The Ctarl general paced back and forth on the bridge. the officers stayed quiet, not daring to say anything. they knew that their commander was annoyed at something, or someone.

"Where are they!?" the general asked and the tactical and C3 computers came to life.

"What the hell are those things?" Gene asked.

"Ah, those must be our mining equipment," Jim grinned.

"The Dig Dug is among the largest of those ships that are classified as Mining Barges and are called hulks by the military. Its base shape, as you can see, is rectangular, with a pair of horn-like protrusions on its bow. It has 4
drive ports on the stern, 2 large and 2 small, that propel the barge at a blazing 80 meters per second while at sub-light-speed. Its armor, a dark gun metal grey hull, is usually pock marked from years of small asteroid debris impact and pirates' weapons fire. However, it seems that these ships might have been serviced within the last six months," Gilliam Reported.

Jim continued, "Along the sides there are 3 clusters of 3 ports that will constantly
spout flame when it is mining. They are the furnaces that burn away the unwanted debris from the mining process. Located along the top and bottom center line of the ship are the 3 turrets that house the ships' strip miners. those massive devices fire an energy beam that is able to break its target up into small manageable chunks that are collected by a tractor beam like field that surrounds the beam. That will be used a lot to strip the planet we're orbiting."

Gilliam picked up the explanation, "the ore is then pulled into the ship and processed as it is dumped into its large cargo holes, which have 13,000 cubic meters of space

Jim continued from there, "as it sits on the edge of the asteroid field that it's mining, or in orbit in our case, any asteroid within 15 kilometers is fair game for it to plunder. Of course, this is a whole planet it will be mining and since it will kick up a lot of pollution when drilling, the planet won't be able to be lived on for some time, but no one is here so we don't have to worry about that.

Gilliam then took up the explanation, "Also housed on board each ship are 5 combat drones, remote controlled fighters, called hammerheads. They are fast, sturdy, and can take on most pirates that it usually encounters during the mining operations that this class of ship is sent on."

Jim then continued, "as it is mining, it will sit there with the Drones at the ready. The pirates would attack and the drones are deployed and the ships shields and armor will absorb the brunt of the attack while the drones chew up the attacking ships. While its drones can be attacked, they are small and very fast, making them hard to hit."

"Most impressive," Susuka remarked.

"Who built them in the first place?" Gene asked, having never seen those ships before.

"Space Forces can't afford the maintenance those ships require, but the Earth Federation, which has a far larger budget, employed those ships before the war," Gilliam answered.

"Ok, but how much of a pounding can they take against a Sith and Rorgan attack?" Gene asked.

"Don't know, but I have to guess we'll be here, lending protection until they finish mining," Jim said, but then the tactical computer went off again as another group of ships jumped back into normal space.

"Alright!" Jim celebrated as the C3 systems of the fleet linked up with the new ships.

"Drone carrier ships...I heard that they were in development, but I didn't think the empire would be able to finish them," Zyrashia said as the 'A' shaped, silver ships took their positions near the large barges and launched their drone support ships.

"Attention fleet, prepare to set course back for Heifong," the Ctarl general ordered via the trans-ether network.

"Can they fend off an attack?" Gene asked.

"The drone carriers can carry a good number of those drone ships. The carriers have the second generation of C3 and tactical computers to remotely control those drones," Jim reported.

"And the 200mm compressed coil railguns and the heavy missile batteries that they have in support of those drones gives enough fire power to protect those mining ships," Zyrashia added.

"Trans-ether jump in 5...4...3...2...1..." Melfina called out and the fleet jumped into trans-ether, leaving the mining ships to go to work on the planet.

"I am sorry father," Zyrashia's brother apologized, his head bowed in shame.

"because of you and your sister's failures, I must now support the general's attempt to challenge the Emperor. And, if that doesn't turn out the way it should, you will be cast out."

The younger Ctarl male shuddered in fear. Being a pampered first born son, he didn't know if he could survive outside of the family.

"Our mining of that planet has also found raw materials that can be used to build ships, along with the massive amounts of dragonite that's there," Valeria reported.

"How long will it take to get the first loads here?" the Ctarl general asked.

"The first loads of dragonite will be here in two days. It'll take another week to collect everything,' the blond Ctarl admiral responded.

"Feh, that'll give us time to make repairs.Make out patrol schedules for the wing commanders. We'll be here for awhile. Also start going over all the star charts we've got on hand. We'll need other sites to mine if this damn war drags on," the general said and the two admirals nodded.

The Ctarl Emperor frowned, "is this information correct?"

"Yes, the Silgrians, Nayans, and Corbonites are gathering a massive fleet at Blue Heaven. We believe that they are trying to send a message to our fleet to stay away from Blue Heaven," the officer said and the Emperor nodded his head in agreement of the assessment of the tactical situation at Blue Heaven.

"The Silgrians are the weakest of those three, but if they are all working in concert they could pose a threat. Get a message to my brother...tell him to watch for that fleet that is stationed at Blue Heaven. If necessary, take the outpost."

"Yes sire," the officer snapped off and quickly went to do so.

'Stay out of our way, or we will crush you,' he thought and sat back in his high leather chair at his desk. It appeared that the war was about to expand.

thanks goes to Wraith for the ship suggestion. Let me know what you thought.
