Memories consume
Like opening the wound
I\'m picking me apart again
You all assume
I\'m safe here in my room
Unless I try to start again

\"Aqua Tornado!\"

A faint blue waterspout erupted from Umi\'s hand and was gone again in only several seconds. Though her previous time in Cephiro had been false, she was nonetheless connected with the powers of water. However, since she hadn\'t actually learned any spells, she now had to go through the process again - only this time it was real. Zagato had hired a cute little red imp called Kai to help her train.

\"Aye,\" Kai said, clicking his forked tongue, \"I\'m afraid you\'ll never get along like that. You have to start out with something easier. A cyclone\'s no piece of pie...or is something just distracting you?\"

\"Distracting me...?\" Umi repeated blandly. \"Such as what?\"

\"I dunno. Zagato, perhaps?\"

\"Right...and he would be distracting me in what way?\"

Her dislike of the suddenly introduced topic of conversation had made Umi\'s cheeks turn bright red. Noticing them right off the bat, Kai quipped, \"Oo-ooh. Someone\'s got a crush.\"

\"No! I -\" Umi took several deep breaths to calm herself down before continuing. \"No, I don\'t. And even if I did, our age difference would get in the way.\"

\"Nah...he can\'t be much more than eight or so years older than you, maybe nine. I wouldn\'t consider that a very large number.\"

\"Yeah,\" Umi retorted, \"Because imps live to be one thousand years old and the seniors screw the children for pleasure. Your word doesn\'t go too far. And besides, for the last time, I do not have a crush on him!\"

\"And how would you know that at the moment? Things change. Everything does, as a matter of fact. That\'s the cycle of life and love - nothing stays the same forever, and everything changes.\" Kai said wisely.

\"You wouldn\'t understand,\" Umi sighed, and went back to practicing her magic.

Later that evening, Zagato called Umi into his study with urgent news: he had discovered some new, important information about the evil forces slowly eating away at the very existance of Cephiro. According to what he told Umi, he had sent Kai out to gather information from the villagers.

\"They call themselves FireClan,\" he explained, \"But they also harness the balance of life. They were born like this, but have started to use their powers in the wrong way. I believe that they plan to push Cephiro to the brink of destruction and then rebuild it - but in a new way. As their own world.\"

\"But that would be problematic for them,\" Umi said, \"To rebuild an entire nation, whereas they could just try to take it over without virtually destroying it first.\"

\"No,\" Zagato said, shaking his head, \"Cephiro is still too strong at the moment, and in its best state they certainly wouldn\'t be able to overtake it. Keep up with your training, and by the time FireClan decides to make their move, you\'ll be ready to fight them in the final battle that will ultimately decide the fate of all Cephirans. But you must be prepared at any given moment, because we still can\'t be certain when they will come.\"

Umi bit her lip so hard that she tasted a bit of blood. \"To tell you the complete and utter truth, I\'m afraid,\" she said, \"Even when I...dreamt...I was a Magic Knight, I\'ve never faced anything like this. And I\'ve never had to wait around, knowing what\'s ahead and dreading it. It\'s a strange...feeling.\"

\"I\'m sure you\'ll do fine when the time comes,\" Zagato said quietly. His eyes were much softer, more caring looking, and his personality as a whole was much more likable than how he had been in Umi\'s vision of being a Magic Knight. There was just something...Umi shuddered and kept herself from finishing the thought. But even late that night, as she tried to fall asleep, she still couldn\'t forget what Kai had said.
