The Calm
Chapter 4: Decisions of the Transformed

“Christ… I can’t believe it,” Spike sighed.

“Exactly, Spike. I mean, you said yourself that the docs declared her dead,” Jet said.

“They must have suspended her,” Faye said as she exhaled a line of white smoke.

“What do you think she went through? I mean, she died,” Jet sighed.

“Where is she now?” Faye asked.

“Vanished after a run in with a group of bounty hunters, they’re all dead, decapitated,” Spike said.

“Vicious?” Jet asked.

“No, Amaya uses a katana. She’s killed every one of her hits with it.”

“I can’t believe that Amaya, the Wolf of the Night Rain, is our friend,” Faye said.

“For all we know, she isn’t who she used to bymorymore,” Spike stated.

“Are we gonna search for her?” Jet asked.

Spike nodded. “Yeah, she’s our friend; we owe her too much to abandon her once we’ve found her.”

Amaya stood before three mirrors. She was dressed in her usual outfit of black cargo pants, combat boots and tight, black t-shirt, her coat with the gold, braided rope over it. She stared at the mirrors, none showed her reflection.

“What the fuck?” she mumbled.

It was then that the one to her right showed an image. It was her Rain persona, the bounty hunter. She was dressed in black jeans and a blue tank tith ith black sneakers. Her hair pulled back in a high ponytail. Her eyes sparkled with joy. ‘I was happy, then.’

Amaya turned away from it. The one to her left then showed another image. This time it was Eve, a red halter, tight leather pants, and knee high, stiletto heels adorning her figure. Her hair pulled into an intricate bun, hiding a knife to look like a decoration. She looked like a succubus. ‘Please tell me I didn’t dress like that!’ she scoffed mentally as she turned to the middle mirror.

The third and center mirror showed her young, teen form, a katana in one hand, a pistol in the other, her grey eyes empty and horrified. Her white t-shirt and blue jeans covered in blood. Amaya wanted to run. This was Marissa, after she joined the syndicate, after her first kill.

“We are one and yet we are all different,” Marissa said her voice soft and frightened.

“All aspects of the same woman,” Eve added, her voice filled with pride and arrogance.

“All part of you,” Rain said, her voice comforting and soothing.

“I know that, but what am I?” Amaya asked.

“You are the result. You are all of us combined into one being. The lost innocent,” Marissa started.

“The arrogant assassin,” Eve added.

“And the sacrificing mother,” Rain finished.

“Now what?” Amaya asked.

“You have to find your place, Amaya. You have to survive. Each of us died,” Rain started.

“Or faded away,” Eve finished.

“All of use fell because of strong faults. I was too pure,” Marissa said.

“I was too arrogant,” Eve stated.

“And I tried to forget who I was,” Rain said.

“And who am I?” Amaya asked.

“A beast,” Marissa said.

“A huntress of the night,” Eve added.

“An assassin and a human being,” Rain finished again.

“You are Amaya,” all three spoke in unison.

“So, I’m all of you?” Amaya asked.

“Yes, Amaya,” Marissa said.

“And now,” Eve said.

“You have to wake up,” Rain finished. “You have a world of work ahead of you.”

The images began to fade from the mirrors, leaving Amaya alone in thrk. rk. She fell to the ground, holding her knees. “I don’t want to be alone, though,” she whispered into the dark.

“Aurora won’t leave her,” Vicious said to his companion.

“She can feel her pain, she won’t abandon someone in pain,” Sith stated.

“What’s wrong?” he asked as he turned. His hands touching her arms, only to have her jerk away. “Sith?”

“You’ll go back to her,” Sith said.

“Perhaps,” he agreed. “But I will not leave you.”

“You can’t possess both of us, ous!ous!” Sith snapped.

“I never said that I did,” he said softly as he gathered the red haired woman into his arms.

Sith stiffened, but allowed him the embrace. “You’ve always loved her.”

“And I always will,” he said. “I love you too, Sith, but not like her. These past years… I mourned her, I let her go. I chose you, Sith.”

Sith stiffened, fighting a new swell of emotion that washed upon her. She couldn’t speak, so as to reveal her vulnerable state. She just relaxed into his embrace and wrapped her arms about his neck, pulling the silver haired man closer, afraid that if she let go, she’d wake up.

The skies seemed uncertain to him. Much like what he was feeling. He passed his hand over his bald head and sighed. She was alive, really alive. Was she the same person? Was she different? Why was she working as an assassin? All these questions and more flew through his head.

“How are you holding up?” a deep voice asked.

Jet turned to Spike and sighed. “I feel… numb.”

“I get the feeling,” Spike said as he leaned against the rail.

“She’s here, on Mars, and alive…. Why didn’t she try to contact us?” Jet asked.

“Probably thought she was protecting us. Funny, as I remember it, she was always trying to protect us,” Spike reminisced.

“She sacrificed herself. Her sanity, when she lived here. She sacrificed her happiness to protect her child, and her life to protect yours and Vicious. I don’t think I ever once saw her do anything for herself,” Jet said.

“She never thought she deserved it,” Spike sighed.

“What do you mean?” Jet asked.

“She never thought she deserved happiness. She believed that she wasn’t worth such a feeling.”

“I keep forgetting that you two were good friends,” Jet sighed.

“This is just from watching her, she didn’t tell me shit. When we first met, she used me, screwed me, and made me believe I was in love with her. She did that with a lot of men, a few women too. It was her way of getting close to her enemies before killing them. Thing is, she could never turn it off. Not until Mao died.”

“And now she’s just killing them in cold blood… wild, like-”

“An animal?” Spike finished. “How else can one deal with coming back from the dead?” he asked as he walked out of the navigation deck.

Jet turned back to the orange skies of Mars. ‘How indeed?’
