Chapter three:The Kiss Of Vampire Hunter D
" So then if you do not want to show me around town, then where are you showing me?" D asked. As the two exited the tavern.
Sabriel looked at D and smiled. She blushed slightly," Promise not to laugh?"
" You already made me promise not to laugh at your name. Why would I laugh about anything else?" D asked.
Sabriel nodded." Good point. I'm taking you to the forest. There is a secret orchard, Cherry Blossum tree garden there." She said. "I need to go to the stablemaster first. He has my horse."
" I do not have a horse." D shook his head.
" No? Well I suppose if you'd like. We can walk....if that is alright with you?"
D blinked once then smiled gently. He had never been asked on a walk before. When Sabriel stared into his eyes, she got her answer. She smiled sweetly and turned and walked towards the country road, which would lead to the forests. D following. He walked close beside her.
" Was it your mother?" He cut their uneasy silence. As he glanced at the open country with wide cornfeilds, and wheat grass.
Sabriel paused in walking and stared at him," What?" She asked.
" Was your mother the vampire?" D asked,
Sabriel turned away from him and hung her head. D just stared at her. And then lifted his slender pale hand and touched her shoulder. " I am sorry. I am in no place to ask of your business." He muttered.
Sabriel smiled lightly and looked at him." Its alright. I just...." She paused. And cleared her throat."....my mother was mortal. My grandfather's daughter." She said. D nodded and touched her hand with his.
There were no words exchanged between them. Sabriel merely stared at his slender pale hand. His nails were somewhat longer. Kind of longer her's at least. When she looked back at D, he realized what he had done and quickly slid his hand back" Forgive me, Sabriel. But...your hand is warm." He whispered.
Sabriel smiled," So is your's D." She whispered back," Come on, lets go off the road from here. There is a secret path that will lead us where we need to be." She stated and walked off the dirt road. D following her of course.
Upon entering the forest, D glanced up at the tall trees, the squirells scurring across their wide branches. He looked back ahead of him. Then he heard Sabriel's voice," Some say it was in these woods, my father and mother first fell in love."
" Is it true?" D asked.
" I don't know. My mother died giving birth to me, and my father. Stricken with greif let the town's people kill him. But I can sence them whenever I enter these forests." She explained with a calm smile.D nodded and walked in unison with Sabriel. This time he intwined his fingers around hers. Again did he realize he was doing this? The face on the remaining hand did not think so.
The two paused walking as they stood near a clear river.Sabriel looked at him. Then down at their fingers, their thumbs caressing along the back of eachother's hands. She cleared her throat." OH!" D forced his hand from her's again." I...I...am...forgive me...Sabriel...I don't mean to...." Abruptly Sabriel forced him silent with a light kiss on the cheek.
" It's alright. Come on." She said and lifted her skirts, stepping into the water. She moved forward. Up the river. Staying near the shore.
" It's up river?" D asked.
" Yes." Was all she said. A little ways up and they came to a large waterfall. D stared at it for a moment." It's inside the falls." He mused.
" It's a start." Sabriel said and lead him under the waterfall in the rocky cave. Both got a little wet of course. But a little water never hurt anyone....did it?" No one else knows about this. Except Barbara, grandfather, and I. It was shown to him by my mother. Her and I my father got married in the garden that his love and devotion for her created." She paused as they stood before a rock doorway. Sabriel smiled to D and moved out of the way and let him approach.
He walked into the light, his eyes widened slightly, there was an area with a clear bambling brook. Between the greenest grass. Under a large, cherry blossum tree. One side had blossum trees with gently falling petals in rows as far as the eye can see. On the other side. Rows of fruit orchards and lotus flower beds. One tree had a swing hanging from one of the strong branches. There were several white marble benches. And roses growing around the lotus flowers. It was enchantment all it's own. Something D could never imagine seeing even in dreams.
" It's wonderful. Isn't it?" Sabriel's voice. The voice of an angel snapped him back into reality. He glanced down at her.
" It is nothing in which I have ever seen. Sabriel." He said softly. And walked towards the brook. He knelt down. It was clear and appeared to the the cleanest water he'd ever seen. It was hard to believe that a vampire could create such a place of beauty.
"D."Sabriel whispered, kneeling down beside him. He looked at her beautiful face." Could you please remove your sword and cloak?" She asked softly, lifted her warm hand to cup his cheek. D did not answer right away, he simply leaned into her touch.
When he opened his eyes again her beautiful face still looked at his. He smiled calmly at her," I will. Since you have been so kind to me." He said softly and stood. Removing his sword. He leaned it against a tree and drapped his slighly wet cloak upon a branch.
When he looked back at her, she was standing on one of the benches reaching for some fruit. It was a peach. " Here try this." She tossed it to him. He caught it with one hand. And looked at it for a moment, and pressed it to his lips and bit down upon it. It was sweet and very juicy.
Sabriel smiled and jumped off the bench, and sat down upon the swing, in which her mother used to swing in. D noticed that the girl had closed her eyes comfortably." What did she look like?" D asked Sabriel abruptly.
" In pictures that I have seen? She was gorgeous, D. You yourself would have fallen head over heals for her. Grandfather said that my father was good to her. He never even had been tempted to bite her." She opened her eyes. D was standing there beside her again.
Sabriel again blushed," Sorry. This garden makes me feel romantic." She whispered.
D nodded and knelt down beside her. Where she remained on the swing. He reached over and plucked a lotus flower and lifted it to her. Sabriel smiled at him lightly. Rather then giving it directly to her. D lifted his free hand and unwrapped her bandana, freeing her pointy ears. It was then, when he slid the flower between her tightly wrapped hair and her ear.
They stared at eachother for a long moment. " Kiss her. Kiss her." He could hear his left palm muttering to him. D blinked once then slid his right hand along her cheek and gently pulled her face towards his. Where his lips pressed firmly against hers. Their lips lingered there for several moments. Then D eased gently from the kiss and looked away slowly at the babbling brook.
