*Wolfwood's POV*

The sun was peeking over the hills, painting the sand in an orange hue. The smoke from my cigarette arose to the morning sky, free to move as it pleased. Just another beautiful morning in this town. How much longer we would be here I did not know. It was never good to stay in one place to long. It was probably around 9ish and that meant old Spikey was well awake. I began to walk down the wooden porch until I reached the room he was staying in. Casting aside my cigarette, I knocked on the door.

"Vash? You up?"

No repsonse. So I decided to enter. It wasn't breaking and entering...just entering. The door was unlocked so he had been outside at some point. Or he was just an idiot who didn't remember to look the door. The second thought was probably right. I turned the knob and opened the door to see a gun with an egg balancing on it staring me down. "Ummm....I hope there wasn't a chicken on that before." I snickered, as Vash lowered the gun. "Naw." He replied opening the egg on a frying pan over a self-made stove, "just part of training I do every morning." I sighed, knowing I would never get the 'training' in balancing an egg on a gun only to eat it after. As he began to eat, I noticed that we were in fact the only two in the room. "Strange..." I thought.

"Hey, where's Ree? I thought she'd be with you."

Vash shook his head, part of the egg white hanging out of his mouth. He threw his head back launching the egg white up and into his mouth. "She was here last night but then she left. I thought she would go to your room. Wonder where she is." Vash stated scratching his head. There would be two ways to find her: 1) have her come to us since she must have gone off for a reason or 2) wait and listen for a disturbance in town. It seemed that almost as soon as that thought passed through my head, a shout came from outside. Vash and I looked out the window to see Reesa and two men yelling at each other. Why is it always the second thought that's right?! Why didn't anyone pick door number 1 for a change? A sigh escaped my lips.

"Should we go do something about this?"
I nodded.
"Before someone gets shot."

Vash seemed to laugh uncomfortably. "Yeah right....right?" I looked back at his goofy face. My look told him I was not kidding. "It’s too early for this." Vash sighed. Amen to that.

She may be small in physique but goddamn that girl could yell. Vash and I were in no rush to get over there. There were a few other people peeking their heads out of their windows, intrigued as to what the commotion was. "I won! So pay up!" The shorter of the two men demanded. Reesa stood there with her arms crossed over her chest. "You cheated. I saw you slip the ace of clubs out of your sleeve." She smirked, very calm for the situation. "You better listen to Duke, sweetie pie, or else."

"My my my. Such loud voices so early in this day that God has given us."

Everyone turned to face Vash and myself. The men seemed less than pleased whereas Reesa's expression was unchanged. "Ree, what happened?" Vash asked, walking next to her. Reesa pointed two fingers at the men in front of us. "There was a large poker table going this morning. I was doing very well and I needed to regardless, if I don't wanna sleep outside again. I'm kinda poor right now." She sighed scratching her head, "Anyway! It came down to me and that Duke guy and somehow he got all 4 aces in one hand." "That's really lucky!" Vash smiled in awe. "You are an idiot." Reesa side glared at him. Vash gave her the naiive look but I knew what she meant. "There was foul play eh?" I commented.

"Hell no!! I got lucky is all!" Duke yelled before Reesa violently jumped up and kneed him in the face. "You are so full of shit! I saw you pull the ace out of your sleeve. This is the second time I’ve said it." "There's no way! I'm innocent I tell ya! And even if I had, you couldn't have seen it! It was all the way across five tables push together." the young man yelled with his friend nodding right behind him. I smirked as a laugh escaped my lips.

"Thou shall not steal."

The men looked at me confused as all hell. "You were caught cheating. If she were to pay you, it would be considered stealing because you won unfairly. She was able to see it clear as day." I smiled, turning her around to look face to face with the thugs. "You might wanna go home and read that Bible of yours some more, Preach. She couldn't have seen anything." My eyes sharpened, as I shook my head. "Oh yes she could have." I nodded, placing my hands on Reesa's shoulders.

Reesa pointed to her right eye and that's when the truth came out.

"My right eye has been fixed to act like the scope on a rifle. I can see up to 100 feet away. Needless to say, your little 'card switching' was easy to catch. I'm sure all the others who played with us and left because you 'beat them fairly' would love to hear about this!"

Both of the men realized now that they were caught and there was no way out of it. Reesa was right and they were wrong. They high tailed it and ran like dogs, cursing her name and other unpleasant words that became less and less audible as they disappeared over the horizon. "So did YOU cheat this time?" I asked with somewhat of an accusation in my voice. "Surprisingly no. I didn't need to. That guy was so obvious I knew all I had to do was wait him out." She shrugged her shoulders. "Isn't that kinda the pot calling the kettle black then?" Vash asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. Another shrug. I laughed a little. Not much had changed.

*****

Birds were really loud at this time of day. There was a flock of smaller birds trying to fight off a large hawk. Reesa was watching the birds; no doubt she saw it like she was there in the sky. That right eye of hers was quite a salvation as well as a curse. Though it did add to her looks in a sense. Why was I thinking about that…I had no idea. We weren’t together anymore. Our time had passed.

“So what do you wanna talk about?”

Her voice seemed almost emotionless. I sighed reaching for a cigarette in my pocket. “The weather.” I joked, fiddling for my book of matches. “Always the smart aleck, Nick. What do you really wanna talk about?” she turned her face from the birds to me. My mouth didn’t move, mind blanking. What did I want to discuss? “I guess…whatcha been up to these past two years?” Perfect topic starter. Not! She sighed, crossing her legs, leaning back on her arms. Any closer to the wood and she’d be laying on it. “Looking for you I guess.” She sighed. “You guess?” I asked, sarcasm clearly present. “What? I mean I wouldn’t have had to if you didn’t up and leave.” She snorted. Now the gloves were up.

“I went out for a while. I always did it.”
“Not for a week you didn’t.”

I was caught off guard. “1-0.” I thought.

“Do you want the truth?” I asked. She nodded. My answer was kinda pathetic to admit to her. “Honestly, I ran out of money. I lost a game of chess so there went my gas money.” I smiled, scratching the back of my head. Reesa looked at me with a confused look probing me to see if I was serious. Upon seeing that I was indeed telling the truth, she burst into laughter.

“Shut it, Ms. Poker Cheater.”
“I didn’t this time.”
“Whatever. Where were you when I got back?”

Her laughter stopped. She let her elbows relax as she laid herself down and turned so she wasn’t facing me. Did something happen? I had returned to the orphanage to find that Reesa had left to look for me a few days before. I was sure that she would come back…but she never did. All I could think was that she was done with me. The orphanage was just as I had left it so no events occurred. The only thing that had left was her.

“Ree? What happened?”

*Reesa’s POV*

I was holding back tears as he asked me that. Goddamn Vash making my emotions easier to show. My mind replayed my body glued to the terribly cold tile, blood covering parts of my body. It dyed the floor along with my tears. “Are you gonna answer me?” I heard him ask a second time. God knew I wanted to tell him the truth. All of it but I wasn’t ready. I was afraid to tell him. “Legato and Knives came to get me.” I sighed. Nick didn’t say anything. I didn’t expect him to. At least it was part of the truth and not a complete lie. “Don’t worry. They didn’t get me at the orphanage. I was a few towns over.” I looked back over my shoulder at him. “Needless to say, I was under close watch after that.” Nick just lit a cigarette and looked towards the horizon. I stood up and placed my feet on the desert sand. It took a few extra seconds to stand up since I had been ‘oh-so comfy’ laying there.

“Did you leave because of me?”

I turned to look at him. “Why would I?” escaped my lips, moving so I stood face to face with him. “You know how I get sometimes. My hands are so blood soaked that I cannot bear to hold the kids for fear of dirtying them. I don’t deserve to hold them. Why would it be any different towards a woman?” he explained, sadness present in his voice. “But I’m in the same boat as you.” I stated, this being 100% truth. “Mother is God in the eyes of a child. The children saw you as a mother no matter what.” He exhaled a smoky haze around his face. “But I’m not a mother,” part of my voice broke there, “And my hands are no more fit to hold them.” A rumble broke my thoughts. The sky had darkened clouds barely noticeable against it. “Rain? So suddenly…” I thought. Sure enough, a drizzle started to fall and then proceeded to get heavier. Rain in the desert, quite a rare occurrence. It felt cool against my skin. My hair was starting to cling to my face.

“Do you need a bath that badly?” Nick joked. “You wanna say that again?” I asked. He laughed, dropping his cigarette. No need to put it out. The rain did that quite efficiently. Our conversation had stopped. Our eyes were locked on each other, neither face with any particular expression. What was this accomplishing? We were just talking like we used to but…the past was the past. We weren’t what we were before, right? I stared at the ground, hair falling in front of my eyes. “Do you even deserve it?!” my mind screamed, “Is this what you wanted when you found him?! The relationship is over. It’s been two years. Grow up.” Your brain mocking you does indeed suck. Something came down on my head, sheltering my upper body. I looked up to see Nick in just his white button up shirt to keep his chest hidden. “If you are just gonna stand here in the rain, you at least need some form of covering. If you don’t want pneumonia, come sit in my room.” And with that, he turned and walked towards his room.

Although the scent of Nick on his jacket made me feel safe, the after effect of pneumonia would suck. “Wow…” I suddenly realized, “I says ‘sucks’ an awful lot…”
