Supernova

SUPERNOVA

Mid-August.

Aster and Lucinda walked into Chiba House with Kento and Jishin, to see everyone in the house clustered around the large flat-screen television in the main room.

Shortly after their births, Lucinda sent the twins, with a wet nurse, to Aster’s biological father in Nagasaki. They would be completely safe from the events in Tokyo, and Lucinda had left instructions with Hosyu that if something happened to her, Hosyu was to tell Ishihara Raiden the truth about her, the babies father, and the events leading to their deaths.

After the Hokkaido Exhibition, Lucinda had flown down to Nagasaki to pick up her babies. The monsters were gone, the Dark Millennium destroyed, and Pharoah Ninety once again banished.

The sisters put down their shopping bags and carried the children over to the center of the excitement.

“What’s going on?” Aster inquired.

“It’s a supernova!” Thomas said, his eyes wide with excitement. “They caught pictures of a supernova! You should see this! It’s beautiful!”

“I thought Astronomy wasn’t your major anymore, Thomas,” Aster said, smiling.

“It’s still beautiful!” Thomas raved. He turned back to the screen, where Ami was using a computer to show pictures of the supernova.

Aster walked around until she had a good view of the pictures. She expected to see an explosion of light. Instead, it looked almost dark, with a large amount of red.

Aster felt a chill that had nothing to do with ambient temperature.

“’Cinda,” she said. “I think we should call Hosyu. He needs to engage a nanny.”

“What is wrong, Aster?” Lucinda asked.

“I want to check some things online,” Aster said. “I want to know what the spectral signature of that star was before it went nova.”

Three and a half hours and an uncounted number of searches later, Aster walked out of the ‘office’ with a printout in her hand and a grim look on her face.

“We have a problem,” she said. “We need to have a meeting, and the twins need to go back south. There’s no question about it. If I could convince Setsuna, ChibiUsa would be on her way back to Crystal Tokyo within the hour.”

“What is it?” Mamoru asked. He was comfortably ensconced in his chair. Usagi had ordered it from the craftsman who had made Takagi’s chair. It was in black leather, with a domino mask sewn into the back.

“I found pictures from that area before the nova,” Aster said. She dropped the printouts in Thomas’ lap and crossed the room to climb into Takagi’s lap and tuck her head under his chin.

Thomas picked up the pages and read them. His face turned pale as he read the information, and he understood the source of Aster’s distress.

“These records are dated last year,” Thomas said. “According to this, all of the stars in that quadrant were G1 and G2 yellow main sequence stars. They shouldn’t have exploded for millions of years. The composition of yellow stars is mostly hydrogen and helium. Nothing in those stars should have turned red when the star exploded.”

“I don’t understand,” Robert said. “What’s the big deal?”

“An explosion is chaotic,” Usagi said quietly. Everyone turned to look at her, mystified.

“He survived what happened at Mugen School,” Usagi said. “What makes us think that Chaos itself would be destroyed by something that is the very essence of upheaval? He’s still out there, and he’s coming back.”

The next day, Lucinda followed Hosyu out to his helicopter. Two women were waiting at the helicopter, both of them hired to take care of Lucinda’s children.

She kissed Jishin and handed him to the first woman. Then, she kissed Kento and handed him to the other woman.

Lucinda turned to Hosyu and handed him a packet of papers.

“These give you custody until I come for them,” she told him. “Please keep them safe.”

“You know I will,” Hosyu said. “If it becomes necessary, I will take them down to Nagasaki.”

A week after the announcement of the supernova, Makoto and Robert called on the communicators. The forecast had mentioned electrical storms over Tokyo, and the two of them had rushed to Tokyo tower to experience the storm.

“This is Jupiter,” Makoto said. “We can see this gigantic figure coming down the street. It’s stomping cars, and people. It’s surrounded by this black field with red streaks in it.”

“We’ll be right there, Jupiter,” Aster replied. “Do what you can to slow it down, and we’ll be right there.”

Once again, they all transformed from where they were, and they converged on Tokyo Tower.

When they arrived, Sailor Sol briefly tried using her Dark Powers to lift herself off of the ground. They failed to do more than lift her onto her toes.

Now she understood. The influence of Chaos was disrupting the links between the Dark Kingdom and Earth. If she ever wanted to see Kunzite again, she needed to make certain that they defeated it, once and for all. The past six months had taught her, again, how vital he was to her life. More important, she knew how vital Zoisite was to Terra’s life.

“The Sailor Box is how we stopped him before!” Venus shouted to her. “It’s the only chance we have!”

“Got it!” all of the Senshi said in unison.

Sol looked up the bulk of Tokyo Tower and beckoned. In a few minutes, both Jupiters came bouncing down the superstructure of the Tower from where they had been slinging lightning to slow the attacker down.

“Surround him!” Sol ordered.

All of them spread out until they were in a position to surround the giant figure. They aligned themselves side by side with their lovers and started channeling the power that would contain their adversary and then banish him from their world again.

As they tightened the net, the figure paused in its advance, and then turned as if confused. The more they advanced, the more confused it seemed to get. It seemed to look at all of them, and then it whirled to face Sailor Sol in her position in the circle.

It appeared to smile at her, and her blood ran cold.

It raised its arms and pointed at two of the warriors randomly. There was a flash of light, and they disappeared.

Sailor Mars and Kishi Mercury. Sailor Neptune and Kishi Uranus. Sailor Terra and Sailor Uranus. Kishi Sol and Sailor Jupiter. Sailor Venus and Kishi Saturn. Sailor Mini-Moon and Kishi Jupiter. Sailor Mercury and Kishi Mars. Kishi Venus and Kishi Neptune. Prince Endymion and Sailor Saturn. Then it pointed at Kishi Moon and her.

There was a sensation of flying through the air, of seeing cityscapes and forests and grasslands and plains pass beneath her. She was blinded by brilliant flashes of light and by complete darkness. She was deafened by loud explosions and profound silence.

After that, she knew nothing but darkness.
