Chapter Three
AN: I couldn't decide if I wanted to 'recreate' their pasts entirely or just use the pasts they have in Saiyuki. So I figured I'd just start writing and see what happened...
It wasn’t as if Hakkai had expected the blonde to take it lightly but he hadn’t expected him to react so violently either. He wasn’t entirely sure such a weapon would kill him but he knew either way it would still hurt quite a bit. The brunette didn’t move out of the way even though they both knew he could. He was surprised however when he felt the slight rush of fear. Fear of death meant he had something he still wanted to do in life… or someone he didn’t want to leave behind…
“Why didn’t you tell me you were a vampire? Were you trying to get me while my back was turned?” Sanzo cocked the gun, feeling satisfied when Hakkai flinched at the metallic click. “Or were you afraid I’d try to kill you?” The fiery anger drained away from his eyes leaving pure annoyance. “Idiot.” He uncocked the gun and let it fall to the couch, drawing in another breath of smoke and turning away. “You should know by now that you can trust me. If I was going to shoot you I would have done it already.”
Hakkai visibly relaxed as did Goku. “I’m sorry Kouryuu…” That was all he could say really. “How did you find out?” He asked curiously.
“Monkey told me.” Sanzo said nonchalantly.
If Goku had fur it would have ruffled like an angry cat’s. “M’not a monkey! Stop callin’ me that!”
“I will. When you stop calling me ‘Sanzo’. I’m not some fairytale monk traveling west with a bunch of idiots.” Sanzo retorted.
“HA! So you DID read it!” Goku said accusingly and almost flailed.
“Che!” Sanzo flicked his lighter open and lit up another cigarette.
The chuckling emerald eyed brunette looked a bit concerned. “Is it really a good idea to smoke so many of those in such a short period?” He asked then quickly regretted it as the blonde pinned him with a glare so fierce it might be deadly to a human. The brunette put his hands up in ‘surrender’. “Ah-haha…” He made a mental note never to question Sanzo’s smoking habits again.
…Two Years Earlier…
Mizu… A river?
Amethyst eyes locked onto the narrow bridge before him. The river was a good fifteen feet wide and those rapids… He surely wouldn’t make it out of this alive if he fell. “Che!” Slender porcelain fingers closed around a pack of Marlboros in his coat pocket. Methodically he retrieved one of the slender sticks, slipped it between his lips and dropped the pack back in his pocket, fetching a lighter and lighting the cigarette. The motions were so practiced the way he moved almost looked like an art form. He continued to stare at the deadly makeshift bridge debating his two options. The journey seemed to be growing ever more perilous. Was this really worth the trouble? He began to turn back but in mid step he clenched the cigarette in his fist, destroying the slender object with an annoyed click of tongue on teeth. If he didn’t continue that damn voice would just keep calling him over and over again. He’d never get any sleep for the rest of his natural life.
”But Master… how did you find me?” Said a young blonde boy.
“Mh? You called me, Kouryuu.” An elderly blonde man replied with a simple smile on his face.
The young boy looked absolutely baffled. “Master… you’re not making any sense. I was just a baby. How could I call you?”
“Your soul called out to me. So I followed the voice and there you were floating in the river.” He answered as if it was the simplest thing to understand and completely sane.
The boy still looked confused but huffed and decided to just let it drop.
“I’m going to find him and fucking kill him!” He snarled and continued on his way across the bridge, silently praying to nonexistent gods that it didn’t give out. “I hate water…”

Yuki…
A cold breeze blew across nearly lifeless cheeks. He hated the winter months. So cold. And the snow piled so high it blocked out the light. He loved the sun. Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year… How long had it been? Why was he here? He must have really done something terrible. He must be some horrible criminal. …to deserve such a punishment. He wanted… someone? It was almost as if his entire being was crying out for something… or someone. But he didn’t know who or what he wanted.
When he closed his eyes all he could see was gold and violet. It comforted him but it also frustrated him. What did it represent? Why did it make him feel at ease? Why was everything missing? If he could scream he would. His body was kept at the brink of death, not allowed to recover yet not allowed to die. He was trapped, not only by the chains on his wrists and ankles but by bars and spells.
The first snow began to fall and if the boy had the energy he would have shuddered. He simply closed his eyes tightly and tried to fall asleep. He wanted to escape this horrid winter. And his soul cried out for salvation…

The closer he got to his destination the louder the ‘voice’ grew. He almost growled in annoyance. He really would KILL this idiot when he found him. He swore he would. Then he’d return home and take a nice long nap.
As he drew closer he could make out a cave in the distance, hidden in the side of the mountain. That must be it. There really was nowhere else to go. It made sense. The area was secluded and well hidden. With the rumors of a monster living in the mountain people avoided the area so no one would ever find the place unless they were deliberately looking.
Soon he was able to make out a small form bound in chains and sutras trapped just beyond the bars. He approached the bars and glared down at the small form. “Yo.”
Golden eyes drew up the form partially silhouetted by the sun but he too seemed to emit his own light. He… looked like an angel. The wide innocent eyes finally met the virulent amethyst ones framed by silken strands of pure gold and he realized t hen that this was the person he’d been needing so desperately for so long. At that moment, he could already feel his strength returning.
As those large innocent eyes locked with his he could feel his anger drain away in an instant. The urge to beat the creature unconscious was gone and to his frustration, he had to break the vow he made on his way here.
“You’re the one who’s been calling me?” The ‘angel’ asked.
As he reached out to the caged ‘animal’ he saw the light return to those golden eyes that had looked so sad at first. The bindings and spells seemed to disappear at his touch. And since that day…
‘THWACK!’ The sound echoed throughout the room.
“OW!!! SANZO! What was that for?!”
…he’d regretted ever finding the chimp.

Purple eyes closed as he took a puff of the cigarette. “Turns out the saru was trapped in that cave for hundreds of years.” He said calmly and shrugged. “Tch. Had I know how much of a pain he was I would have put him back and left.”
Goku glared at Sanzo. “Had I known how much of a jerk you were I woulda’ stayed!”
“I’m not keeping you here!” Sanzo snarled.
“You need me.” The boy replied smugly.
“What?! Why would I need a bottomless pit?!” The blonde seethed, starting to get a bit worked up.
“You’d be lonely ‘cause no one else can stand to be around ya.” The little brunette smirked triumphantly.
“Kono baka yaro!” Out came the fan, coming down hard on the boy’s head. And the boy wailed in pain.
Hakkai laughed softly at the two as they bickered.
