“Okay, the truck's reached the second checkpoint.” Rion heard over the transmitters. He bit his lip and looked over from his spot on the roof of Guy and Jemi’s school. Sure enough the pet transport vehicle was rounding the corner and coming closer. When it passed the young man’s perch, he pushed the talk button and said, “Past the third checkpoint. Are you sure about this?” His voice was soft, almost like he was pleading.
“Thanks, babe.” Guy replied, choosing to ignore Rion’s other comment. He and a few of his gang buddies were standing behind a corner, checking their weapons and making sure they were loaded and ready. He looked around the corner with a little mirror to see when the vehicle got close enough. 3…2…1… He turned and nodded to the group.
Rion watched from his perch with dread and anticipation as they ran out into the road, guns drawn. He bit his lip and started to climb down the ladder onto the ground, keeping an eye on them the whole time. The truck stopped and the driver got out with his hands up. He lay down on the ground- Rion assumed Guy instructed him to- with his hands on his head to prove that he wouldn’t be going for any weapons. The Blondie could only hear shouts as his twin and another boy went to open the back and inspect the contents.
Guy laughed and came back out again. “Rion, check this out! A-class pets, and they’re all asleep. Tell me which one you want; I’ll make it a gift.” The young Blondie only shook his head, not wanting any more part in this thievery.
“This is wrong. We shouldn’t be doing this, you know that. I think-” But whatever Rion thought was lost as a laser fired in between them, hitting Guy’s friend in the chest. He fell back, obviously dead. Rion screamed with surprise and fright, and Guy grabbed him to pull him over behind the truck so they wouldn’t get hit.
“Shit.” The mongrel swore, using his mirror to look and see what the hell happened. It seemed the truck driver had a weapon stashed. His men must not have been watching too closely… Guy could only see someone’s foot. Another dead member. Jemi came running from around the truck, shooting at the driver, but was hit in the arm. He screamed and fell to the ground. Once the driver turned away from him, he started crawling away.
Then there were sirens. The truck driver stopped shooting and swore. Normally killing a few mongrels would have been nothing, but now the new act had passed and mongrels were supposed to be counted as citizens. Killing what looked to be minors… this wouldn’t be good. He got back in the truck and took off quickly, pressing a button so the cargo doors shut and locked.
The sirens got closer, and Rion wanted to run, but Guy was kneeling beside one of his friends. The young man was crying, trying to make him wake up as if he was only asleep. “We have to go…” The Blondie said urgently, but his twin was less than receptive.
“No! You have to help me… we have to get them home! The cops… they don’t like mongrels. Nobody will see these kids again… you have to help me carry them away!”
Rion looked up and gasped as he saw a patrol car turning the corner at high speed, coming towards them. Guy looked up as well and let out a sob before acting fast. “Come on.” He stood and grabbed Rion’s arm, running towards the dark alley they’d come out of. The other was happy to get away, though it hurt him too to leave the other’s bodies behind.
Suddenly he was thrown forward. “Go. I have to get them… I think Koji might still be alive.” He wiped his tears. “I’ll meet you at home; you know I can get away from the cops... I’m faster.” Though he didn’t look quite so sure himself.
“Guy, don’t you fucking dare to go back there, or I swear I’ll-” Once again Rion was cut off as Guy’s lips met his, giving him a deep kiss.
“Go. I’ll be home.” With that, Guy drew his weapon and ran back to the scene. Rion waited a moment, but heard weapons firing… this wasn’t good. But he had to go… he couldn’t be caught. It would ruin all his plans for the future. And Guy would be home. He promised. He had to be home. So the young Blondie swallowed his tears and turned to run to Kaeri’s house.

Daryl and Kaeri immediately knew something was up. Maybe it was the fact that half of Jemi’s arm was missing that gave it away. The coward spilled, telling every detail as his mother rushed him to the hospital. Rion waited at home, telling Daryl that he was waiting for Guy. Loyal as a dog, he waited. The Blondie sat at the kitchen table all night, waiting. But there was no Guy. Nobody walked through the door. And Rion had never felt more alone.

The next morning, Rion woke to find that he’d only slept about two hours. Guy still wasn’t home, but he needed to be at work in half an hour. The Blondie was ready to skip it, and moved around the house in a daze. Daryl had returned with news about their adoptive brother. Apparently Jemi would be fine, but the doctors would need to fit a prosthetic for his arm. Still no Guy….
When the furniture asked why he wasn’t getting ready to go to the capitol, Rion explained that he had to wait for his twin.
“That won’t do any good.” Daryl replied softly.
“So instead I should assume he’s dead and go on with my life?” Rion asked bitterly. The furniture was surprised, his Blondie charge was always so soft spoken and kind to him.
“No. If you go into work today, then you can use your influence to release Guy from prison, if he wasn’t killed.” The furniture set a cup of coffee into Rion’s hands. “I will wait for him here. But I need you to go and get news of your brother. I promised Iason and Riki that I would take care of you, and right now this is the only way that I can be sure your brother is safe.” If Daryl was good at anything, it was planning.
It made sense, but Rion still didn’t feel right with leaving. “You promise you’ll wait here for him?” He asked, this time his voice was softer.
Daryl nodded. “I took the liberty of pressing your new robes. You won’t be able to shower, but I’ll comb your hair for you.”
The Blondie dressed and let Daryl do his hair, managing to be ready in less than fifteen minutes. He walked out the door, an empty feeling in the pit of his stomach. Was his twin safe? Was he even alive? Rion was unsure and he hated that feeling. Guy was all he had…. It would kill him to lose another family member.
As he entered the large, marble building, Rion steeled himself for a long day. He was part Blondie. He could push his emotions to the back of his mind and pretend nothing was bothering him. But hopefully nobody would notice the way that his eyes were glazing over with unshed tears.
