The Wedding
*** Chapter Four ***
The early hours of the morning saw Integra, in full formal regalia, walking towards the limousine, which waited by the main doors of Hellsing Manor. Walter was already there, holding the rear door for his bride-to-be. Integra took her seat in the car’s roomy interior, and he joined her, sitting opposite her. He had intended to drive the limousine that morning, but Integra would not hear of it. He was about to become Lord of the Hellsing family; he was not to act as a servant on this of all days.
As the chauffeur started the car and slowly proceeded along the long driveway, Walter poured a glass of wine from the bottle in the limousine’s fridge and proffered it to Integra. At first, she refused, but he insisted. “I sure as hell need a drink right now – I’m sure you do too.” She smiled at his evident nervousness and accepted the glass, taking a small sip. The warmth of the alcohol in her system calmed her a little.
The trip to Buckingham Palace was short, but silent. The two had little to say to one another, both absorbed in their own thoughts. The limousine pulled up at the gates, was admitted, and stopped by the entrance to the Palace. A formally attired guard opened the limousine door for them and Walter left the vehicle first, holding out his hand to assist Integra. The guard closed the door, and the chauffeur drove the limousine off to wait for their return.
Integra straightened her ceremonial sword, making sure her everything was in its place as she and Walter followed the guard, flanked by two more, into the Palace itself.
Walter patted his hair and tie, also checking that his outfit was in order. It had been many years since he’d seen Her Majesty personally. As they paused at the door to the Queen’s Presence Chamber, he took a calming breath. He noticed Integra did the same, as they were formally announced.
“Sir Integra Hellsing and Mr Walter Cum Ddolneazz.”
The Queen bid them enter, and they approached the throne, walking on the red carpet that ran from the floor to the foot of the dais on which the throne sat, beneath the Cloth of Estate. “Your Majesty,” intoned both Walter and Integra at once, bowing low.
The Queen smiled at them. “We welcome Our most faithful subjects on this most happy of occasions,” she said.
Integra lifted her bowed head, though still kept her eyes respectfully averted. “We are both greatly honoured, Your Majesty, that you deign to perform the ceremony yourself.”
“The continuation of the Hellsing family is very important to Us, as you surely know. We wished to give Our blessings to the new couple. Shall we begin?”
***
A scant hour later, the limousine delivered the newly married couple back to the Hellsing manor. The trip home had been even quieter than the trip to the Palace. ‘How kly kly things can change’ thought Integra. ‘That one final sentence, and I became a married woman.’ She still heard the Queen’s last blessing in her head. “May God bless this union. Amen.” Integra and Walter had echoed her and then, at the Queen’s insistence, they sealed the marriage with a kiss.
Integra had steeled her will, determined not to hesitate. She leaned in slightly towards Walter, closing her eyes as she felt his lips press chastely against hers. Then it was all over. They signed the marriage certificate and took their leave of the Queen. Walter escorted her back to the limousine, her arm in his. He helped her into the vehicle again, and resumed his seat across from her. Externally, everything was just the same as it had been before – only that brief ceremony and one piece of paper bea thr three signatures had changed things. But what a change!
Things were quiet on the Hellsing estate when they returned. The resident vampires were asleep, and the day staff was busily about their work and minding their own business. Integra was glad of her staff’s discretion. None would ask any questions; it was not their place, and they were content with that.
“I’m going to change, and then I’ll be in my office,” Integra said to Walter, to break the uneasy silence. “I’m sure the work has been piling up in my absence.”
“Undoubtedly,” agreed Walter. “Would you like lunch served as you work, or will you take it in the dining room?”
“In my office, please,” replied Integra. She started in the direction of her office, then paused. “If you wish to arrange my room for the two of us tonight, you may do so,” she said quietly, a slight blush highlighting her cheeks.
Walter inclined his head. “As you wish, Sir Integra.”
“And one more thing,” she continued. “Since we’re going to be... intimate... I think perhaps you should just call me ‘Integra’, at least in private.”
“It shall be so.”
Integra disappeared down the long hallway, coat fluttering behind her.
