Chapter 3
Several weeks passed uneventfully.
Leon found out that a couple of his sources had been killed, and he suspected that they had gotten too close. Unfortunately, they hadn’t been killed where they’d been found, and they hadn’t been found anywhere near each other, so that didn’t help. Not that he expected Schwartz to be that careless, but still...
Word about him had gotten out in Chinatown, and they had a good number of Chinese customers coming in specifically to get a good look at him, but there was nothing he or Aya could say, because they did make purchases. And there was only so much time he could spend in the backroom. The whispers of ‘liye gui’ and other words for spirit, walking dead, etc, were getting old, quick. Anyone from outside Chinatown who had known him would have just noted his youthful appearance and dismissed it as coincidence. But these people were superstitious. They really believed it was him, that he’d come back from the dead. Part of him thought that maybe they were right. There was -something- wrong with him, that was for sure.
His teammates couldn’t help but notice how tense he was getting. He may have learned to control his temper and his tongue, but it wore at him. Finally, he’d had enough one afternoon. “Dammit, people!! I’m not who you think I am, and don’t think I can’t understand what you’re saying about me!!”, he bellowed, and stormed upstairs.
Youji, who was just getting up, watched Leon go into his rooms and slam the door behind him. He opened the unlocked door and was witness to the tall blonde putting his fist through the wall, followed by a mixture of curses in several different languages. “You alright, Leon?” he asked.
“I can’t handle this,” Leon said, “I speak enough Chinese to know what they’re saying, and I can’t control my temper anymore. I can’t go back out there.”
“Saa, don’t let it bother you so much.”
“You don’t understand, Youji. The body they pulled from the wreckage and identified as me, looked like me. Fingerprints and everything.” He laughed bitterly. “I had no idea how well known I was until I saw how many people attended the funeral. They SAW my dead body, cuz it was an open casket funeral. And now they find me here. They believe it was my body that got buried, and I’ve come back from the dead. Dammit, I don’t like people looking at me like I’m some kind of zombie and making signs to ward off evil. It’s insulting!”
“Hey, easy there. I’ll take over the rest of your shift for you,” Youji said quietly. “Just try to calm down, okay?” He’d heard Leon all the way from his bedroom on the third floor, and Aya wouldn’t be any good at damage control in the store. He’d better get down there.
“Yeah, thanks.” Temper somewhat spent, he leaned his head against the wall. “Fuck. Me.” He muttered under his breath after the other blonde left. Why wouldn’t they just leave him alone? He didn’t worry about them blowing his cover- Chinatown was notorious for its jealously guarded secrets, but…
…it could always provide answers to questions that he didn’t want to ask.
+++++++++++++++++
Youji came back to his room later to see how he was doing.
“Hey, Leon, you in here?” he asked as he opened the door.
“Yeah, come on in.”
The honey blond found Leon sitting at his desk, going over some reports from his contacts.
“Feeling better?”
“Yeah,” Leon sighed.
“So are you going to tell me or not?”
Leon groaned. “You never do give up, do you? You’re not going to leave me alone until I tell you everything about the night I supposedly died.”
Youji nodded emphatically. “You bet. You know I’m an incurable snoop.” Leon waved his hand with a sigh of resignation, signaling him to go ahead. “I found out they were doing genetics research at that laboratory…”
“That’s right,” Leon affirmed.
“I was wondering if they had some links to Estet..there’s a familiar pattern, and the head doctor did turn up missing...I don’t feel comfortable with some mad geneticist still running around.”
“He’s dead, but it wouldn’t have surprised me at all if he had been working for Estet. After all, they were seeking the destruction of humanity.”
“Are you sure he’s dead?”
“I shot him between the eyes. He’s dead, Youji.”
“Oh. But they didn’t find a body.”
“That I don’t have an explanation for. I think my friend D was killed in the explosion trying to protect me from it, too. That’s what I remember anyway...my memory’s a bit fuzzy on that. But they didn’t find his body, either.”
“What was your friend doing there? He was just a pet shop owner, right?”
Leon shook his head. “The doctor Agent Howell was investigating was D’s father. For some reason D took off and disappeared and Howell went after him. I was upset because I thought he had betrayed me. Then what I thought was D came and took me to the laboratory. To make a long story short,” (no way was he going to share that D’s father had tried to seduce him) “I found out that it was D’s father, not D himself, and the crazy son of a bitch tried to kill me. Set a bunch of his ‘creations’ on me, so I got pretty tore up. D showed up later with Agent Howell.”
“Sou da yo...So why’d you want to disappear, then? Why didn’t you just contact your department and let them know you were still alive?”
Leon stiffened. “I don’t wanna talk about it.” He went his mini-fridge and pulled out a beer. “Want some?” he offered. Youji accepted it, but gave Leon an odd look. Obviously his teammate didn't want to discuss where the doppelganger body came from. Was it so close genetically that he was afraid they wouldn't be able to tell Leon wasn't the fake, or was Leon in fact the double and didn't want to admit it? His instincts told him he was talking to the real deal...but maybe Leon himself wasn't sure.
In any case, it was time to change the subject. “What about your friend’s father? I know you’re not stupid, so how could you mistake him for your friend?” Youji pressed.
“They looked identical.”
“But the age difference...” Youji argued.
Leon got up. “I’m going out,” he announced, putting his beer down on the desk.
“Don’t be like that, Leo-kun…” Youji started, but the other blond was already out the door. “Zou...” He’d pushed too hard. Again.
He tried to follow, but his teammate seemed to have vanished into thin air. He went downstairs into the living room. “Did anyone see Leon come through here?” he asked. Ken and Aya shook their heads.
He ran a hand through his hair in exasperation. Leon was known for being impossible to track when he didn’t want to be found. It was that ability that made him one of the few survivors of the chaos that followed the original Persia’s death and the destruction of Estet. Like Weiss, he had survived by simply vanishing for several years.
Youji admitted defeat and went back upstairs to his room. Somehow he didn’t feel like going out. Even when Leon gave answers, they only seemed to raise more questions. He sat down on his bed and drank his beer as he tried to put the pieces together and make sense out of his enigmatic teammate.
In Leon’s study, You Mangy Bastard knocked over the mostly full beer can and eagerly lapped up its contents.
***
When Leon finally decided to come home it was somewhere around 2am, and he was a lot drunker than he had been in a long time. For some reason that he forgot by the time he got there, he went to Youji’s door and knocked. There was the sound of someone stumbling toward the door and it opened to reveal an equally trashed Youji.
“No date tonight, Yo-tan?” Leon asked with a lop-sided grin.
“S’late Leo-kun.”
The tall blonde chuckled. With higher brain functions effectively shut down, other parts of his body were taking control. He pulled Youji into his arms and kissed him.
It was a testament to the playboy’s advanced state of inebriation that he actually accepted, even deepening the kiss himself.
“Mmm...” Youji was a top-notch kisser, Leon thought. He knew -exactly- what to do with his tongue.
Just as Leon was getting ready to take his teammate to the bed and ravish him, Youji remembered he was straight. “KISAMA!!” He shoved the American out of his room and slammed the door. Leon laughed as he heard the click of the lock.
Youji’s muffled voice came through the door. “You, you...blatant bisexual!!! Don’t ever do that again!”
“G’nite Yo-tan.” The grin never left Leon’s face. That was fun. He turned around. Aya was standing outside his door. “Sorry about that, man. Didn’t mean to wake you up,” he said. The redhead GLARED at him and went back inside, slamming the door behind him.
Leon shrugged and went to bed. That took some doing. His 30 lb cat was somehow taking up more space than seemed physically possible and was quite comfortable right where he was. He snarled and went to find a water bucket...
+++++++++++++++++++++
Another trait of Leon’s that baffled Youji to no end was his ability to go out and party all night, only to show up to work in the morning all bright eyed and bushy-tailed. For the playboy it seemed to get harder to get up in the morning every year, but the former cop seemed unfazed by the passing of time. It amazed Aya, too, not that he would show it. As late as he stayed out the night before, and as drunk as he was, the swordsman was sure that for once Leon would come in with a hangover.
Not so. The tall blond came in a few minutes early and gave him a friendly greeting. Denied even the satisfaction of seeing his teammate suffering for his excess the night before, he returned nothing but a death glare.
Needless to say, the customary silence between them that morning was deafening. Even the customers were aware something was wrong, and made their purchases quickly so they wouldn’t have to stay longer than necessary. It felt like a powder keg was going to go off at any second.
Leon was severely annoyed. Ran really needed to learn to express himself in ways others could understand. -He’s angry about last night...but why is he angry? He always gets up when I come in, if he wasn’t waiting up already. Wait...is he jealous? Is he mad because I went to Youji’s door, and not his?- Now there was a concept.
He decided to wait until after the shift to try to pry it out of the other man. No sense in driving Aya to try to kill him in the store.
Ken had already left with some deliveries when Yohji came down for his shift, ten minutes late. He looked like what anyone who wasn’t Leon would after a night of hard drinking.
Leon figured he could have some fun, and provoke a response from the stoic redhead at the same time. “Morning, sweetie,” he said, and winked.
Youji blanched. So he did remember. “You...” he started, then looked at Aya.
“I saw.” He said simply.
To both Leon’s and Aya’s suprise, the playboy flushed, totally embarassed. Youji was notoriously shameless- they didn't think anything could bring color to his cheeks. Seems they were wrong. Leon decided to push his luck and got into Youji’s personal space to whisper something in his ear. The American was a consummate flirt and tease, as Kudou had learned when they started clubbing together, even if he never followed through. And he wasn’t picky about gender, either. Normally Youji didn’t care, but normally he wasn’t on the receiving end of Leon’s attentions, either.
Aya couldn’t hear what Leon said, but Youji turned an even brighter red and chased Leon out of the room, cursing him the whole way. Kudou Youji did not like being seduced by another man, not even in jest.
The redhead found Leon in his room later, once again sitting at his desk, trying to figure out where they should start looking for Schwartz. He just stood there, watching the ex-cop at work.
Leon eventually got annoyed. “If you have something to say, Ran, spit it out. I’m not playing twenty questions with you.”
For a moment it seemed the slender figure in black was going to turn and leave as he usually did when Leon tried to get him to talk. But he didn’t. Instead he shut the door behind him. With a few swift steps he closed the distance between them, pouncing into the American’s lap, kissing him fiercely. Startled, Leon knocked half the papers from his desk onto the floor. He hadn't really expected the redhead to be interested in him, much less make such an aggressive move.
He knew Ran was strong, but damn! The smaller man held him by the sides of his face and half-kissed, half-bit his lips savagely. He didn’t waste any time, and opened his mouth to deepen the kiss. Their tongues met and dueled in a struggle for control.
With one hand Leon held Ran by the back of his head, fingers entangled in the silky crimson strands. The other found its way under his black t-shirt and pulled him close. Leon growled in pleasure when their hips ground together as the gorgeous man writhed against him.
Ran was making aggressive grunts of pleasure as well. He pulled the blonde’s hair out of its binding, then reached lower to pull Leon’s t-shirt out of his jeans and lifted it up. The larger man pulled away for a second so his teammate could pull it all the way off, then returned the favor. Both shirtless, they came back together with ferocity, Leon sucking on the smaller man’s neck, then biting hard, tearing the pale skin.
The younger man angrily cried out in pain and yanked them both down to the floor, where they continued their violent struggle for dominance.
Aya had no idea what drove him. With their bodies pressed tightly together, body heat rapidly rising, there was no room for rational thought, though his reason must have already left him by the time he found himself at Leon's door. Now his teammate's warm scent overwhelmed him, a musky mixture of male hormones with a sweet undertone, and all he knew was that he wanted Leon, wanted him in the worst way.
Leon grabbed him roughly and with an unnatural burst of strength, pinned him down to the floorboards, and kissed him deeply. His lips found their way down the smooth, pale skin of Aya's neck, then nibbled and teased soft, pink nipples that quickly reddened under the harsh treatment.
Aya gasped and arched his back under the rough, but intensely pleasurable contact. Leon was nowhere near being done with him. Lips, tongue, and teeth took their turns exploring the redhead's pale flesh, ignoring the younger man's curses and demands that he get on with it already.
Leon finally made it to his teammate's hard, swollen erection and lapped at it enthusiastically. With an effort he held Aya's hips to the floor as his new lover bucked under him and clenched the American's long blond hair in his fists.
Mercifully, the former cop took Aya in all the way, alternating between sucking him fully, then pulling back to just the tip, using his tongue to tease and caress the whole time. The redhead didn't last long at all. "A-a-AHHH! Damn you, Leon!" he managed to gasp out.
Leon chuckled and kissed him warmly. "You're welcome," he muttered into silky maroon strands.
Aya inhaled the large blond's scent deeply. The sweet undertone was stronger now. Far from satisfied, he felt fevered, almost intoxicated. He wanted every part of Leon, to feel, to taste all that he could. He wrapped himself around his lover's large frame and started to do just that, repeating what Leon had done to him, but with a frenzy. Where the blond had been slow and teasing, Aya was like a ravenous wolf, devouring all he could. He quickly brought Leon to release and collapsed on top of him.
Their sweat-slick bodies intimately entwined, they tasted each other as they kissed. It wasn't long before they were hard and eager again. Leon rolled over on top and settled himself between Aya's slender thighs. "Hey," he whispered huskily, "You okay with this?"
The redhead nodded. His body was on fire, his aching desire clouded all thoughts from his mind. He felt his legs lifted over his teammate's shoulders, then grunted with the discomfort of Leon entering his body, but soon cried out in ecstasy when the blond found the sweet spot deep inside him.
Leon moaned deeply from the intensity of being enveloped by his lover's tight heat. It had been so long since he had been with anyone, and he wondered now how he had gone without. He drove Aya into the floor as hard as he could. "Oh Ran," he breathed, "Feels so good...Shiiiitttt..."
Aya was so overwhelmed by the pleasure that he welcomed the roughness. "Yes...harder..." he whispered, then as he felt himself closer he cried out. "HARDER!" he demanded and wrapped himself around his lover, digging his short nails into Leon's back. The blond was only too happy to comply and thrust sharply into the smaller man until he came with an inarticulate cry and spilled himself between their overheated bodies. Leon was undone when Aya's inner muscles clamped around him and spots floated over his vision, his orgasm was so intense. Suddenly he felt incredibly drained and let himself fall backward onto the floor, Aya lying on top of him.
For several minutes neither of them moved as they tried to catch their breath.
Finally, reluctantly, they disengaged, and Ran sat up unsteadily, still dazed. Leon couldn’t help but think how incredible the pale redhead looked, his face flushed, sweat-soaked hair plastered to his face. Ran looked down at him and thought much the same. The amethyst stud in his left ear glittered in the afternoon sun, matching the shade of his eyes. Amethyst and sapphire studied each other.
They were both scratched and bruised from the rough foreplay. Blood still oozed from the wound on Aya’s neck and he winced as Leon licked at it, but the nail marks on the blonds’s back and hips were already closing and would be gone within the hour.
“Shower?” Leon suggested and Ran nodded his agreement. Leon frowned as they headed for the bathroom. The large blond had his misgivings about sustaining a long-term relationship with Ran. For one thing, they were both dominant males, which was going to cause serious problems.
“It’s not going to work,” Ran said from under the hot water once they had gotten into the shower. He had been thinking the same thing. The Japanese redhead frowned as he noticed how quickly the wounds he had inflicted were fading, but said nothing. -Let the ghost keep his secrets- he thought. Nevertheless, even he was confused by what he had just done.
“Probably not.” Leon agreed.
But for now, there was only the present...
