Konzen sighed heavily as he leaned against the door to Shi’s small house. Shi had slept all the way through the healer coming to examine her. There was no way in any level of hell that either he or Tenpou were letting her get away with not seeing one. The healer had also given her something to help her sleep so she didn’t move around too much and further damage the ribs. Tenpou had insisted he was staying the next few days with Shi and that Konzen’s presence wasn’t necessary. He had kept the grin to himself and had merely lifted one blond brow in question before leaving the house. He’d have to find and corral Goku soon because the instant the little monkey found out he’d be pounding on Shi’s door and that was the last thing she needed at that moment.

A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he started toward the infirmary to see how Shi’s second in command was doing, he knew she’d want that information upon waking. Interesting that both Kenren and Tenpou had found the people they needed to fill their lives within a few weeks of one another. Though it had to have been brewing in Tenpou’s head for some time now. It would be interesting to see how Shi reacted to it when/if he ever told her he was crazy about her. Knowing Shi as he did one of two things was bound to happen, she would either knock him out for taking so damn long to tell her or she’d bail for a few weeks to think it over. His bet was on the second option for the simple fact that Shi had pretty much given up on the whole Tenpou thing. Shi could make snap decisions on the battlefield in an instant but for anything else she preferred to be more cautious about things and didn’t like to change her mind once a conclusion had been reached. See: her chasing Tenpou all over Heaven and Earth. Tenpou would be in for the fight of his life.

He made his way through the winding paths of Heaven to the infirmary and found Kenren seated next to Major Thies at the far end of the room. The other man didn’t seem to be seeing anything but the woman on the bed at that point in time and Konzen wondered if he should just leave and find out her condition from one of the healers. But Kenren lifted his head at that moment and motioned him over. Konzen went; carefully threading his way through the people sprawled out haphazardly around the room. He thought it was probably a good thing Shi was asleep otherwise she’d be here trying to help and getting in the way more than anything. It would be bad enough once she was fully mobile again. He knew Shi considered these people her responsibility, the fact that so many had been hurt and killed on her watch would depress then piss her off immensely. He’d have to talk to Tenpou and Kenren about getting the matter taken care of before Shi was back to full strength otherwise she’d go out hunting whatever had done this alone in order to spare anyone else being injured.

“How is she?”

Kenren shrugged. “No better, no worse. They say she’ll live but they’re worried because she’s been out so long,” he said, his face creasing in an uncharacteristic frown. “Shi?”

“Some fairly serious injuries, claw marks from hell across her back, side and chest, a couple of cracked ribs, dislocated shoulder that Tenpou helped snap back in. Lost a lot of blood but she’ll be okay in a few weeks the healer said. Tenpou’s with her now.”

“I have to talk to Tenpou soon anyway,” Kenren said, rolling his shoulders. “In his role as a field marshal not a friend.”

“Asking permission to go after whatever did this,” Konzen said.

Kenren nodded.

“I don’t think he’ll have a problem with it.”

“Figured he wouldn’t.”

“I have to go find Goku before he gets wind of this otherwise Shi will never get to rest,” Konzen said. “If you do go after those things, try not to fuck it up too badly.”

“Bite me, bitch.”

Konzen snorted. “Not on a bet.”

Shi groaned and put one hand to her aching head. It felt like someone had run over her with a chariot, horses and all. Then everything about the botched training came rushing back to her. She wanted to curl herself into a ball and cry but that would have hurt her ribs too much to do. Instead she brushed at the dampness leaking from under her eyelids before noticing weight at the edge of the bed and light, even breathing that wasn’t hers. Konzen probably, she thought before carefully turning over and getting the shock of her life.

She stared at the top of Tenpou’s head for a moment in confusion then remembered that he had been the one to bring her home. She would have blushed slightly at the rest of what she recalled had she been capable of it at this late stage in her life. She shook her head slightly, wondering why he was seated in a chair by her bed, head resting on his folded arms at the edge of the mattress, asleep. Not that the position was unusual, she’d seen him sleep sitting on the floor with his head propped up on several books before. She just couldn’t puzzle out why he was still there. She sighed, instantly regretted it, then turned back over carefully because if she kept staring at Tenpou she’d end up doing something mind blowingly stupid. Like putting her hands into all of that beautiful dark hair of his.
