Unforgivable

The group turned as one to look expectantly at Diablo as they stood around the blocked mouth of the cave system. Golden eyes rolled and he shifted to his full dragon form, swatting away the boulders as though they were feathers. The rest of them backed up so they didn’t get caught in the backlash, except for Ai, who was standing on the ledge overlooking the cave and watching her mate work. As the last of the rubble was moved, something grey tumbled out of the opened mouth of the cave.

Rei seemed to instantly be in front of the thing, one of the obsidian blades swinging out as she held it by the front of its clothing. But then it spoke. The voice sounded as though it hadn’t been used in years, dry and brittle. It grabbed on to the front of her shirt and red eyes looked up at her pleadingly.

“Rei. Thank the gods! Kill me! Make sure there’s nothing left for him to use. Please!”

She was so startled that she almost dropped the blade. “Lan?”

The thing nodded jerkily. “There are more you’d know. We weren’t burned. He dragged us back into the bodies. Bound our souls into the decaying flesh. Forced us to do things we would have never done in life. Please! Please! Kill me! It hurts too much to bear!”

Ai promptly took the situation out of Rei’s hands by jumping lightly down and wrenching the thing’s head off its body in a quick snap. Instead of blood, dust and brittle bits of bone flew everywhere. She shoved the head under one arm and pulled the body over to where Diablo stood, dropping it and the head at his feet and pointing to it. He nodded and she stepped back a few paces as did everyone else to avoid being caught in the blast. The body disintegrated almost instantly, leaving nothing but ash on the ground.

“Unforgivable,” Ai rumbled.

As Diablo backed off a bit, Xan of all people stepped forward. She held one hand out over the ashes and air began to swirl around what was left of the body.

“I call to the guardians of the dead. Walk with this soul and guide it safely.”

There was a stirring in the air and Diablo and Ai put a respectable distance between themselves and the pile of ashes. From the corner of his eye, Hakkai thought he saw a flash of blue and white light glide into the area and toward Xan. Gojyo shivered even though the day was relatively warm, feeling a cold pressure around him that he couldn’t explain. Rei, of course, saw the guardians as well as Lan’s spirit.

“Fare well in your next life, my friend,” Rei said softly.

Xan carefully gathered some of the ashes in her hands, watching solemnly as the wind stirred around them and sent them flying into the sky. “Back onto the wheel of life I do hereby release this soul.”

Gojyo and Hakkai stared at eachother for a moment.

“Does that mean she’s a priestess of some kind,” Gojyo asked Hakkai quietly.

“I believe it does,” Hakkai said thoughtfully, glancing from Xan to where Rei stood watching the proceedings.

“Dear gods, I am beyond screwed,” Gojyo said.

“I don’t understand what you mean, Gojyo,” Hakkai said, still watching the proceedings with Xan.

Gojyo sighed heavily and Hakkai turned his head to look curiously at his friend.

“After this gets done, I gotta talk to you,” Gojyo said.

Hakkai nodded. “Of course. You know you can talk to me about anything, Gojyo.”

“Yeah. It’s just that this is gonna be a really weird talk I think.”

Hakkai’s eyebrows lifted a little. “Oh?”

“It can wait,” Gojyo said, watching as Diablo once again activated Rei’s fire armor.

Hakkai nodded and turned to watch Rei walk toward him.

“Ready?” she said.

“As much as I’ll ever be, I suppose.”

“Come on, let’s do this!” Xan called to them over her shoulder.

The rest of them had started moving when Ai held up a hand and shook her head at them. They all looked puzzledly from her to Diablo, seeking some kind of explanation. She pointed to the cave and they all heard scratching and shuffling noises coming from further inside. Diablo shifted sideways a little and opened his mouth at the cave entrance. Shrieks and squeals were heard inside the cave as the massive fireball traveled down the main tunnel, scorching everything in the way. Ai’s mouth tilted upward slightly as she looked at her mate. Diablo changed to humanoid form and one brow lifted as he looked at her.

“No compliment?” he growled.

Ai snorted. “Compliments give male big head,” she said, sticking her nose in the air and proceeding to lead the way into the cave.

Hakkai looked oddly at Hakuryuu as he snorted and wheezed so hard he nearly fell off of his shoulder. Diablo glared and growled a bit at the little dragon.

“Wait until you have to deal with a stubborn female,” Diablo said warningly to Hakuryuu. It was then Hakkai realized the dragons had been teasing eachother and that Hakuryuu was laughing at them.
