Boys

I am so happy that the site has finished its move. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah. Traditions, hmmmm.

Chapter Thirty: Boys

The effects of the prolonged transformation faded slightly overnight and when Tohru came over the next day, I was still seeing, but not with the clarity I had.
Several attempts over as many days never duplicated the results of the first time and eventually I simply resigned myself to going to an ophthalmologist and being fitted for glasses.
My personal vanity reared its ugly head and the end results were contact lenses, and for close up a stronger pair of reading glasses.
Never would my vision return to perfection, but I could see and that was all that mattered, really.
The boys were ecstatic.
Yuuhi’s picture production went into overtime and soon my bedroom wall was accepting the overflow from the refrigerator.
Kato kept staring at me. I would be reading one of their books to them and look up to see that intense green-eyed stare directed at my eyes and have to stifle a laugh at his facial expression.
Tsuki expressed his happiness in a more physical way. He clung to me like a leech, only releasing me when he had to go to the bathroom or when he finally drifted to sleep in my arms. Or when my brother and cousin came once a week to take the boys for the day.
Help for Tsuki came from a surprising place.

I was dropping they boys off at Shigure’s house on the day that Hatori planned to induce Hana’s labor and Tsuki refused to release my hand at the door.
Shigure squatted down in front of him and smiled in his knowing way.

Shigure’s POV

I couldn’t help but feel for that small boy who had seen Yuki go through so much already. His fear for his father was so intense that it pulled at my heart.
“Tsuki.” I said, squatting to look him in the eyes. “I am afraid every time that your Okaasan goes out of my door. Did you know that?” I asked, sharing a secret that I had never even told Yuki or Kyo. “Ever since he and your Tousan first came to live with me, when they were in high school, I have had to let them go out of here and into the dangerous world. I have dreams about them and I wake up crying. But I have to let them go. Do you know why?” I asked.
Tsuki shook his head and I smiled at him, a secret sharing smile. “Because if I didn’t, they would be unhappy. Like a wild bird kept in a cage. They would be so unhappy they would die inside. I don’t want them to be unhappy, do you?” I finished with.

Yuki’s POV

Tsuki’s eyes filled with tears and he shook his head vehemently.
He jumped into Shigure’s arms and wept fiercely.
I stood back and watched him, sure that when the waterworks dried up, he would be a happier child.
I left them to catch up with Kyo at the hospital. There we watched the birth of our newest child, a small female, that we named ‘Yuujin’ in honor of the friendship we had with our former cousin.
Yuujin was beautiful and when I held her in my arms, and didn’t change into a rat, we knew she was also the new Sohma family horse.
