Chapter 3 -- Home
Chapter 3 – Home
The next morning, we requested an audience with Queen Beryl, which she was happy to grant. She and I were quite close, as she was like a second mother to me. She herself was nearly 1000 years old, which was still young by Dark Kingdom standards. Kunzite and I weren’t worried that she would be upset that we were leaving her immediate service because she had often questioned me on my decision to leave the crown, and she had also wished me the best fortune in finding someone who I could share my passions with, whether that person was male or female.
“Your Majesty, I request to take terminal leave so that I may return to Yrucrem, and request that Kunzite-sama be allowed to return with me,” I said. Had we been in private, I wouldn’t have needed to use such flowery wording in my request, but because most of the people who were in attendance were still unaware of my position in the Dark Kingdom royalty, I decided to go through the motions for the time being.
“Zoicite, am I to understand that you have made acquaintances with Kunzite, then?” she said with a smile, also adding some sugary coding to her words.
“Yes, My Queen,” I said, meeting her gaze and seeing the sparkle in her eyes. “My apologies for requesting that Kunzite be taken from your army so soon after arriving, but I believe that he will be of better use in… my FATHER’S kingdom.” The smile never left the queen’s face, even when a wave of mutters spread through the group of people who were in the room with us.
“I regret to lose both of you as my warriors, Prince Zoicite,” she said, immediately silencing the murmurs. “But I also believe that this is for the best. King Hermes and I suspected that this might happen when Kunzite was sent here, and we already arranged for a standby replacement, another of my high-ranking warriors by the name of Nephrite.” My eyes widened slightly, not entirely enthused by those words, and I looked over at Kunzite. He put his finger to his lips, warning me not to say anything.
“He will serve her well, and he’ll be out of our hair for a while,” Kunzite thought at me. Nephrite was indeed a stellar fighter, and very gifted in the area of astrology and star energy, but as the second prince of Retipuj (Dark Jupiter) and not having any real chance of ever making it to the throne, he had often been a bit of a troublemaker at the various kingdom functions over the years. He rarely ceased to get on my nerves, and in my opinion he didn’t deserve the command that he was about to acquire. But I was not yet in a place to request his removal. Even when I became king, I would still be outranked by Queen Beryl, as she was the queen of the entire Dark Kingdom, and I would only rule one of the planets.
“I look forward to seeing you reinstated as Crowned Prince of Yrucrem, with Kunzite as your consort,” she said. “You will both make excellent kings one day.”
“Thank you, your Majesty,” we both said. I smiled at Kunzite, and he took my hand, drawing me into his arms, both of us still facing the queen. It was then that a number of people understood what Queen Beryl had meant by “making acquaintances” with Kunzite. There was again a murmur from the crowd, but the few of my men who knew me and my preference for men grinned and cheered for us.
“Long live Prince Zoicite!” one of them called. We turned toward him and smiled even wider, and I felt like I was the groom at a wedding just after the pronouncement of Man and Wife.
“Enough!” Queen Beryl snapped, but she wasn’t angry. “I will come and see you this evening before you leave, and we can talk at length.”
“Yes!”
A little while later, Kunzite and I went back to his room, laughing and talking the whole way. “I can hardly wait to get you home, Kunzite. I already know that Father likes you, and you’ll be welcomed into the family.”
“I’m just glad that my house is near the Palace, so that for the next hundred years or so, until you become King of Yrucrem, perhaps…” He stopped, looking slightly nervous about what he wanted to say. “If you don’t mind me asking, my Prince, would you live with me in my house?” I looked into his eyes and saw that they were clouded with emotion.
“I would love that,” I said, melting into his arms. “And with the money that I have at my disposal, we can make OUR home into a grand-style mansion, worthy of not only a high general, but also a king.” I felt him stiffen a little bit, letting out a small sigh, and suddenly realized that I may have said something wrong. “Oh, Gods, I didn’t mean that your house isn’t good enough for me. I’ve been living in less-than-royal living spaces for a few years now. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not that,” he said. “But I don’t think you’ll have to worry about the style of our home. My family has been in Nobility for thousands of years, and our home is as elaborately decorated as any of the rooms in your father’s palace, all of which I’ve become acquainted with.”
“I’m sorry, Kunzite-sama,” I said, unintentionally reverting back to a more formal title. He gave an audible gasp, and I realized that I’d done so, and I knew that he realized that I’d had the best intentions in mind when I’d mentioned improving his home.
“No need to apologize, Zoi-chan,” he said, wrapping me in his arms again. “I love you.”
