Grappler Research

Grappler Research

"Grrr," Jim growled. "Gaaah!" he shouted and the other engineers turned to see what was angering their chief engineer.

"Sir?" the female Ctarl questioned.

"These...plans...tell...me...nothing! To top it all off, there isn't a schematic of the Outlaw Star anywhere in Gilliam's memory banks!" he fumed and stood and started pacing the room. Then he got an idea.

"gene, you there or are you within the throws of another fuck session?" Jim asked.

"What is it?" Gene complained.

"Get the Outlaw Star and a Ctarl Grappler ship ready to launch. I want to test the human grappler ships with a human and a Ctarl and the Ctarl arms with a human and a Ctarl." Jim quickly explained.

"And just why the hell did you call me for that?"

"Because, you bum, our ship has the best grappler arms that was made by humans. Plus, we've got easier access to Ctarl grapplers within our own wing."

"Alright," Gene relented and cut the transmission.

"Ok, I'm going to get some actual data. you keep pouring over those schematics," Jim said and left.

888

"Ok, go into grappler combat mode and start smashing those small rocks," Jim said and Gene rolled his eyes. This seemed to be a waist of time, but Jim seemed to be on to something. Gene did so and Jim recorded the data he gets from the grappler arms.

"Ok Aisha, go for it," Jim encourage and with a smirk, she took the grappler arm controls and did the same thing. Jim shook his head at the data.

"What?" Gene asked.

"Had this ship been a normal ship built by the Federation, Aisha's use of the arms would have overloaded their systems. I didn't realize that this thing was so fared advance. I think the human grapplers will need to catch up to the Ctarl ships, but let me make sure of that. Ok Valeria, I'm coming aboard," Jim warned over the com-link.

Coffee cups and diagrams were spread out on the table. The female Ctarl saw Jim coming back into the room, looking quite smug.

"Ok, forget the Ctarl ships, for now. The human grappler ships are so far behind that they should have all been destroyed by now. The Ctarl grappler system can take the punishment of the strength a Ctarl can use. However, only the Outlaw Star's grappler system can take that sort of punishment. I had both Aisha and the admiral use the Outlaw Star arms, and even that crazy male Ctarl couldn't overload them."

"So, what will we do?" the female Ctarl asked.

"Simple. Start upgrading the human arms so they can handle a Ctarl controlling them. The problem after that is how to combat those arms of the Sith."

"We need an in tact Sith grappler ship to see how they do it." a human engineer offered.

"Yes, but the problem is that we end up destroying all of them when we fight them," Jim lamented.

"Not all of them, there's a ship in decaying orbit of Heifong VII," the female Ctarl reported.

"What? The water demon planet! We need to get that ship before it falls into that planet's ocean!"

888

Two Ctarl Cruisers towed the Sith ship into port. Fortunately, there was a giant hull breach at the top where the main guns had once been so there weren't any living Siths still aboard the ship. Jim smiled as the ship came to rest. This would be very informative and may lead to finding more weaknesses in their ships.

888

"Ok kid," the Ctarl general began, "what the hell did you find?"

"Well, we now know why their grappler ships are stronger than ours. Unlike our ships, who's grappler controls are directly tied into the pilot's chair, they have a separate console for just the arms. The outlaw star can transfer arm control to someone else, but that is the only ship in the fleet that can do that," Jim began.

"Ok, so what do we do?" the human general asked.

"We found something else. The controls on their ships are a bio-neural direct link-up."

"What!?" everyone in the room shouted save Gene who had heard this explanation before hand.

"That's right. They are tied into the ship in a similar manner that our navigator is. We can adapt the system to our ships, but there is a problem."

"What?" Valeria asked.

"The system cannot be adapted for human biology. Only Ctarl biology can handle the system as is." Jim answered.

"That's the problem, we'd have to start mixing the crews," the human general mused.

"Damn," the Ctarl general swore.

"How long would it take to re-fit the grappler ships we've got?" Valeria questioned.

"The first ship could be done in a week, but I'm not sure how we'll handle the command structure if we start mixing the crews," Jim said.

"We'll deal with that, kid. you go find a ship to test this new system on," the Ctarl general said and Jim nodded.

888

"Why that one?" the Ctarl engineer asked.

"It's the newest grappler ship in the fleet and it'll be the easiest to do a re-fit to," Jim explained. "I'll have Aisha test the system."

"I could do that," the Ctarl offered.

"Thanks, but I need a Ctarl soldier to test them and Aisha is the one I can get at any time," Jim said.

'Damn it. How the fuck am I supposed to spend time with him if he keeps trying to bring Aisha in on everything we do now!' the Ctarl engineer fumed.

"Are we sure the bio-neural circuitry can't be adapted to humans? Human and Ctarls are..." the human engineer began but Jim stopped him.

"We are close, genetically, but the human nervous system cannot handle the stress the system will put on it." 'But, Melfina, being a bio-android, could, if Gene ever got hurt,' he thought and filed that thought away for later.

888

"Shouldn't you be refitting that ship?" Gilliam asked Jim.

"That ship is still out on patrol for another two hours. Gilliam, do you know how deeply connected Melfina becomes when she links with the ship?"

"I'm not too sure about that, Jim. Those systems that help Melfina link up direct to ship aren't under my control. We can both fly the ship, but we can't communicate with each other, except for verbally of course.

"They didn't want you taking over Melfina's mind, nor did they want Melfina taking over the entire ship...interesting."

"What are you getting at?" Gilliam inquired.

"This new system isn't going to work for humans, but Melfina is a bio-android, but if I only knew more about her design. There isn't a good enough medical scanner in the fleet that can give me a Schematic of her design."

"Why would you need that?"

"To integrate the system on our ship encase Gene is injured during combat. I would hate to have the Outlaw Star behind the rest of the fleet. And, I don't want to try and tie two grappler control systems together in this thing. Besides, the way we fight seems to work for us since we've been together for years now. We know each other's strengths and weaknesses. I'll just have to come up with a different twist for us," Jim smiled. "Start looking through your data banks, I want to know if there is any sort of blueprint in your memory. They had to have had one, somewhere."

"What about all that data that helped us get the neural-gel packs?"

"Of course! Gilliam, I'm transferring those files to your data banks. You can go through them quicker than I can. you find a schematic of the Outlaw Star you let me know, no matter what I'm doing."

"I shall do my best."

"That, I have no doubt of."
