuff is happening that even I know isn\'t right… but I need to know what’s happening so I can back him up…\"
\"Hmm... we\'ll... Kosuke... you seem best at explaining the artworks,\" Daiki said calmly.
Daisuke\'s father nodded calmly, \"you see... when a person creates a piece of art, the emotions they feel at the time are put into the art piece... those emotions will always be there... and as the piece moves on to be in the possession of others, their emotions also merge with the artwork... over time, these artworks often gain minds of their own... they become living things. Take Towa here for example,\" he said motioning over to the grey haired girl, \"She is the spirit of \'The Eternal Mark\' that Dark stole several years ago. However, when one of these artworks is created or held in the hands of those who are angry, or sad, or greedy... these works of art can become corrupted, even evil and dangerous. It is our job to seal away those with darkness and free those that are in pain and sorrow.\"
Justin nodded but lifted an eyebrow in curiosity, \"And how do you do that exactly?\"
\"Dark, or Daisuke now... have the ability to seal the artworks for a time... it doesn\'t last forever though... meaning that if the artworks aren\'t in our hands when they become unsealed, then they can become a hazard again,\" Daiki explained, \"Dark himself was part of an artwork... one half of the Hikari masterpiece known as The Black Wings. A horrid thing, very dangerous. But Dark himself, though he looked dangerous, had a good heart unlike his other half Krad who was evil. Dark took on the responsibility of sealing away the artworks till he was finally lost to us. Dark\'s spirit and power once ran through the veins of this family... the Niwa family legend. Now it is but the power left, the spirit lost to us in the battle five years ago when the town was evacuated.\"
Justin nodded, the story was almost unbelievable but after what had happened yesterday, he was sure he could believe anything, \"I see. I will do what I can to aid you and the boy in any was I can.\"
\"Anything you can do to keep the authorities off of Daisuke would be much appreciated... he might be skilled but he\'s not Dark... not anymore at least,\" Emiko chuckled slightly.
Justin nodded again before explaining, \"That shouldn’t be too much of a problem but as a detective, I\'ll have to make it at least look like I\'m at attempting to capture Crimson Wings.\"
\"Of course...\" Kosuke said calmly then glanced over at Daisuke. Truth was the boy had been distant since that day... since the day he lost Dark. He tried to mask it. Tried to hide his feelings and pretend that everything was alright but it wasn\'t. They could all tell the crimson eyed youth was lost... alone. Only seeming to come alive when on a mission...
At the moment, Daisuke was busy staring out the window, not really paying attention to the conversation. He knew his family would explain everything to this man so he needn\'t worry...
Justin looked at the boy after following Kosuke’s gaze and finally noticed the boy’s distant demeanour before he asked, \"Hey there, are you alright?\"
\"Hmm? Oh... sorry... did I zone out? I\'m fine really,\" the crimson eyed teen said plastering on a gentle smile. To those who knew him well enough, they could tell it was fake. His eyes never lied.
Justin watched the boy for another few seconds before he shook his head, letting it go for the moment, \"Well, I supposed I should head out now. It’s nearly dinner time… I hope to see you all again.”
\"Oh that\'s alright...\" Emiko smiled, \"Why don\'t you stay for diner... we usually have a big group anyway... Oh, Daisuke dear, wasn\'t Satoshi coming over for diner?\"
This name was likely one that Justin would recognise, him being with the police force and all. Satoshi Hiwatari, the young commander... former commander that is. After they\'d lost the two angels, Satoshi had resigned from the police force and continued to go through grade school with Daisuke, even though he was a university graduate.
“No… he said that he couldn’t cause something came up… probably something with Risa again…” Daisuke said calmly, “You can barely ever pry those two apart…”
Justin chuckled slightly as he said, \"I would love to stay for dinner,\" He then stood up and walked over to the youth before he slapped him on the back gently, being sure to avoid his injury, \"So, you know Satoshi huh? How is he doing anyway?\"
\"Ummm... Fine I guess...\" the other blinked then sighed. This guy was so… friendly… Even though Daisuke was a thief and a criminal, this man treated him like any other teenager.
He smiled and chuckled, hoping to liven the mood of the redhead just a little, \"He got my promotion once so I should smack him if I do ever see him again, but I guess he earned it. He’s a hard worker.\"
Daisuke plastered on another fake smile, \"I still don\'t know how they let him in the police force at 14... Kinda seems a bit weird to me. Not to mention what a pain he was. He was the only one I had to worry about when I did my work as Dark...\"
The brunette shrugged his shoulders, \"Who knows, he must be a genius I guess.\" He then looked around the house, \"You really do have a nice place here. My place looks like an earthquake hit it.\"
\"Sounds like you could use a woman in your life,\" the grey haired, Towa, chuckled with a smile, teasing the brunette detective...
The detective laughed at the grey haired girl, \"Maybe I could… Hnn… and what about you Daisuke? Would your room be a disaster area if your mom and lovely miss Towa didn\'t hound you?\"
\"I grew up being tidy... I\'m use to it,\" Daisuke said calmly, his attention wavering a bit as he gazed out the window again. He didn’t really see the need in participating in the current conversation anyway.
Justin nodded again, \"I see,\" he murmured as he watched the ‘boy’. This kid seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was so distant… like a lost little puppy that you wanted to take care of but that was too stubborn and afraid to let anyone near.
\"Well... I suppose we should start supper now... Towa?\" Emiko asked calmly and the grey haired girl nodded with a gently smile as she stood up and followed the older woman into the kitchen to start cooking.
Justin nodded at the woman before glancing over at Daisuke as he finally noticed, \"Say, your only what? 18-19? That means you’ve been stealing artworks since you were a kid. Am I right?\"
\"Since the day of my fourteenth birthday... that was the day Dark awoke inside me,\" Daisuke said calmly as he turned his attention back to the detective, the memories of that night and so many nights following it running through his mind as he added, \"I’ve been doing it ever since.\"
Said detective sighed slightly, \"Well that has to really suck. That’s a lot of responsibility you’ve got there… no one should have to deal with that, especially alone. But you seem to have a lot of support from your family… by the way, what will you be doing next?\"
\"Don\'t know until mom and grandpa find another piece of artwork that\'s been tainted,\" Daisuke said calmly, “they find them and I collect and seal them away.”
Justin nodded calmly before Daisuke turned his attention back to watching out the window while his father and grandfather just sat calmly, making small talk with the detective. It wasn\'t long before supper was served and everyone ate, talking and enjoying the meal and each other’s company...
Justin relaxed after he was finished eating and sighed contentedly. He commented after a moment, his attention turned to Emiko and Towa, \"That was delicious ladies. Thank you so very much for the meal…\"
\"Thank you,\" the two women said in unison as they smiled to him before Towa spoke up, \"I\'ll start the dishes,\" she said as she grabbed several dishes and headed towards the kitchen door…
\"Why don\'t I help you Towa,\" Kosuke offered calmly as he grabbed some more dishes and followed the grey haired woman into the kitchen and towards the sink… the sound of running water soon indicating that they’d started...
Justin sighed after a moment and turned to the crimson haired teen, “Well, it looks like it\'s getting a bit late. I better be getting home. Hey Daisuke… give me a call when something comes up. I’ll do what I can to help.\"
\"Uh... hnn... right,\" Daisuke said calmly with a nod. He wasn’t so sure he wanted this guy involved in his work. He didn’t need anyone else putting themselves in danger. He’d already lost dark and nearly lost several other friends…
Justin was soon saying his goodbyes and waving to Daisuke and the rest of the Niwa family before he headed out the door, glancing back for a second before turning and heading towards home, eager to sleep…
It wasn’t long before the detective made it home and unlocked his door, slipping inside before closing and relocking it. He yawned slightly as he took off his shoes and put on his slippers and placed his coat on the rack. Today had been quite an interesting day… almost as interesting as the night before…
Justin sighed as he was trying to sleep. He felt bad for injuring the boy but he was a strong young man too. He was really young to be taking on that kind of responsibility in fact. It was then he decided to help the boy in any way possible.
Daisuke sighed as he lay in bed that night. Justin seemed like a nice person... someone he could trust. As well as someone else that would most likely end up in danger because of him and the destiny his family name held... Sure, Dark was really just a piece of artwork but he was a part of him... a part of his very soul. Not to mention Dark was his friend... his constant companion before he was sealed away for good. The black wings had been destroyed and there was no way to release the two spirits who\'d been captured inside it.
\"Dark...\" the youth murmured before he closed his eyes and allowed sleep to take a hold of him, thrusting him into a deep sleep and a world of dreams where everything seemed to be perfect...
